COMMITTED TO THE ASYLUM
Thomas J. Treadwill, a miner, who has
been a resident of Arizona since 1-70
was committed to the state asvlnni for
the insane yesterday. The man has an
idea that he has been hypnotized and
claims to have shot the man who
placed him under the spell and buried
the hod v. He says that he has lost all
knowledge of the whereabouts of the
grave and that fact is driving him in
sane.
FEDERAL COURT SESSION
Enited States Judge W. II. Sawtelle
will arrive in the city this morning ac
companied by Allan D. Jaynes, late
clerk of the court and G. W. Lewis of
Tucson whose appointment to the
clerkship was lately announced by
Judge Sawtelle. A session of the court
will be helil tomorrow.
PHOENIX LOOKS BEST AFTER

HEALER TO ANSWER Dr. Alberto
Diaz Vizcarro, who was arrested in
Tempe for practicing medicine with
out a license, was given a hearing be
fore Judge Johnstone yesterday and
was held to answer to me superior
court in the sum of $100. Vizcarra
said that all lie was guilty of, was aid
ing his fellow man and denied receiv
ing money for his services. Witnesses,
however, proved the contrary ami gave
evidence as to the amount paid for his
professional services and the dates.
MASHER FINED Henry Dixon,
who went out of his way to insult two
young girls, was given a hearing be
fore Judge Johnstone yesterday and
found guilty of the charge. And it was
his first offense and he promised to
behave , better in the future he was
allowed to go after paying a fine of
$15. Judge Johnstone is determined to
put down street mashers and anyone
who is brought before him on a simi
lar charge will receive a much stiffer
sentence and will probably be given a
rest in the Chateau d'Marieopa for an
extended period.

Police Moore has been requested to
learn the whereabouts of Kd Stone,
whose mother is ill at Perth, Kansas.
He is said to be something of a horse

Cangoro in police court yesterday af
ternoon was given thirty days on a
charge preferred by the father of a lit
tle girl. It is said that Cangoro offered
insults to four or five little girls, none
of whom were more than six or seven
years old.
U. S. GAUGER RETURNS George
Kirkland, Enited States ganger for
this district, returned yesterday morn
ing from a two weeks' trip to the
Pacific coast spent with his mother
and sister. Kirkland put on consider
able weight while absent from these
parts.

cobs, one this city's enterprising real
estate operators returned yesterday
from a week's motoring in the north
ern part of the state. Jacobs re
ports unusual good luck. Ho drove

TYPOGRAPHICAL ERROR
Through a typographical error the
notice of the proposed sale of stray
bievoles in the hands or Chief of Police
Moore at the city hall was made to read
August 2S. The sale actually is to be
held on Friday morning. August 20, at
lu:p,o o'clock at the rear of the city
hall building. An opportunity will be
afforded for securing several good
wheels at reasonable figures.
BAND CONCERT At the request
of the merchants the Pioneer Band will
give an open air concert on Wednesday
evening on Washington street at Cen
tral avenue. A pleasing program has
been prepared. The Pioneer Band has
not given concerts recently on Sunday
evening in the city hall plaza but it is
expected that these pleasurable aflairs
will be resumed shortly after Septem-

Sunday night and a pa 1 1 of yester
day in Phoenix. He came overland
from Globe for the purpose ot logging
the road between the two cities for
the stage line that is at p:esont mak
ing regular trips to and fro. How
ever while here he did not fail to
put in a number of energetic, boosts
for the Globe route for the Ocean-to-Ocean
highway. Mr. Hogue returned
yesterday afternoon, artivinrf in Globe
in time to attend a mooting of road
boosters there at night. He was
somewhat delayed in getting in ow
ing to engine trouble, but reports
having had a splondi-d ride at that.

aster Visited Frequently

Concerning the untimely death of
Lev. and Airs. Van I er Lass, w ho
went down with the steamship State
i f California, near Juneau. Alaska, on
Sunday, August 17, the Dayton liio
News has the following to say:
"Dayton friends of Mrs. Clara Van
Der Lass, formerly Clara Dismukes,
it-siding at Phoenix, Arizona, but who
has been visiting her aunt. Airs. J.

last several years, will be distressed
to learn that she and her husband
wire drowned Sunday in the disaster
that befell the steamer State of Cali
fornia, off the coast of Alaska.
"A message to this effect was re
ceived Monday afternoon by Airs, l'o
penoe. 'Phe information was also re
ceived that Airs. Van I)er Lass and
her husband were on their honey
moon up along the coast when the
tragedy, in which their lives were

of many splendid qualities and he
had succeeded during the several
months she spent each summer in
Dayton within the last few years."
