THE FOURTH OF JULY
AT KtLVIN AND RAY
The Natal Day Celebrated in Both
Camps in a Fitting Manner.
Kelvin, July 7. (Sitct-iul Corres
pondence of The Republican ) The
Fourth of July in Kelvin was a per
fect summer day and all turned out
to celebrate in a glorious and- pleas
ant manner. The stores were open
several hours in the early morning,
giving all a chance to buy what fire
works they were short of in order
to foe In line for the grand outburst
at night. Everybody felt good and
started in to enjoy themselves In ,the
good old fashioned way of celebrat
ing the Diiy of Indejiendenee. Jack
Henness, the popular all around bus
iness man, started the ball to rolling
by opening several large crates of
watermelons, free to all. Fireworks
were popping and cracking all day
and there was quite a din at some
moments. Dan Creedon and his band
of cowboys were in Kelvin and gave
an exhibition of horsemanship. At
night Hon. J. J. Coleman and Jack

Henness made the hill along Main
avenue a hill of fir'". It was a beau
tiful sight and the best part of the
events of the (lay was that there was
nt a single accident or arrest.
At Hay there was also big linps.
Cy Cartinghntisp mi. I his band of
cowpnnchers were in town to attend
the. big dance and rendered a great
exhibition of bronco busting. There
was a prize offered for the best
rider ami Cy easily carried off the
honors of the day. Following the
bronco riding came the big dance.
All of Ray turned out to the dance
and things were kept humming all
lay to the tune of a numler of
stringed instruments. There were all
varieties of dances, from the Cowboy
Heel to the latest ballroom dance
In the prize waltzing Jake Griner
won first prize. To see Jake doing
his prize stunt was a treat. Ills
gracefulness and easy movements
would have done crrrtlt to the best
vaudeville artist in the country. Be
low arc a few of the best known
people who attended the dance:
Misses Iris Hickey. Maud Grlzzell,
Katy Aches. Mrs. Hickey, Mrs. Podge,
Messrs. Jake Oriner. Cy Carling
house. John Adams, Dick Adams and
Jimmie Davis.
Harry Cells Is now In charge of
the Final Mercantile store at Ray.
Marry is a very genial person and
having numerous good friends should
do a good business.
Ed Divine, one of Kelvin's most
IKipular young men, will spend a few
weeks in Florence. F,d met with
a very painful accident about a
month ago, having his kneecap brok
en, but we are glad to hear he is
progressing nicely.
J. W. Beebe and family have left
for the east. They will visit their
home in New York and Mr. Beebe
will also interview several capitalists
in reference to his various mining
enterprises. The Beebe family carry
the lest wishes of all for a pleasant
and successful journey. They will
remain 1n the east several months.
Speaking of the agricultural wealth
of Salt River valley, J. Kavanaugh
& Clarke of Troy can show produce
raised on a ranch In Dripping Springs
Wash which would surely put Pinal
county No. 1 on the list. They raise
cabbage on their ranch which will
measure four feet across. They will
weigh from three to twenty pounds.
These cabbages would surely carry
off the prizes. Speaking of spuds,
Mr. Kavanaugh has some of the fin
est in the land, nice thin skin
ones, with plenty of nutrition and
free of knots.
Mr. Jackson of Ray also can show
some of the finest cucumbers and
tomatoes that you ever saw. Kelvin
will never lack for fresh vegetables.
As Miss Halbert is convalescing
nicely it was not thought necessary
for Miss J. X. Baker, the nurse from
Phoenix, to remain, so Mrs. Snyder
is now attending her wants, and
Walter Thomas of Ray, who has had
TRIP
PilcKee
considerable experience In the east
dressing wounds and caring for the
sick, has her case In charge and
daily dresses her wounds. We all
look forward to a speedy recovery
for Miss Halliert and will be glad
to see her smiling face again In our
midst. ,
Mrs. Halbert has reopened her din
ing establishment, as the recovery of
her daughter. Miss Anna, is now an
assured fact In the very near fu
ture. S. A. Stewart, formerly of Mesa,
has opened a first class restaurant in
Kelvin. He has newly renovated a
building and equipped the restaurant
in a very attractive manner. Mr.
Stewart has had considerable restau
rant experience and Is looking for
ward to making some money in Kel
vin. During Postmaster Beebc's absence
Chas. McNeely, the ever smiling
manager of the Hercules Mercantile
Co.. will officiate as postmaster.
P'inal county was very pleasantly
surprised yesterday by a light fall
of rain. In some places the rainfall
was exceedingly heavy, but rather
light in this locality. This is the
first rainfall in three or four months
and it came at a very opportune
time as the wells were getting very
low. Rain is to be looked for any
day now.
Mr. Thomas of Dagger Well fame
was in town yesterday and was busy
telling people of the wealth out there.
The Kelvin ice plant, owned by
J. I. Coleman, Is certainly a life pre
server to Pinal county this kind of
weather. The plant is working night
and day, keeping up the supply for
orders coming in from all the sur
rounding country.
Jake Bates' livery stable Is still
doing business at the old stand. He
has a good stock of horses and rigs
for nil purposes and is always in
readiness to satisfy a customer.
Chas. MeOce's popular Southern
hotel also extends a welcome hand to
the many visitors to Kelvin. ( ine
can get as good lodging in Kelvin as
in Phoenix.
The Sultana Copper Co. and the
Eagle Mt. Co. have each put some
men to work. Things are starting
to move along slowly and it will ,
not be long licfore Kelvin and Ray
will be hives of industry.
Mr. and Mrs. Blackburne are going
for a trip east and thence to the
old country. Mr. Blackburne baa
liecn in Pinal county several years
and has been very successful. He
has sold several valuable copper
properties and only recently made a
large sale of some claims to eastern
capitalists. These claims were ad
joining the Sultana Arizona Copper
company.
The stropg wind during the" recent
storm played havoc with the awn
ings around Jack Henness' house.
All the poles were broken and the
canvas ripped in a nuinlwr of places.
Mrs. Henness was K-nned in for a
while, being caught between the fal
len poles and some teds on the
porch, but only suffered a severe
drenching.
Kelvinites were much startled to
see a girl with hair flying in the
wind, mounted on horseback, dash
ing through the town in the teeth
of the storm Monday, bound for the
Hoff house. I'pon inquiry it turned
out to lie Miss HallMTt's sister on
her way to see her. We trust that
she will not give us such a scare
again in a hurry, as every one
thought it was a runaway.
