In putting Prof. Francisco Ferrera to death the Spanish government has only aggravated its domestic difficukies. Barred from the news by a rigid cen sorship, the workingmen'and socialists of Spain will be slow to learn of the tragedy, but when they are Informed there will be more disorder. The dis- patches from other European countries show that the radical element every where is excited. Mobs of thousands of sympathizers with the Spanish rev olutionists are troubling the authori ties of France, Italy and Austria, and it will be strange indeed if their in fluence is not felt in Spain to the great embarrassment of the government. Irof. Ferrera was one of the leading educators of Spain. He was a man of acknowledged uprightness and cleanness personally, and was a writer and a dreamer. He was a socialist of the educated type with which Amer icans are becoming somewhat famil iar through their acquaintance with such men as Joseph Patterson, Upton Sinclair, and Lincoln Steffens. The Spanish government charged Ferrera with having been an accomplice in the revolutionary uprising of a few weeks ago in which the city of Barcelona and many towns were taxed the utmost resources of the army. Ferrera was a theoretical revolutionist, however, and it may be doubted whether he could have been charged with more than a moral responsibility for the republican and socialistic sentiment which is taking such a hold on the working classes of Spain. His friends allege that his trial was a farce, and that there was no proof of his con nection with the Barcelona riots. As everybody knows, the riots in Barce lona and elsewhere in the peninsula were directly caused by the govern ment's conscription of its reserves for an unpopular war with the Moorish tribesmen. No doubt Prof. Ferrera was largely responsible for this anti war feeling. The socialists of conti nental Europe now number millions of voters, and throughout the socialist ranks of every country there is preach ed a propaganda against all wars in which workingmen are required to fight each other. Notwithstanding the rosy accounts of Spanish successes, the Spanish gov ernment is confronted by the fact that its army is making poor progress in subduing the Moors, and the war Is no more popular than it was. The ex ecution of Ferrera will, of course, in tensify the bitter feeling of the masses against the government. Regardless of the question of his guilt, it would have been wise to par don Ferrera after his conviction. But ' Spanish traditions know nothing of clemency, and the Spanish government has seldom indicated a knowledge of real statesmanship. There may be lit tle foundation for the prophecies that the execution of Ferrera will lead to the downfall of the monarchy itself, but Spain has succeeded In adding length to her days of trouble. Parsons a False Alarm. "Uncle Joe" Cannon Is generally for tunate In the enemies he makes. It has been necessary for him to wait but a week in order to have the Tarsons charges against him disproved by evi dence which cannot be controverted. Congressman Parsons charged that through a deal engineered for the Joint benefit of Speaker Cannon and the Tammany organization in New York, the speaker had the support of Tam many congressmen in his fight with insurgent representatives over the house rules, and Tammany had the support of "up-state" republican mem bers of the New York legislature in the defeat of certain ballot reform leg islation promoted by Governor Hughes. State Senator Raines of New York shows by the record that the reform bills in question were supported by every republican member from "above the Bronx" except one, and that of the three republican senators from New York City who voted against the meas ures two were friends of Governor Hughes. And the New York Sun shows by the record that Speaker Can non's contest with the insurgents was disposed of long before the ballot re form bills were considered by the New York legislature. If there was any deal for the defeat of the ballot bills It was a deal between republican and demo cratic members of the legislature from the city of New Yofk and as every body knows, such deals are of common occurrence. There Is nothing but Con gressman Parsons' unsupported word to support his charge that Speaker Cannon was a party to any deal with Tammany. Parsons, by reason of his position in congress, succeeded in creating a week's sensation, but he retires as a false alarm. . ,t. Interecting Advertisements. "There is Just one fault I have to find with The Republican," writes an admiring reader from California, "and I suppose that shouldn't be called a fault; I don't like to read so many ad vertisements." Readers living at a distance are of course deprived of the advantage of dealing with this paper's local adver tisers, but evei the reader we have quoted confesses that he does read the advertisements; and if he had oppor tunity to avail himself of their advan tages he would readily admit that they are not only one of the most Interest ing features of the paper, but to the reader one of the most profitable, fea tures. There is abundant evidence that many of the advertisements are read before any other contents of the paper are examined. Hundreds of housekeep ers, for example, find daily opportun ities to make such saving in their buy ing that they offset the cost of a month's subscription over and over again. The advertisements of live bus iness men in a widely circulated news paper are read, we are convinced, quite as thoroughly as the news and by many readers more thoroughly than they read the news. The New York Herald, one of the greatest and most generally circulated papers in the world, constantly sub ordinates news matter to advertising. Its front page, for instance, which in most papers would be filled with news, is given over to advertisements. In a world of various tastes all readers do not agree on what is the most inter esting department of a newspaper; but it is safe to say