NOTHING SERIOUS Wc trust that the outbreak of Gov ernor Kibhey last Saturday will not be followed by results serious to the party in the territory. It might have been supposed that such an utterance by tlie governor, who is looked upon in some quarters as the head of the party, would mean a split, which would doom republicanism t defeat in the territory and in many of the counties at the coining election. The governor's bitter arraignment of Hon. Robert K. Morrison perhaps the most active, disinterested party worker in Arizona, former Governor Murphy, and Mr. V. M. Murphy, al- i ways faithful party men. as well as al! who are opposed to instruction, a very respectable majority of the republi cans of the territory, might be regard ed as a declaration of bitter lactional war. But we are pleased to obseive that it is not so regarded. The remarks of the governor have not been taken seriously in any quarter; Those who have discussed his speech since Sat urday, have generally interpreted it to mean a loss of self-control, perhaps indicative of a state of mind which has been subjected to a great deal of tension within the last few months; there was no political point to be gained by that address. The last vote had been counted and the last word had been said that could in' any way influence the make-up of the Tucson convention. The scolding by the gov ernor it is believed, was the only pun ishment he believed could be visited upon those who had thwarted him and his fellow office holders. V . Disappointment is not lasting, and chagrin Is short lived. They are not stable bases foe a lasting political feud. Within a short time the govern or himself will be ready to admit that the majority of the republicans of Arizona are not "sinister offenders" because they cannot look at things from the angle of the office holders. something new under the sun, after all? Mr. Becker has executed a master i stroke, and If the people ol Wisconsin have any appreciation of genius his election as governor of Wisconsin is a foregone conclusion. Mr. Bryan's reputation for political astuteness will suffer accordingly, fo; it is perfectly plain that a balloon is the ideal vehicle for a man who makes a business of running for president, and yet he never grasped Its possibil ities. He has utilized the platform of a railroad train, public halls, theaters, churches, schoolhousVs and hotel piaz zas for stump speeches and lias occa sionally spoken out in the open, but he has never employed a balloon. 1 't it ! The Los Angeles Times, always a staunch republican paper, at present a strong administration paper and con fident of the nomination of Secretary Tal't. sees a great many serious ob stacles in the way of his election. The Times regrets that it cannot take the optimis tic view of the political future enter tained generally by republicans. The principal obstacle, the Times believes, is the period of hard times which has unfortunately fallen under republican rule; many people will be inclined to hold that party responsible for the depression and Mr. Hryan may be counted upon, the Times thinks, to fix tlie responsibility. Must thoughtful republicans already see that the party will not have a walkover next November. The wax has been roughened perhaps. less by the panic than it has since been by the federal office holders whose course has made many states doubtful, whoever may be the nominee in Chi cago. It cannot now be said that any re publican can carry New York, though Hughes might do so.' A situation has been brought about in Ohio which many republicans believe Taft cannot! overcome. Even Illinois and Wiscon sin, though Mr. Taft declared no con tests would be instituted in favorite son slates, have been so disturbed by federal activity Uiat the republicans are bitterly divided. Outside the southern stales, from which there will be contests. Mr. Taft has had clear sailing in democratic states, whose republican politics have been controlled by federal officials, but these states can offer no assistance in tlie presidential election. It is in the large and strong republican east, mid dle and New England states lhat the damage lias been done. I 1 t !
