(Special Cor respondence of The Republican) Distance does not "lend enchantment" to the great mining district of Kelvin. To realize the chains of vast and na tive possibilities ready for develop uient, one has to be on the ground, to see with his own eyes and operate with his own brains, then enthusiasm In evitably results, and those with money or in touch with money get busy with organization of companies that buy or bond. One sees many "pick and leg gin" men, engineers and experts in this district getting data and reports on the various claims. The impetus to start It ! V5 likX , If COOL OFF FOR A FEW DAYS. It has been known that this was a very rich district, a copper and gold I country with plenty of water and fuel I and now that the railroad passes i through the midst of it, investors are i coming in its infancy, but it is a strong start. In fact, there are but few developed mines that are produc I ing, but the time is now at hand when I the start is made on many prospects j that will be producers and big mines. The people of Kelvin are indeed an op timistic people and they have just cause for their hopes are on rocks, mountains of rocks, exceedingly rich in copper, gold, silver, lead and iron. A property that may be called a mine is the old Ray property, about which there has been much said and written. This is now in the control of the Anglo-American Copper company, Limited, which is just beginning to develop that famous property. A drill crew has been started with a core drill to thoroughly prospect the hold ings. W. Y. Westervelt is the con- Round Trip 99 R. N. MOUTIER, C. P. & T. A. Tm rf suiting engineer, who has outlined a program for thorough prospecting with the drill. He has had much experience with the drill and the method is quick and efficient. As yet the drill work has not progressed far enough to state results. The work of this drill will show what class of mills and machin ery can be placed to advantage. The local manager is C. M. Gordon. A visit to the mine is sufficient to show its immensity. The entire district of mountains is mineralized and copper stained. Rather than In ledges, the ore is in bodies. The Ray mines have big leads and deposits that with depth show rich results. There are more copper indications in sight than proba bly in any other district in the United States. Work is progressing encouragingly on the Bryan group which is right in Kelvin on the railroad and the Gila! river.- It was formerly the property of J. K. MrCarty and Clara Kinney. The present owners are Boston and Chica- ! go people, headed by . A. Creighlon of Boston, who is heavily interested in' the Boston Consolidated of Utah and C. H. Seanians of Chicago, who is op-' erating the zinc mines at Magdalena, ' Mexico. There are twenty men at work and the force will .be increast-d as fast as there is room made by the development. The ore consists princi- ' pally of chalcopyrite and bornite. The average width of the ledge is five feet. The deepest working is 130 feet. A three foot streak of ore has been en- j countered that runs 30 per cent cop per. Superintendent J. C. Erman ! states that enough ore Is taken out j during the present development work! 10 more man pay present expenses. The ore is shipped to the Humboldt smelter and so far has made $25 per ton, after pajing the expense of ship ping and treatment. Mr. Erman is an able, welil known engineer and a prac-j tical man. He it was that made the I great success of the Live Oak mine j at Globe. The bornite ore strike so rnarve- ' lously rich was made at a depth of only eighty feet. The company is go- t ing down every day. ! A good property that has a favorable' report is the Lime Hill group, owned by H. H. Borton, located in the Urip-; ping Springs range and six miles northeast of Kelvin. The group con-: fists of ten claims on which there are five shafts and two tunnels aggregat- j ing 5i'm feet of woi k. The deepest; shaft is 100 feet at the bottom of which are cross cuts showing size and richness. The foot wall is granite, thej hanging wall lime and ore porphyry.lt. Is gold, copper and silver, assays j show 7 per cent copper, $8 to $10 gold, and 50 to Co ounces silver. It is near the well known Haley lead mines. The best part of Mr. Borton's property j is the great body of ore even though i it is not of high grade and it doubtless1 will be a big producer some day. j A deal just being consummated is , a bond on the property of E. O. De- J vine and John B. Sebrean to the Vic- . tor Copper Mining company of which I. N'. Kerris is president and E. J. ' Turner, secretary and treasurer, both of San Diego. The deeds we re placed in escrow subject to conditions of bond in the Phoenix National bank last week by Mr. Devine. Mr. Turner will be here in a few days and by the first i of August a force of men will be at I work developing the group which Is j four and a half miles southwest of Kelvin. Between 300 and 400 feet of work has been done and assays show rich ore, porphyry, lime and quartz formation. Another mine that is shipping ore to the Humboldt smelter to the extept that the mine is entirely self paying In its development state Is that , Indian Motocycles $230 Delivered REDEVILL BROS., 224 W. The program Is to sink T,00 feet and put up a big steam hoise. The properly is located near the Zellewager and the Gila Mon st'or. A promising group is the Indepen dence, owned by Frank Woods. Peter Winkleman and O. K. Sowers. It con sists of ten claims located eight miles from Kelvin. It is a copper proposi tion with immense iron croppings on the surface. There is a 60-foot shaft on an Immense ledge assaying 10 tot 0 per cent copper. It is bonded by j tlie Arizona Pacific Copper company, headed by (J. . Sharpe. Tne same people have a bond on seven claims adjoining the Independence and owned by John Hatton and V. Wadlington John Ellis and H. Collins of Tucsoji. have been in Kelvin the past few days. They are practical mining men who are developing the Zellewager mine on which they have a bond of $10,000. They are backed by Michigan people. This mine constitutes what is considered one of this district's best possibilities. It is located four miles down the river admirably located as to water and railroad. The new men will devel op the property as fast as possible. The property is being gone over by an en gineer and surveyor to ascertain the E. S. WAKELIN GROCER CO.... This Space Belongs to the E. "Another deal George Sarrick has on is for a group of twelve claims he owns near the Zellewager. These claims promise rich possibilities. They carry an abundance of red and black oxide of copper in high grade veins. Tom Smith and L. E. Hewins of Phoe nix have secured an option of fifte'.i days on this group to look them over with a view to secur'ng a bond on I them. Mr. Sariick is an old time j miner, will known in this district. Mr. Sarrick has two claims that Join the Zellewager which will probably be bonded by the. men working the Zel lewager mine. There are twelve men at work on the Copper Peak mines, seven miles west of Kelvin, near the railroad. This is the property sold by A. G. Wilson and A. C. Sheldon to the National Exploration company. The group con sists of twelve claims and the devel opments now being made are highly favorable. Joining the Zellewager mines is a group owned by the Gila Monster Con solidated Gold and Copper companv. I consisting of Messrs. Emmett, Rut ! ledge. Crawford and Grindell. This I has been flatteringly reported on by engineer j. i fcirnian. This property lias 1000 feet of development work done on it. The greatest depth yet at tained is 70 feet. It has a quartz vein between porphyry and granite. Chas. H. Cutting, formerly superin tendent of the Troy- Manhattan com pany is becoming interested In several properties in this district. He has se cured bonds on valuable property and is now in Massachusetts raising money. CHAS. A.
