Jon Harden pastor of the con gregational church plans to leave Tem pe within the next few days having I.reached his last sermon last Sunday morning. Mr. Harden came here from Jerome about four years ago in ac ceptance of the position offered him by the Congregational church and has bt-en here vver since only having had but one or two summer vacations, con sequently his many Tempe frivnds will bo sorry to see him leave here. Rev. Hardens' plans for the pret-ont are rather indefinite but he expects to sfiend a few weeks visiting his daugh ter in Jerome leaving here the middle of the week. EXAMINATION FOR POSTOFFIGE CLERKS Postmaster Newell Has Instructions Governing Civil Service Ex amination to Be Held In Mesa. Here is a chance for ambitious youns men and youiiK ladies who de sire to qiulify as clerks in the postal service. Postmaster Newell .has re ceived instructions from the depart ment that an examination for clerks will be held under the civil service rules at Mesa on the 7th day of March. 1912. The official notice reads: "Civil Service Examination Postoffice Clerk. "An open competitive examination for clerk will be held at the postoffice. Mesa, Arizona, March 7. 1912. Appli cation blanks will be supplied upon application to the postmaster." The tests to which the applicants will be subjected are indicated as follows: Spelling, twenty words; arithmetic, simple tests; letter writinR, not less than 100 words; penmanship; copying, from plain copy; reading addresses. Instead of having the examination take place in the postoffice, the post master intends to Ret the use of the Commercial club rooms for that day, where the applicants will have a better chance to show what they can do. Xo doubt there will be several applicants and, naturally, the ones show ins the greatest decree of pro ficiency will have the preference. One of the teams hauling machin ery to Roosevelt for the extension of power facilities lost a wheel when near Government Wall, Monday even ing, and was held up until the driver could return to Mesi for repairs. That ques tion may be hard to answer, but there are many people qualified to tell who "raised the devil." Miss Letha Clark returned to Phoe nix yesterday afternoon, after a couple of weeks' visit with her cousin. Coleman House Destroyed by Fire When Children Were at Home Alone. The residence of John Coleman who lives east of the mill, was destroyed by fire at an early hour bust evening, the youngest child being rescued only by the timely ctforts of Harry Smith, who chanced to be irrigating near by. Mr. and Mrs. Coleman had gone up town to a show, leaving their five children at home alone, one or them a very little child. When the fire bToko out the elder children did all they could but the little one would doubtless have perished had it not been for the assistance of Mr. Smith, who arrived at the burning building none too soon. GLENDALE, Feb. 13. Mr. Louis Raswitz of Phoenix is a Glemlale visi tor today. Several persons were brought before Judge Hawks' court this morning. Trials will be held Saturday Feb. 1.
