PHOENIX ATHLETES
ARE ALL REGISTERED
Harry Groves Will Be Given Hi
Final Try-Out on Tuesday Evening
In an Item yesterday morning con
cerning the Elks and the Indian
school band, a jocular remark was
made concerning the necessity of
union curds for the Fhoenix athletes
who are also going to the Los
Angeles show with the expectation of
cleaning up things. That the Joke
may not be misunderstood it is fur
ther explained that the athletes, ama-.
teurs though they are, do have to gain
a certain recognition by registration,
but that has already been attended to
and everything is In apple pie order.
Harry McLean, the Indian who has
a passion, lots of wind and some
muscle for running Marathon races,
Harry Orove. the 10l yard time killer,
and Ken tioodinun, who makes a half
mile faster than some horses can run,
are all registered, entered Jn their
respective races, and acknowledged by
the Amateur Athletic association of
I the coast. The association moreover
has agreed to furnish transportation
and hotel expenses for .the men and
their trainer, John E. Lewis, and
everything is in fine shape. There Is
nothing to do now but go over to
Los Angeles and take the money
and glory. The -boys feel that they
have been treated very nicely by the
association, and by George W. Bra-
den, physical director of Occidental
college, who is general manager of
the meet. They expect to leave early
this week, though the exa-t date is
not yet fixed. Harry Groves, the 10
yard man. will have his final try-out
at the fair grounds Tuesday evening
at 6:45 and the occasion will afford
a little sport for others who feel- that
they can run some, or who desire
to see Grove sprint. He will run
1i1 yards against any and all com
ers, handicapping himself in accord
ance with the judgment of his train
er. One opponent, Ed Luke, has al
ready entered himself as a pacemaker
with h handicap credit of ten yards
and any others may get in who want
to make the race interesting. Those
not quite as brave At Luke will be
given a little more start, and alto
gether it Is expected the race will
prove rather an interesting one.

niglitwoek. Bible readings at 3. Tues

Sunday the following ministers were
present: Rev. Gardner of Cartright.
Ilev. Triplctt of Tompe. Rev. McKay,
just arrived from Tennessee to take
up work. A number of Tempo people
drove over for the day.
Yesterday marked a great advance
ment at the camp meeting services be
ing held by Evangelist G. W. Korman
at the Methodist camp ground, end of
Brill car line.
There was good, live, wide-awake
singing at every sen-ice; also special
numbers. The singing ojf itself is
enough to draw a crowd. Mr. Korman
can surely make people sing. The sub
ject of the rmirning discourse was,
"Living Epistles." Text. II. Cor.. 3:2-3:
"Ye are our epistles, written in our
hearts, known and read of all men.
For us much as re are manifestly de
clared to be the epistles of Christ, min
istered by us. written not within but
with the spirit of the living God, not in
tables of stone, but in the flesh tables
of the heart."
Rev. Korman said, in irt: An epis
tle is a written communication between
two nersons or oarties. The need to
day is Christians with Christianity en
graved on the heart: If we can only
be soft and pliable under the hand of
Ood so He can write deep His en
graving, then we could be used to
win the world for Christ.
Christianity engraved on the hep.rt
is Christianity in its most legible form.
Xo one is deceived thereby even a
child can read It.. It is Christianity
in Its most convincing form. Volumes
have been written on the evidences of
Christianity, but one life redeemed
from a life of sin and shame and
changed to the pure and true, is more
convincing than them all. It is also
In its. most persuasive, enduring and
;-divinest form.
Epistles of Christ, every believer
should so live that when the world
.reads him it will find it was reading
Jesus Christ. Can you trace the di
vine hand in your life? Are you a
living epistle? Or are you an epistle
of idleness, of delay, of gloom?
: At the afternoon sen-ice Rev. McKay
"jrave a timely discourse upon the first
chapter of Ephesians.
The song sen-ice at 8 o'clock was
the best of the meeting. The text for
the evening was from Matt., 26:22:
Lord is it IT'
The text tonight is the most personal
that could he brought to an audience
like this. "Lord, is it I?" The ques
tion came because Jesus had said one
of you shall betray me.
Suppose I should say to this audi
ence. One of you will betray your Lord,
and could knov, at once would come
the o.uestion. "Lord, Is it I?" But let
us see. Betray yes, by living nearer
the world than Jesus Christ. By be
ing more loyal In business than in the
church.
The trouble today is the church Is
asleep, and the world is lost and on
the road to destruction. Boys of prom
inent families are in the gamblers' den; ,
girls of some of the best homes are
going astray, all because of the lives J
Of professed Christians. "Lord, is it

A GOOD FOURTH Yesterday was
an exceptionally quiet Fourth, void of !
any accidental events. A large assort-
ment of drunks was roped Into the
cooling recesses of the city jail, but
not a fiht was reported. Chief of
Police Moore, stated that not an arrest
had been made, because of the shoot
ing of giunt firecrackers, or large fire
works, against the ordinance, and he
hopes that he will not be compelled to
make any today.