that advertise ments are read more earnestly than any other portion. Pleasing to Japan. In one respect, at least, former Min ister Crane has shown himself to be lacking in taste as well as tact two essential qualifications for a minister to China or to any other country- No phase of the controversy between Mr. Crane and the state department war ranted him in repeating anything that was said to him in confidence by Pres ident Taft. As was most natural, after having selected Mr. Crane for the Im portant appointment to China, Mr. Taft discussed with him the main features of our oriental questions. It would have been entirely proper for Mr. Crane to advise the president privately that Mr. Taft's Instructions had been mis understood, but no exigency justified him In publishing to the world the statements made to him in private for his guidance as minister. The whole unfortunate incident Is without pleasant features for anybody in the United States, or any power except Japan. The press of Europe Is already commenting to the effect that Japan Is powerful enough to in fluence this government in its choice of minister to China. It Is pointed out that Mr. Crane was an ardent sympathizer with Russia during the Russo-Japanese war; that he sub scribed 15.000 to a relief fund organ ized by the empress of Russia; that his appointment was not received in a friendly spirit by Japan, and that this is the hidden reason for his recall by the state department. Mr. Crane has merely succeeded in pleasing Japan and our unfriendly critics abroad. One Thousand Successful Men. The Juvenile Court Record has com piled a list of "one thousand success ful men." By "successful" is not meant merely the money-makers, but men as well who have given to the world new conceptions of steam, electricity, con struction work, art, education, and so forth. In other words, it Is a list of men who have helped the world ad vance. The list shows how these men started In work, and how they gained their footholds. Three hundred started as farmers' sons. Two hundred started as messenger boys. . ' Two hundred were messenger boys. Two hundred started as newsboys. One hundred were printers appren tices. One hundred were apprenticed In manufactories. Fifty began at the bottom in rail way work. Only fifty had wealthy parents to give them a start. The list is full of inspiration for every ambitious boy. If Senator Don Portola's ghost takes any interest in the San Francisco cel ebration of his discovery of the Gold en Gate, it must be modified by re gret that the discovery' led to the build ing of the greatest graft-ridden city on the globe. JUSTICE AMONG DOGS In his voyage of polar exploration. Commander Fiala observed among his dogs a sort of government quite inde pendent of that of their keepers. They were of the Eskimo variety and were trained to work in teams. In their gen eral conduct, however, they acted as a community, and their rules had re ference to the common good. There was no penalty less than that of death. During the period of darkness we lost eight dogs; three of them, splen did large animals, were killed by their companions. The other five either wandered off on the young Ice and were blown away, or were killed by the pack at a distance from camf Every dog was known by name. It is a curious fact that when one dog has antagonized the others, the only way to save him from destruc tion later on is to chain him: then the other drTgs let him alone. Unfortun ately for us, the dogs that seemed to incur the enmity of their' fellows were the large, strong animals the bullies and fighters. There seemed to be a degree of Jus tice in their judgments. From close observation I found that the dogs gen erally forgave a bite on the head or body, but that an attack on the legs seemed to be considered foul play, and must be paid for by the life of the of rending canine. The whole pack united In his .execution. Youth's Companion. A MAN. I like the man who faces what he must. With step triumphant and a heart of cheer; Who fights the daily battle without fear; Sees his hoes fail, yet keeps unfalter ing trust That God Is God; that somehow, true and just. His plans work out for mortals; not a tear Is shed when fortune, which the world holds dear. Falls from his grasp; better, with love, a crust Than living In dishonor, envies not. Nor loses faith in man; but does his best. Nor ever murmurs at his humbler lot. But, with a smile and words of hope, gives zest To every toiler; he alone is great Who by a life heroic conquers fate. Sarah K. Bolton In Universallst Leader. o CHINA AND THE MOON. China has abandoned officially one of its oldest superstitious observances. The Pekin astronomical board present ed a memorial to the prince reporting a forthcoming eclipse of the moon and recommending the performance of the usual ceremonies. The memorial was rejected. On the occasion of eclipses of the sun or moon it has for cen turies been customary in China for ev erybody, down to the meanest subject, to let off firecrackers and cause gongs to be beaten for frightening off the monster which Is supposed to be swal lowing the luminary, and for every mandarin holding office to burn can dles and incense and prostrate him self before the darkening orb. o RACE SUICIDE DEFEATED AGAIN. The Massachusetts Democrats had a choice between John T. Coughlin and James Vahey for head of their state ticket. Mr. Coughlin modestly admit ted that he had been mayor of the largest spindle city in the state, ex ecutive head of gn million dollars of capital, that he had mediated between labor and capital, and believed he could get twenty thousand independent Re publican votes. James Vahey deposed and said that he also had some assets, namely, a w ife and six children, whereas his op ponent was a bachelor. The nomina tion went to Vahey, and the platform demanded lower tariffs on the neces saries of life. Minneapolis Journal. SCARED BY THE M. D. The Doctor Nonsense! You haven't got a cancer.
