SALE OF NEWSPAPERS Word,
was received in the city yesterday
from Ell S. Perkins, saying that he
had just sold his two newspapers, the
Mart'nez News-Herald and tho Wick
enburg Miner. The name of the pur
chaser was not given. Mr. Perkins ad
ded that he thought he would remain
out of the newspaper business for
some time.
THE MORMON GIRL Kd Howard
came in from Cave Creek yesterday
with W. T. V. Donald for a day or so
of metropolitan life. Mr. Howard has
just completed a contract he took to
sink 100 feet on the Mormon Girl
mine, which is now down 369 feet in
the shaft, or 234 feet below the point
where the tunnel intersects the shaft.
Thre is a good force of men working
and everything is running along
smoothly.

day, .said that the flow at Ritehin's
gauging station that day measured 37,
400 inches, about twice what it was
a few days before and indicating
storms above. But the report yester
day was that the water had fallen 7o0o
inches in the preceding twenty-four
hours. Word came Tuesday night also

that trains could not run. From this
it was presumed that a big flood was
coming down the liver, but nothing
was heard of U yesterday.
AN INSURANCE MERGER The
proper papery were filed yesterday in
the office of the territorial secretary,
authorizing the Firemen's Fund Insur
ance Corporation t. do business in the
territory of Arizona. Tins i:-i a new
insurance company formed by the
merging of the interests of the o',d
Firemen's Fund, tlie Home F'ire and
Marino and tiic Pacific Underwriters'
Association, all San Francisco compa
nies. They were all of them hit pretty
hard by the San Francisco fire, but
have weathered the storm and by con
solidating their interests start business
again in pretty good condition. The
capital stock of the new company is
$25O.OJ)0. and its gross assets $2,731,730.
DRILL CAMP ABANDONED The
diamond drill crew that has been en
gaged .in prospecting the bottom of
Salt river at Graaite revf fr the last
six months, finished its work on Mon
day and 0:1 Tuesday broke camp and
came to Phoenix. Engineer Parish
says that seventy-two holes were bor
ed in the bed of the river in that im
mediate vic'niiy and the bed rook was
pretty thoroughly located. He said
jokingly that they did not dare bore
any more holes there for fear they
would puncture the bottom so thor
oughly the water would all leak Into
the center of the earth, be generated
into steam and cause a volcanic erup
tion. o

great demand for Navajo bracelets
which has been created by Balke's Big
Curio store, mainly by proving that the
bracelets were actually made by the
Indians, of pure silver, and that they
were not made in Mexico of German
silver, in imitation of the work of the
Indians, which has become so popular
throughout the country.
Previous to the exposure by the Big
Curio store of the fraud, many of these
imitation bracelets had been sold, and
many of the purchasers have discarded
them. No lady, if she know3 it, will
be caught wearing a cheap, bracelet of
German silver whose ornamental en
gracing tias oeen stamped on with a
steel die.
Several persons have called at the
Big Curio store to satisfy themselves
whether they were wearing the false
or the true, and all who are still In
doubt are invited to come and be sat
isfied. Now that Hhort-sleeved dresses
are so much worn, these fake bracelets
if they happen to be fake, loom up par-
ticnlaily conspicuously and excite the
mirth of th initiated.
It is well enough to look Into this lit
tle matter of bracelets. It will give a
line on the character of the seller of
imitations, for one who will palm off
the imitation Mexican work for the
genuine Indian work will resort to oth
er fraud which will entail a much more

WATER LITIGATION
The Great BlanKet Suit Reached the
Supreme Court Yesterday.
The case of the Smithville ' Canal
company against the Oregon Canal
company and others, from Graham
county reached the supreme court yes
terday on an appeal taken by the Mon
tezuma Canal company, one of the de
fendants. Thid suit is in many respects like
that of Hurley against Abbott and
others in this county. It embraces
practically all of the irrigation com
panies and water users of the upper
Gila valley. There are some twenty
three companies interested in it.
The object of the appeal is not to
secure a new trial or to supersede the
judgment of the lower court, but to
secure certain modifications of it on
the ground that a very important fact
affecting the appellant was overlooked
in the decree.
The appellant and the San Jose Ca
nal company are two of the oldest ir
rigating canals in that part of the
country. Some years ago their inter
ests were found to be In conflict and
injunction proceedings were instituted
by the Montezuma against the San
Jose. The result of the proceedings
was an order giving the Montezuma a
preferential right in a thousand inches
of water.
The decree in the last suit fixes the
status of all the parties involved, es
tablishes their priorities and provides
for the appointment of a water com
missioner at a salary of $150 a month
to carry out the order but no account
was taken of the right which the Mon
tezuma company had secured In the
former injunction proceedings.
