He had just heard fropi the foreman in charge at the Buffalo Arizona mine and had received samp les of ore recently taken out. A new ledge had been encountered, carrying "free gold. The samples had been tak en at different times. The first show ed the ledge to be an inch wide and the second, the result of a. shot at a depth of two feet had shown it to lie more than two inches wide with more square gold to the same area of surface. This development is one predicted by A. J. Porterie several years ago after a ten days examina tion of the property when there was at the offices of p. K. Hickey in the Fleming block. Back in South Dakota he is a prominent rancher and stock grower and president of the American National Bank of Spearfish. o I AMUSEMENTS . ELKS THEATRE The Forman Stock company is pret ty busy these days getting ready for the opening in this city on Thursday right in Alias Jimmy Valentine, which is one of the finest and best plays that has been written in late years and one which never before has been played at these prices. The play is in four acts and interest grows itn every fall of the curtain until the end. The opening is the war den's office of the famous Sing Sing prison in New York, and here we make our first accquaintance with Jimmy Valentine when he is brought out be fore visitors to show his ability to open safes by the sense of touch only. Through the efforts of these same vis itors Jimmy secures a pardon and with their help is making good in the world of business only to be ferreted out and run down by one of his old enemies, a detective who has worked out a crooked deal to railroad him back to prison. The third act is a scene between Jim mie and the detective and to tell the result here would be to spoil the in terest in the play, so that will be left until Thursday night. Quite naturally Jimmy falls in love with his benefact ress and this touch of -sentiment gives it that finish which makes it a story true to life and full of human inter est. The principal parts will be played by such well known artists as Louis Mor rison, Tom Forman, Vivian Rich, Hal lie Mitchell, Violet Neitz, Frank But tolph.' Many people will be glad to hear that Wm. Brunton, who was one of the favorites with the World's Fair Stock Co. when they played here a j eat: ago is also with this company. People wishing to reserve seats in advance may do so by calling or phon ing A. L. Boehmer's Pharmacy on the corner of Central and Washington streets. The Empress. All the women in Phoenix should remember that this is the date ad vertised for the matinee at the Em press, at 2::jo o'clock, for women only. The feature of it will be the comedy mind reading act of the Les 1'rimini company, who till the past, present and future of everybody who asks, just as easy as though they had been responsible in mapping out human life fro mtlie beginning. Xo lady is ashamed of bvr present but some may not like to have the past extolled too fully, or the future dis counted to their embarrassment Husbands and eligible are therefore barred from this entertainment. The show- went off smoothly last night, not only with the mind reading bill the singing and talking comedy of Steadman and Richards. Mart.' illus trated song and the moving pictuivs. The regular matines will also be held on Saturday and Thursday night there will be a change of program. The Coliseum. Coliseum was peeked to ca last night and the new bill The paeil y strong in comedy. Early and Daight made a big hit, being specially sn ng in comedy. Early and Daighl pair of unusually hu ge cooing who do their love making in are a doves the old T'ashioned Way by pointing' out each othe r's weaknesses each try ing to reform thv other by adopting all his bad habits. When Lovey gets juiced and finds a doctor's pre scription necessitating the darkening ol the windows and an all day sleep, Iiovev has a similar exirrience. Through it all there is a whirlwind ol' joking- and fun making. Then comes Wall and the the little skit "She' to lie a great laugh Kid. presenting which proves producer. Wall is secreted in tlli audience at the beginning and is finally coaxed to the stage by a dainty dams-el who sings and dances most engagingly until the young man finally ask for a ki-s. 1 tin height of con tempt sl.e pulls off her curls and exhibits herself -as a handsome faced hoc. Black Suede with Cravanette top. imported Tan Calf Skin, White Nuliuck. H. A. Oielil Shoe Co. sin- doe-s the young man. This act also bristles with comedy as do some of the moving pictures, one in par ticular where an old maid runs down and marries a cowboy who si rays into the c ast. Glen He nry sings a new song and altogether the program is a winner. Good Plays, Maybe? Harry Mack, general representative for the Fnited Play company, is in the city arranging for the appearance here at the Elks' theater for New Year's performances of Hugo B.Koch in Clyde Fitch's remarkable play, "The City." Mr. Mack announces that a number of this firm's attrac tions arc coming west and that then is an excellent possibility of this city being included in the routes. The name of the United Play com pany stands for some of the biggest dramatic successes of the period, no tably Sarah Padden in "Kindling," "The Lion and the Mouse," "The Third Degree," "Graustark" and "Truxton King." This is the- most important list of attractions trolled by any firm outside con New York City and the high standard of casts and productions has given the Fnited Play company a high rating with theater managers and patrons. While there has been some com plaint of poor business in the larg er centers of population Mr. Mack says that in the west all attractions of merit are doing well. Mr. Koch is having the most successful tour of his career. Many of his audiences have been of the capacity order and more than one theater has dusted off the "standing room only" sign for his appearance. In fact Mr. Mack states that since leaving the Missis sippi river "The City" has not had a single night's business which could be described as small. CHOP HOUSE Open Day and Night.
