Officer Mainz, was tried in the jus tice court at Ash Fork today for trespassing on the patented lands of E. L. Patterson of Ash Fork. Garrett pleaded guilty, was con victed, and paid all costs Including the expenses Incurred fn the process of arrest and transportation. The trespass occurred In November, 1908, and Is the first conviction of its kind in the history of Arizona. Ash Fork, Ariz., Feb. 23. (Special.) J. M. New York, Feb. 23. Suspicion and distrust of speculative position in the stock market spread rapidly today and brought the fabric of values down with a crash. The conviction was quick In forming, after the opening of the steel market, to the competition of last week, that the stock market position was artificial and had been brought about by false assumptions of the trade position. Various factors combined to accent uate the weakness. The serious view taken In Indon paved the way for a renewal of the downward course. Another reduction in the price of copper and the new trial of the Stand ard helped increase the gloom. Read ing sold as low as IIS. a loss for the day of lO'j. points. United States Steel sold down to 41Vi and closed at the lowest, a loss since Saturday of 4 points. Liquidation spread through out the market and prices at the close were off from 3 to C points In all the active stocks. iionds were weak. Total sales, par value. J7.2LI0.O0O. There was a I sharp advance in London tin market. prices being over above closing figures last week; spot quoted -30 15s.; futures, 132 5s. The local mar ket was firm and quiet at $28.87',41i' $29.25. Copper was lower in London. Spot was quoted at 56 5s.; futures, 57 2s. 6d. Ixcally the market was dull and lower, quotations being: Lake. $ 1 2.75 U $13.25; electrolytic. $12.501 $12.75; casting. $12.37 i $12.62'-i. Lead was higher. London, 13 10s. Decid ing the case of the Hammond Packing company of Chicago vs. the state of Arkansas favorable to the state, the supreme court of the United States i J. today upheld the constitutionality of the anti-trust law of Arkansas. Sensational bull ish news from fc.urope caused a pyro- j technical display at the opening of, the wheat market, during which May delivery passed the previous high rec ord mark and sold at $1.16. Later in the session the record was again smashed when the price touched $1.16. ' The strength abroad was caused by drouth news from India and the disturbed political situation in Eu rope. The upturn at the start brought out liberal realizing sales, which caused a quick reaction, the price of May delivery being forced down to $1.15.
