SENATOR DAILKY'S PREDICA
MENT. Bt-nator Hailey will doubtless find
nbstacles which he cannot overcome in
his way back to the United States sen
ate. The Texas antipathy to trusts
and corporations, good and bad,
amounts to- a mania, and .Senator
Hailey has been pretty plainly identi
fied even with the bad ones, 'perhaps
the verv worst ones, the Kirby Lumber
eompany, and a branch of the Standard
Oil company, the last vestige of which
the Texans thought they had flung out
of the Lone Star state.
The defense, or rather the varied de
fenses of Senator Bailey, cannot mend
his case much in the eyes of his fellow
citizens. 1 '
'Ilia first statement, that he had been
led to believe that the Water9-Pierce
Oil company had severed its relation"
with the Standard when he procured
Its reinstatement in Texas, is not
strengthened in any way by his state
ment on Saturday night that th-
"Waters-Pierce company was readmit
ted in his absence. It could only be
Inferred that he meant by that to con
vey that he disclaimed any part in tho
restoration of the "Waters-Pierce com
pany. It must be inferred from his
former statement that he had aided,
as has been charged. In sufch restora
tion but that he did so under a mis
apprehension. As to Senator Bailey's contention
that a seat in the United States senate
$rn not deprive the occupant of a
ttjrht to practice law if he is oherwise
qualified will be generally admitted, J
but It must be conceded that he is
hedged about with certain limitations
which are not drawn about other law
yers. Senator Burton broke over tho.;
limitations and found himself in the
Jenltentiary.
. The restrictions, however, the vio
lation of which is charged against Sen
ator Bailey, are merely moral or ethl
Cttl. He is In no danger of the peni
tentiary and It appears, that he is al
most equally without prospect of being
condemned to another six years in the
aenatr.
The Texans might easily forgive hint
for being an attorney for a, corporation.
They might even forgive him for aid
ing the Standard Oil company in a
violation of the federal law's or the
laws of a sister state. But they can
hardly forgive him for conniving with
the Standard against the laws of
Texas.
A JOINTIST CONSTRUCTION.
T'.e lotntists of this territory and
New Mexico are interpreting the presi
dent's letter to Governor Kibbey with
reference to the charges of attempted
election frauds in this territory as a
rebuke to the governor. There is no
-doubt that tHe makers of the charges
Intended to injure the governor there
by but how the letter from the presi
dent can be construed to be a rebuke
only a man with the perverted reason
ing processes of a jointist can con
ceive. The letter was friendlier in tone and
less formal than the usual official
commun icatlon and the preslednt
moreover expressed an opinion that
the fabricators of the charges which
had called his letter out were liars. He
did not believe that there was a pur
pose to miscount the vote cast at the
statehood election but advised, in view
of the charges, that the jointlsts should
be gtven representation in the machin
ery of the election.
Similar advice was at the same tlnv
given Governor Hagerman of New
Mexico, who from the Jointist point o
view stands in no neeuVof rebuke.
The more such charges are lodged
with the president the truer will be
his measure of the men who are en
deavoring to bring Jointure about.
These same methods also farther re
move from possibility a revival of the
joint statehood project.
MR. COOPERS CAMPAIGN.
Hon. V. F. Cooper's campaign In the
north is of the whirlwind variety in ef
fect, though it is being made without
noise. Mr. Cooper is stating his case
to the voters in a plain and business
like way. and reports from along his
line of march are of the most encour
aging character. His meetings every
where have evoked more republican
enthusiasm than it had been thought
could be stirred up. It has taken the
form of confidence that he will win. He
Is indulging in no sentiment. He has
not uttered a word for the mere pur
pose of catching a vote. He is only
showing and conclusively, why it will
be better to send him to congress than
to return Delegate Smith.
Mr. Cooper will complete his tour
of the Imrth this week and will return
to Phoenix early next week, when thtjre
will be a reception something differ
ent from anything ever seen in Phoe
nix, accorded him. The Cooper sen
timent has grown prodigiously here
within the past week as it is doing
throughout the southern part of the
territory which he had previously has
tily canvassed.
Senator Beveridge a few days agl
predicted that, once the American flag
was raise-d over Cuba, It would float
there interruptedly forever. Ameri
cans generally will hope that the Indi
ana senator is mistaken. They will
be somewhat buoyed ,up, too. by the
senator's record as a predict er. It
will be remembered that he could fore
see nothing but the annihilation of
Japan by Russia and he had come al
most directly from the sceno of the
later hostilities. The senator was also
cocksure of the passage of the Ham
ilton statehood bill in its first, objec
tionable form, and when that failed h-
had reliable advance information that
Arizona was going to vote itself over
whelmingly into joint statehoxl.
Though the football season is not
far advanaced, Harvard has discovered
that the game cannot be played with
out the strenuosity allowed by the
old rules which in times of stress and
excitement are likely always to super
sede . the simplified rules.
The Globe genius who held a lantern
at the manhole of a locomotive yes
terday to show him whether he had let
enough oil run will always be in doubr
upon that point. He will be faintly
suspicious, though, that there was
some there.
There is going to be a shaking up
in the government printing office. In
a public document received at this
office yesterday the name of a coffin
nail was spelled c-i-g-a-r-e-t-t-e.

News has been received here of the
marriage of Eugene Siiker of Flag
staff and Miss Frances Bury of Phoe
nix, on Tuesday evening, October 2. at
8 o'clock. The wedding took place In
San Francisco at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Charles F. Priest of Buena Vista
avenue, they being the uncle and aunt
of the bride, and It will be of interest
to many to know that the ceremony
was performed by Rev. I.apsley A. Mc
Afee, formerly pastor of the Presby
terian church in this city.
After the ceremony a sumptuous
wedding supper was served and later
the newly married couple left for a
tour of southern California. At its
conclusion they will go to Flagstaff,
where Mr. Siiker is in business and
which will be their home for the pres
ent. The bride is a Phoenix girl, and ono
of the most popular and accomplished
young women who ever lived here. Sh.?
