Hon. Benjamin M. Read, a prominent
attorney of New Mexico and a former J
speaker of the legislature of that tor- j
ritory, recently wrote an able letter
against jointure putting forth the
claims of New Mexico to admission as
a single state, on strong historical
grounds. It is set forth that New
Mexico was not acquired by war, but
became a part of the United States
before the treaty of Guadalupe Hidal
go, and that wh'le the Mexican war
was stHl.in progress, New Mexico nev
er committed an act of hostility
against the American government, but
on the contrary warmly welcomed the
American forces under General Kear
ney and received a pledge from him
as follows "We come as friends to
make you a part of the republic of the
United States. In our government all
men are equal." Within four years
New Mexico asked the government to
redeem that pledge and has continual
ly asked since, meeting with denial,
and at times, insult from within the
halls of congress. Through it all there
has never been a faltering of New
Mexican loyalty.
Mr. Read says he believes that two
thirds of the voters of New Mexico are
against jointure. He hawever, fell into
an error regarding the sentiment of
Arizonians, who, he says, "repudiate
ur society and we don't want their
company."
The Republican ha3 taken pains
from time to time to reflect what it
believes to be the Arizonian sentiment
with respect to the people of New
Mexico. It has admitted the good cit
izenship and loyalty of the New Mex
ican people who are in no sense an in
ferior race, though largely of a differ
ent race. That difference has been
urged as one of the m'nor reasons why
there should be no jointure and as one
of the minor reasons also why New
Mexico should be a separate state.
We have urged too, that on account
of what we believe to be more favor
able conditions in this territory, iro
proposed partnership would be an un
equal one. Our main objection, though,
is that the partnership, even if we
were of the same "race and if the con
ditions of both territories were equal
ly good, the partnership would be bad
for both of us.
More than all, this great area is en
titled to be two sovereign st lies In
stead of one, as we would always be
If jo'nture should prevail. We trust
that our friends in New Mexico will
glow in their opposition to joint state
hood, but that they will not be mov
ed by a spirit or hostility toward Ari
zoniana. THE JAPANESE MONOPOLY.
The sympathy of the commercial in
terests of this country was wholly with
Japan In the late war in the far east.
American merchants and manufactur
ers feared the greediness of the bear in
Manchuria. They were not reassured
when they were given the "open ports"
of Mukden and Autung, one of them
like Sancho I'anza's island, many
miles from sea.
They believed that if Russia were
driven out of Manchuria, that country,
which was the most promising of all
developing markets, would be thrown
open to the world. It is now becoming
painfully evident that the Japanese
commercial domination of Manchuria
will be far mor exclusive of Ameri
can commerce than Russian control
could have been.
A couple of weeks ago a Japanese
official, replying to an American com
plaint that American trade in Man
churia was being discriminated against
by the Japanese government, denied it,
saying that the Japanese merchants
needed n' protection. Thpy were able,
by their favorable sitnation with re
spect to Asia, to more than hold their
own. There was an implication m the
denial, however, that if they required.
protection It would be afforded them.
Now it is authoritatively stated that
the Japanese government i about to
nationalize the commerce and Indus
tries of Manchuria by forming a cor
roratlon with Japanese merchant
miners, manufacturers and railway
builders. This will mean the practical
exclusion of foreign trade.
It is an experiment never before at
tempted by any nation on so large a
scale. It is doubtful if such a move-
ment could succeed if attempted by;
any other nation, but it would be a j
wonder if it should fail In the hands j
of Japan. j
The resources of Manchuria are so ;
extensive and varied that once this
great enterprise is under way. there j
will be no room for the goods of other j
countries. Manchuria will be convert- j
ed into a world of trade and manufac- i
turing w ithin itself. Our dreams of ,
oriental commercial conauest will j
gradually become much less vivid than,
they were when Russia lost its grasp j
on Manchuria. ;
OF INTEREST TO FRATERNITIES.
The organization of the new state of
Oklahoma possesses a new Interest for
the secret societies. A writer in the
American Tyler calls attention to tho
anomalous condition brought by the
Jointure of the two territories, as fol
lows: "The organization of Oklahoma pre
sents some interesting problems to the
large fraternal bodies now having
fciand lod.ies in the two territories
from which the new state is to b-
formed. Some may consolidate and
some may not and the anomalous con
dition might present itself of two
grand bodies in the same common
wealth. Thia is particularly true of the
grand lodge of Masons, which bavins
no superior authority, might each con
tinue to exist. Rut the question might
arise whether each was entitled to ex
ercise concurrent jurisdict'on In the
entire state or only over its own ter
ritory. Or, would the Indian Territory
yield in all cases because the name of
its grand lodge will have become obso
lete? And think of all the 'good men
and true' who will find themselves out
of highly honorable fraternal position-
in the new united bodies. How many
r.mbitious members now in line ii thf
grand bodies wi!l never reach the head
of the grand bodies if they fuse?
"The problem is a new one in Am
erican fraternities, for while many
Trand jurisdictions have been divided
by the establishment of new states and
territories, never before have distinct
and established grand jurisdictions
been united."
The Socorro. N. M., Chieftain said !
last week that Socorro county would
cast an overwhelming vote for joint
statehood. That statement was made
before the earthquake began last Sun
day morning shak'ng some sense Into
Socorro voters. Those shocks are
plainly in disapproval of the joint
statehood sentiment which is said to
prevail In Socorro.

RECITATIONS BY PHONOGRAPH.
Since the beginning of the year a

ological faculty of the University of
Vienna. Professor Swoboda, the head
of the faculty, had noticed that while
reciting the students always made the
same mistakes. It then struck him
