Whole Name Decorates the Records
of Maricopa County.
Those who follow the public records
oT the county have often noticed
the name of ". J. Arkell in connec
tion with the incorporation of mining
companies, particularly those operat
ing in the gold lields of Nevada. There
are some who were also familiar with
the name of V. J. Arkell as -editor of
the great comic weekly. Judgv;. Many
have wondered if the former editor of
Judge and the more recent incorpor
ators of mining companies were the
same. Recent developments in the
mines of the rich Manhattan district
prove that Arkell. the incoriorator,
and Arkell. the editor, are one and the
same. Arkell at one time operated in
mines in Arizona. Many years ago he
was rated a man of millions, but of
late years he has been- prospecting in
the west. Again lie has struck it rich,
and. in his own language, "lie is head
ing back to Sherry's." in New York.

Beardsley and II. R. Bacon, recently
located the Hindocraft gold mine, in
the Manhattan camp. They were iu
Los Angeles several days ago to confer
with business men, and- have about
wound up their affairs. A goodly por
tion of the mine has been sold, but the
controlling interest is still vested in
the three original owners.
Back of his story of the discovery of
this gold mine by Arkell is one tilled
with vicissitudes, extending from the
metropolis across the continent and
ending in a Xeveda gold field.
Arkell was one of the best known
journalists of the Atlantic coast, and
his success as proprietor of Judge is
widely known. He amassed a fortune
while owning this paper, but when he
entered into new fields of business lost
practically everything.
In conversation wth a reporter for
the I,os Angeles Times, Mr. Arkell said
that the comic supplements of the daily
newspapers had driven the weekly and
monthly comic papers from the face of
the earth. He said that froia the mo
ment the big dailies began to print
colored supplements the exclusively
comic paper was doomed.
"I recognized this," he said, "several
years ago. and disposed of my holdings
in Judge to a company. The paper is
doing well, and will always do well,
but the days when the weekly comic
papers swayed public opinion with

Mr. Arkell was the host of President
Grant during his last sickness. It was
at Mr. Arkell's country place that the
president died. He talked interestingly
of the dark days that preceded the
demise of Grant, and how hfs home
seemed to be the center of the United
States at that time.
The investments of Arkell were un-
I happy ones, and about three years ago
j he found himself in straitened clreum
I stances. Nothing daunted, he came
west, and settled in the new mining
! town of Tonopah. Later he went to
Manhattan, and prospected diligently
j and with success.
j About six months ago he and his two
I young partners discovered the mining
ledge known as the Hindocraft mine,
and have since found that their for
tunes were made.

"I had a boy, recently," said a shop
work teacher in the New York city
schools, "who was so persistently out
of order that it became necessary to
adopt strong measures to reform him.
'Report to mo at 3 o'clock." I com
manded in a tone which conveyed some
knowledge to him of what he was
wanted for.
"At the appointed time the boy came
and was promptly put to polishing
bench tops. The benches are large
and the job of making them smooth
is not one which boys seek if left
to themselves
"At 3:30, the time allowed for pun
ishment, I called him to my desk and
supplemented what I had considered a
fair penalty with a heart-to-heart talk
on order. I concluded with a promise
to repeat the punishment should the
disorder continue, and then told him
to go home.
"But he lingered as if he too, wished
to say a word, ami finally raising his
hand for permission to speak, said:,
" 'May I come tomorrow to finish
those bench to;is?"
