How many went from r;Viii re or went in carriages and ether conveyances, was not learned. Doul-tless many more went over last evening for the ball. Cer tain it is that the day was a big success and everybody had a good time. One Pluenix man stated last evening that something over a thous and vehicles weie counted in the neighborhood of Drew's park. .JOPLIN ENGINEER ENTHUSED. Ed Hedburg, a mining engineer of Joplin. Mo., spent yesterday in Phoe nix and left last night for the east, in tending to stop off at Deraing en route. Mr. Hedburg has been in the Parker country for some time examining pro perties for English capitalists with whom El Paso and Deming men are associated. It was Mr. Hedburg's first visit to Arizona, but it will not be his last. He told a friend he met in Phoenix yesterday that he was simply amazed at the mineral showing in western Arizona and that he had been carried away with the country. notwithstanding the rather strenuous temperatures of summer time. He said that henceforth the lead and zinc fields of Missouri would no longer hold at tractions or him. He is billed for Arizona, with Phoenix as him home, just as soon a he can arrange to come west to reside. He believes that the Parker section will some day be as thickly spotted with big mines as' a red headed summer girl'a face is with freckles. TALLY ONE MORE. Frank Luke yesterday received, another one of those regular biennial dispatches from Ocean Park, for which he keeps the general form standing with only the date line and one word in blank. That word when filled in indicates whether it is a boy or girl and this time it is a boy. It makes four pairs and a half, or a total of nine, just one short of two hands and even the short hand in this case beats three of a kind. Mr. Luke was once a republican and even yet possesses something of the Roose veltian instinct in matters pertaining to the home circle. He can scarcely throw any dust in the eyes of Sam Webb or v. L. Osborn, two old -lime democrats, who contend that Roosevelt has stolen their principles, but five boys and four girls is going some for a young man and ought to insure his renomination for the office of county assessor. In a few more years he will be able to :ack the convention from his own fireside and manipulate a lead pipe cinch. A YAQUI AND A KNIFE AN OFFICER AND A GUN The Latter Proved to Be the More Effective Combination. Constable Murphy had a run ' in with three Yaquis early yesterday morning and he had to impress one of them with the barrel of his re volver. The three were making New National Cash Register for Sale $200 Easy Payments Regular $250 McNEILGO. 126-128 W. Washington St. Tho PEOPLE with tho GOODS opposite Court House trouble in the Redlight district when jthe constable came upon them. He took them into custody and was starting toward the juil with them. , One -of them said in SiKinish to another,-something about making a break for liberty. The constable eats Spanish for breakfast and !eing thus apprised of the intended break he Igot ready for it He seized one of .them, Francisco Garcia, by the back ,'of the neck and threw him down. When he arose he had a long Knne in his hand and started for the offi cer, who sidestepped and at the same time brought the Yaqui down again with a Mow with the gun. But he was on his feet almost instantly but this time he met the officer with his Igun aimed and cocked. The Indian I was ordered to nut his knife away. He stuck it Into his pocket still open and then while his hands were ele vated in the air, tho officer dis armed him. The trio was then taken to Jail where they will be dealt with later. The men lielong to one of the villages on the other side of the river. o NEW FREIGHT RATES FOR HAY AND GRAIN They Have Been Practically Adjusted and Will Shortly Be Published. Paul P. Hastings, general freight and passeenger agent of the S. F. P. & P. railroad company who has been In Phoenix for a couple of days was asked yesterday if there ws anything new to report In respect of the rail road rate situation. He said that he could only report progress. On the occasion of a recent visit to Los An geles he had perfected an agreement Specialties in Ladies' Low Shoes and Oxfords We have certainly the finest dis play of oxfords and low cut shoes for women, it has ever been our privilege to offer our trade. DIEHL Shoe Co. with General Freight Agent Barnwell for an adjustment of hay and grain rales from Phoenix to northern Ari zona, giving Phoenix shipjiers an ad vantage over California shippers on these commodities. These new rates he says will be published and an nounced soon. This is one of the adjustments promised wjieir the railroad traffic men met with the Commercial club last spring. The. right of this valley to that market is admitted by all and Mr. Hastings has been urging action but the officials of the main lines have been busy with through rate questions which has caused some delay. Mr Hastings says also, that the railroads are about ready to publish rates on other valley products to east ern points generally, that will be the same as rates from California to the east on similar products. Melons and oranges have already been enjoying these competitive rates and now other commodities are to be placed on the same list. He is not yet prepared to state just what they are nor what the rates will be but the matter will be made public soon. This action Is also ope of the matters agreed to when the traffic men were here. A REMARKABLE BILLBOARD DIS PLAY BY TH E EARL BURGESS I COMPANY. As remarkable an advertising dis- play as has ever been seen on the city boards is being displayed by the Earl Burgess forces. Every available space is covered with the pictorial represen tations of the various plays. No more clever advertising work has ever been seen -in this city. The man personally responsible Is George W. Haliday, the manager of the organization. Adver tising, wirh Mr. Haliday is a fine art, and. means nx much; to the business end of afieatrlcal company as play or players.- Attract tlic eye with color make them stop, look and ponder, and you'll draw them to the theater, says Mr. Haliday. Mr. Haliday is the fin est type of the enterprising young Am erican hustler, and he will introduce many clever novelties that will make the hoodoo on the Olympic theater a thing of the past. There will be check rooms for babies, pink teas on the stage, marriage ceremonies in full view of the audience, pig socials, man hat ers nights and other events all calcu lated to keep the , public interest at fever heat. One of the latest of- the big musical productions, contains a song that has attained a wonderful degree of popu larity. It is "I Want What 1 Want, When I Want It."
