HE TURNED THE CRANK GOT NO RESPONSE Dan Kleinman in His Efforts to Get Central Was Very Unsuccessful. Councilman Dan Kleinman rushed Into Everybody's drug store yesterday morning desiring very quick connec tion over the telepnone. He stepped to the phone aid began turning the crank. After he had been stooping over in rather an uncomfortable posi tion fur upwards of three minutes he gave the crank another vigorous turn and still there was nothing doing in the vicinity of the central station. To Mr. Kleinman it appeared that the central operator had left the country with the local manager or was trying to get a nap before answering a call. The wait became monotonous and the councilman ttnlimbered himself and staod straight in front of the phone as he delivered a very plain old-fashioned I talk. After another unsuccessful but i nevertheless a very vigorous attempt to get central, one of the clerks very courteously pointed out to Mr. Klein man that he had been turning the crank of the pencil sharpener which has a position near the bell crank of the phone. The councilman was vis ibly embarrassed when he saw th; I he had unintentionally :.haved up nearly a whole pencil that one of the em ployes had left in the sharpener. H complained some of the heat and ven tured a suggestion that probably those who had been witnessing his perform ance were .tliirsty.
