The Arlsona Republican Is on sal at all of Amos' street news stand wagons In Los Angeles, Ban Diego and long Beach. For President, WILLIAM H. TAFT. For Vice-President JAMES S. SHERMAN. For Delegate to Congress RALPH. H. CAMERON AecL PHOENIX, ARIZONA, AUG. 29, 1908. LEWIS SPRINGS ON THE MAP. The candidacy of Mark Smith lias at least served one good purpose, the discovery of Lewis Springs, Cochise county, where a big democratic pic nic is to be held tomorrow, Sunday. Mark Smith is to be there and like wise H. F. Ashurst the eloquent, who seems to have transferred his affec tions to Mr. Smith from William R. Hearst who he declared a few years ago was the best man who ever lived with the single exception of the Savior, or words to that effect. Imitation is the sincerest flattery, hence it is with some pleasure that republicans see the democratic lead ers in emulation of Mr. Taft who opened his campaign from ' another springs resort on the other side of the continent. Mr. Taft though, se lected a place that was already dis covered while the Arizona democratic leaders want to get as far away as possible from the searchlight for fear they may do some of their thinking out loud. They are planning to fire the first gun on Sunday in the hope that the Impression will go forth that their cause is a holy one. It will be no use. They have succeeded In fooling the Arizona people quite frequently, it is admitted, but they cannot fool Providence and it is hardly believed they will be able to give the people a "bum steer" this year. A CHALLENGE. Th Rait river valley is too well bred to point to Its own virtues and attractions, in the presence of those who are lacking in either, merely through conceit. It is only that peo ple may know where they can go to better themselves, that mention is again made of the fact that while Augusta and Columbia and a score of other big cities are suffering of floods this valley is just right. Topograph ically it is sufficiently sloping for good drainage but too level for tor rential rains to wash anything away, even if they occurred here which they seldom do. And there can be no shortage of water for the govern ment insures an ample supply. Cli matically it has every other city in America except the resorts beaten to a standstill twelve months In the year and it beats the resorts eight months in the year for comfort and all the time for health. Financially it is one of the very few places im mune from panics. Socially and morally there are no degenerate mil lionaires and but a small number of the naturally vicious element. Relig iously there are all kinds of churches but no one is forced to attend them unless he chooses. Politically the two old parties are both strong enough to put up a rattling good fight every time the ballot box is trotted out and there are enough "ists" and "isms" to keep both parties guessing. These statements having been repeat edly made and being susceptible of proof The Republican challenges ev ery doubting American citizen to come out here next winter and un der take to prove a contrary state of affairs. The Republican does not care if 50,000 men accept the .chal lenge, it will stand its ground and back every word written. Come on, you long suffering, prosperity seek ing pilgrims! The Republican dares you to come. Wanted Eight million dollars of the people's money with which to speculate on the outcome of the election. If elected I pledge the guaranty of bank deposits unless a republican congress defeats my pur pose. Anyhow I get the office. The people must be protected. Address B., care of Commoner, Lincoln, Neb. Globe led the Arizona procession with a big republican rally at the Bijou theater on Wednesday night, under the auspices of the Taft-Sher-man club. Harry K. Thaw may le crazy but a lot of saner men would have used less diplomacy than he did in his comments on the Hand report con- cerning District Attorney Jerome. Mr. Thaw seems to know the relative value of sugar and molasses as a bait for flies. If there is any vice presidential nominee who has been overlooked by the notification committees let him ieak up. says an exchange. Time is flying, and the campaign snouia ue under full headway as soon as pos sible. What's the matter with Pittsburg? There hasn't been a notorious scan dal made public there for a week. Is it possible that all the Pittsburg so ciety is now at Atlantic City.' DAVID B. HILL HOME FROM TOUR ABROAD Says He Will Do All He Can For the Election of Bryan. New York, Aug. 28. Ex-Senator David B. Hill, the former democratic leader, called on National Chairman Mack after his arrival from Europe today and told Mack he would do all he could to help the campaign for Bryan and Kern. Hill declined a dis cussion of the political situatioi wiih newspaper men. He said he had been abroad for his health and w"as feeling fine. "Hill assured me." said Mack tonight, "that he was for the ticket and would do what he could to aid Bryan's elec tion. While his health may no Der mit him to take an active part. Hill will be ready to help us in an advisory capacity." Mack said tonight that no chairman for the eastern headquarters had been selected. BAR ASOCIATION. Seattle.
