Carroll Johnson a pa in made a win ning in his famous "That Minstrel Man" act last night to a parked house. His song,' "tin Kasy, Mabel," is too good to be heard only once, for each time it is rendered there is something new presented. Joe Egan's act has made the higgott hit since his stand here in the past few nights, last night being the best of all. Joe is pleasing in his ways, hiis a fairly good voice, a goodly round of puns and new jokes, which he han dles easily and fully, lle could be held over another week and would make a hit in another change of act. Johnstone and Cooke, wh' have placed such a breezy act this past week, h;td in re of a chance to strike their regulation, gait last night and were the best since their appearance here Tuesday night. There is some thing about the act that, though of it self not a heavy one, makes more tlifin good with every audience before which it is placed. COLISEUM. Although "The Chinese Nugget" is the feature this week, Temple and O'Brien came in for -a large hand at both performances last night, and were given heart. Their work was above their average since being here. O'Brien delivers a class of humor. backed by Miss Temple, that is out of the ordinary. The moving pictures and .Illustrated stmgs caused no small amount of- u stir in both audiences. The new bill for Tuesday night will spring a sur prise, so say Managers Beeves and Wood. You Never Make a Mistake Eating At The rolest, Cleanest Place ..In Town Adam b (grill HOTEL ADAMS The first section of the Selby niusi cal comedy company arrived in Phoe- nix yesterday, after a delay caused by some of the most harrowing circum stances, that a theatrical manager has ever been forced to contend with. Two of those who were signed for member ship in the companv committed suicidi within a wetk of each other, both suicides being on a Friday. Those who are acquainted in theatrl cal circles are aware of the fact that theatrical folk are just a little bit more superstitious than most other people, and two suicides at the very inception of the company was more than the other members of the com pany could stand. They simply- flew to the four points of the compass, and Hal Selby, with a theater waiting for him in Phoenix, and dates signed up, went about it for the second time to gather in a new cast to fit the require ments of the comedies he had in hand. The company was rehearsing in Los Angeles Friday, August 13. Maurel Bonardeau. a tenor who had passed some years in Europe cultivating his voice, was at the" morning rehearsal He vont to his rooms for luncheon and did not return. He was sent for and was then found dead In his apart ments. The rest of the company quit on the instant. Selby went' to San Francisco and gathered In some of the best players connected with the Fischer company. Palsy Court, whose name in private life is Roth, was engaged as sou brette and brought to Los Angeles. She rehearsed with Selby's new com pany there and hold down an engage ment at Lons- Beach In the evenings. She had recently separated from her husband, Al Roth. One morning, just one week after Bonardeau killed him self, Daisy Court was awakened by a pistol shot in front of her door. She jumped out of bed, opened the door and stumbled over the'body of Al Rith, her husband. That meant that Selby had to find a new eoubrette. He finally made ar rangements to get El ma Ellwood, who was playing at the Los Angeles theater under the management -of Sullivan and Considine. Miss Ellwood was released from her engagement to night and will then come to Phoenix. She is said to be a very beautiful woman and a charming; actress. i Henry Auerbach, the chief comedian of .the company, left Los Angeles List night with the rest of the company for Phoenix. In the cast are Robert Leonard, who was leading man of the Princess theater of San Francisco for some. time, and the leading tenor of the Temple--pera company that dayed lately at the Auditorium, Los Angeles. Auerbach has played in many of the principal burlesque companies In the East. Another member' of the cast is Harry Oaks, who has been playlpg character parts at the Belasco in os Angeles. - Dave Morris, who, by the way, was born in Phoenix, will be the director of the musical numbers. He Jias put on the musical numbers at the Madison Square roof garden. New York, and directed the company. Zoruh Bates, who for a year wa-s a leading lady at the Grand in Los An- Vital Strength comes from proper food. Read "The Road to Wellville," in pkgs. Cf : V geles and has played with Ferris Hart, and Murray and Mack in soubrette roles, will be of .the cast. Then there is the chorus, which will consist of eight peaches, or. four pairs. The plays are all royalty productions, the book and lyrics by Charles Alpine, with music specially arranged for each production. None of the shows have ever been seen in Phoenix before. The company will ojen Tuesday night with "A Woman Hater," a musical comedy. The bills will be changed twice a week. The second show to be put on will be the "Belle of Boston."
