The Arizona Republican Is en sale at all of Amos' street news stand wagons in Loa Angeles, Ban Diego and Long Beach. For President, WILLIAM H. TAFT. For Vice-President JAMES S. SHERMAN. For Delegate to Congress RALPH. H. CAMERON PHOENIX, ARIZONA, SEPT. 29, 1908 FOR AS A REASONABLE MAN WOULD MEW IT. It mut be apparent to anyone, as Chief Justice Kent remarked yester day, that Arizona's chances of state hood, promising as they are, would he greatly enhanced by a republican victory. The powers that be are dis posed to admission. They are anx ious to end this territorial business as soon as possible and . they have been advised by a republican national convention to end it, not ' pledged. mind you, but advised. The powers that be are the re publicans of the senate and the house. They probably will not require a "sure thing." They will not want a euaranty that the new states shall be republican, but as they are repub licans and human, they will not lay aside other business, at the short session to create a couple more cer tain democratic states and so In crease the democratic representation in the senate by four and in the house by two. They have not even been advised by. the convention to give us statehood at the short ses sion and it is only recently that it was imagined that such good fortune was possible. It is reasonable to conclude that if congress exceeds its "advices" in our favor it must have some encourage ment to do so. It must be given at least a slight assurance that the re publicans here have a fighting chance. Only the result of the territorial election can furnish such assurance. THE COMPLAINT OP GILA. It sounds almost sacrilegious to us of the valley when we hear any one allude to the Roosevelt dam as a nui sance, yet that is the way the people of Gila county or some of them look at it. Resolutions have been pre pared to be presented in both the party conventions, praying for .relief in some shape to cover the damage which the reservoir building has al ready wrought to that county's finances. It is declared that the dam building has already "eradicated," pulled up by the roots, we suppose, and not submerged, a considerable part of Gila county's taxable wealth and that .still 'more will be "eradicat ed" as the water level raises. But that is not all of it. nor yet the worst of it The enterprise which was calculated to "eradicate" the taxable wealth brought together so many people of good and bad habits that the field of the peace authorities widened in the ratio in which Gila county real estate receded before the encroaching waters until it costs the county $2000 a year to keep order among the dambuilders before whose coming there was only the perfect peace and death-like stillness of the mountain gorge. ' The legislature is to be asked to do something to restore the financial equilibrium as between Maricopa and Gila and if the legislature can do nothing, the delegate in congress will be asked to show what stuff he is made of. The "ginger" which appears to have been injected into the campaign is not in the campaign at all but i has been rubbed on it by that busy body. Sir. Hearst Those who mis- j tnke it fnr n hnlthfnl stimulant f would think the same . thing about cayenne pepper on a raw sore. The situation which has been presented is not instructive, only- interesting and amusing. Of course, Mr. Smith will be given a respectful hearing tonight but those who really want statehood at an early period will hardly be con- vinced that Mr. Smith has the goods on his person or anywhere else sub ject to his order. It strikes us that . Senator - Foraker several days ago made statements which Invited a reply. But then no man can be expected to reply to everybody at once. The Chicago Record-Herald under the head of Army Notes announces that General Apathy has been re tired and has been succeeded by Col. G. Whizz. The circus carried away several thousand dollars of Salt River Valley money this morning. Well. who cares? What's money for, anyway? None Whatever. "You can't make bricks without straw." .. "May be not. But is that any rea son for putting it into cigars." o COUNTY CONVENTION 01" PROHIBITION'S Nominations for County Officers Will Be Made Next Saturday. S. S. Green, chairman of the pro hibition convention, authorizes the an nouncement that the Maricopa county republican convention will meet Satur day, October 3, at l:3i o'clock-tn Lam son's hall for the purpose of placing in nomination candidates for the coun ty offices, and such other business as may come before it It is expected that the Honorable Frank Sibley of Tucson, a well known member of the prohibition party and a delegate to the recent national con vention, will be present and address the convention. The party managers desire a large attendance at the convention and re quest all in sympathy with them to come out and hear Mr. Sibley.
