The Santa i Fe K.iilroad company exhibited many of its' beautiful paintings in its own building. Many of these were by fam ous artists and depicted life and scenes in the southwest. ! An interesting portion of the exhib its made by the reclamation service was that of the immense photographs anil transparent pietures of the dif ferent government projects now In the course of construction in . different j parts of the country. The transparent 'pictures being particularly fine, having the effect of making the different ob jects stand out in relief. The dam at ilranite Reef was the subject of one of these plates and the intake at the i Roosevelt dam w as another. The for estry service had several views of the i'big trees" of California on similar j plates. Among the many other attractions .furnished for the entertainment of the guests during their stay in the New 'Mexico town was the military feature, there being two troops of I'. H. Cavalry from Ft. Wingate, X. M. and cadets from the I'nivcrsity of New Mexico and Roswell Military college. In a prize drill given, the I'nivcrsity cadets 'came out with the honors. Several fine bands wore in attendance Includ ing one from old Mexico. BRYAN-KERN CLUB MEETS The democratic organization known as the l!ryan-Kern club, at a meeting held on Monday evening last, nominat ed L. V. Outfrie for justice of the peace of Mesa, precinct and V. J. I.e itaron was chosen for constable. The delegation to Phoenix of which J. I). Loper was made chairman was in structed for Don C. Babbitt for coun ty treasurer. It has been learned later that Mr. Le Baron has declined to accept the nomi nation of constable and therefore another will probably be chosen. FALL MILLINERY OPENING The firm of A. The Karl Burgess Co. that made such a splendid impression on their last vis i it to Mesa, opened a return engagement 'at the Vance Auditorium last night. iThe play given was the Little Minister. and no more charming play has ever been seen in this city. The famous story of the weavers of Thurms has been one of the biggest successes on the American stage and brought much 'fame to that well liked actress Miss I Mamie Adams. j The Burgess Co. has been greatly strengthened since the last visit. Miss I Anderson, the new leading w oman Is I a remarkably clever actress, and her I performance of I.adv Babbie last night was exceptionally clever. The new leading man is Jas. Cunningham, .a I very handsome chap, and an actor of I real ability. I The vaudeville features include the j Kelry Sisters, three young women w1n have been hoadlincrs on all the big ir Icuits and whose act last night fairly ! brought a whirlwind of applause. Then there is Billy Cumniings. a singer who can act. Cummings is magnetic and brings out all the points of a song anil his voice has a quality rarely heard outside the operatic stage. That dain ty Miss Rothe is still with the com pany and charmed her hearers as of ! yore. Pretty Miss Bronridge was as w'ell liked as ever. The company is .better in every way than tx fore and it hat is saying a good deal, as no com pany that has ever visited Mesa has : been better liked. Tonight's plav will be Northern powerful story of the famous Massacre. No stronger plav has ever been written on the Indian question. The leading male role is John Swiftwind, a full blooded Sioux, w ho has been educated at Harvard uni versity, and who occupies the post of assistant surgeon for (Jen. Crook's bri gade at Fort Terry, Mont., during the Indian troubles. The role will be in the hands of Louis Lytton. A big surprise is promised for tomor row night when that remarkable play "The Devil" will be presented. The Devil is the sensation of the season. It has caused more argument and dis cussion, than any recent dramatic of fering. The play while daring is so brilliant and fascinating, that it simply holds the audience in a spell of en chantment. It is at present being play ed by Ml the best stock companies in the country, and packing the theaters to the doors. Mesa will have an op portunity tomorrow night to see what this latest dramatic novelty is like. There wiil doubtless be a big crowd on hand to witness this out of the ordi nate production. FUNERAL OF CHARLES FRIEND Yesterday morning funeral services over the remains of Charles Friend whose t'eath occurred. In Maricopa Sunday night last, took place from the undertaking parlors of Hodnett & Carr here. The remains were accompanied from Maricopa to this city by Mrs. Friend and J. P. Friend, a brother of the de ceased. The following were the ptiH-hearers: F. I'. Curley, V. K. Smith, Claude Can non, F. Giles, A. A. Jones and Guy Al loway. After the last sad rites, the remains were interred in the Mesa cemetery. Mrs Friend will return at once to the old home at Bay city. Michigan where she will take up her residence. Mrs. Friend recently suffered the loss of her father, who also died at her home here about two weeks ago anil has the sym pathy of the residents here in her deep bereavement. The Maccabees of which order the deceased was a member con ducted services at the grave. The minister and his most-worthy wife have been untiring in their efforts to build up the church in every war and do all In their power for the ad vancement of the cause to whicji they have no wholly consecrated thcir:Iives. Under Mr. Crouch's charge, the membership of the church has been nearly doubled, lacking only about three of being twice as large as it was when he took the charge. Mr. Crouch and family take with them to their new home the best and most hearty wishes of the entire community, for their health, happiness, and prosperity. They number their friends in the Gem City among every denomination repre sented here. Mrs. Crouch and young son. Paul, will leave for Tucson either today or tomorrow, and Rev. Crouch and Char lie will go direct to Tombstone being joined later by Mrs. Crouch at that place. They epect to leave this week. Miss Mary, the daughter, is now the guest of an aunt residing in Tucson. AMBITIOUS ENTHUSIASTS The Mesa Contestants Are Prizes. After MR. A Crouch who has been in ittetidance at the conference of the Methodist Episcopal church, which has just adjourned its session in Tucson, returner! home yesterday morning. At the conference it was decided that Rev. Crouch be transferred from his charge in this city to a similar one at Tomb stone and that Rev. A. L. Haw ley, a minister of the Methodist church at Jerome be sent to fill the pulpit in Mesa. Rev. Mr. Crouch has just closed the work of three years of ministering to the large congregation here and It Is with regret of the entire community that he leaves for other fields of labor. His work here has been of a high or der, and he has labored most success ful. During the three years that Rev. Crouch and family have resided In Mesa, they have endeared themselves to the hearts of all with whom they came in contact. Eugenia Guthrie and Walter Tway are busy every evening for an hour or so hustling for new subscriptions and renewals for The Republican. They are getting a large number of promises land expect to soon line out big scores. The people of Mesa will see that both of these young hustlers get first choices at the best of scholarships or bring to Mesa that J1000 Baby Grand Vose piano.
