Six blocks of Tempe's thoroughfares in the northern part of town are to be eraveled this week. A half dozen teams and wagons were set to work by tne street committee of the common coun cil yesterday morning at hauling gravel from the north side of the river. Yet not alone will these six blocks of road be treated to a coat of gravel, the coun cil also hopes at an early date to con nect the south approach of the new bridge by way of First street and Mill avenue with a string of electric lights, thus making a lighted thoroughfare from one extremity of the city limits to the other. The play is funny from start to finish, to some , who have witnessed the rehearsals it has apeared to be even more than this. At all events, they predict a big hit when the production is made. The var ious athletic teams in their work on the stage are improving with every re hearsal so that while they are in some respects new to the stage work they will have the at home feeling with their field togs on. THOMAS ROSS, Secretary. MESA j Mr. Gibbons at Everybody's Drug j store will care for subscriptions, j advertising, and news of the j Mesa department. Phone 291 and j I 22 R. I MESA'S CONTRIBUTION 10 THE NEWS OF THE OAY THE INDIAN AS AN ASSET. There was a time on the frontier when the only use the whites had for. an Indian was to swap him colored cloth and a few trinkets for his pro ducts, at an enormous profit to the aforesaid whites, but the present day Indian is not of that calebra. He is as wise as the salesman with whom he trades and when he is not treated right he is well aware of the fact and takes his trade elsewhere. Mesa is sur rounded by a large Indian population, hundreds of whom are now picking our cotton, or bringing their own staple here for market, this means a large and increasing trade for the merchants of Mesa provided we treat these people as we would anyone else. It is said that certain Indians have been forced to buy things that they did not want here, before the merchant would cash their checks, this is causing trade to be taken from our city to other towns where they can cash their checks without be ing forced to buy anything. This would be unwise if followed by all of our business men. The cotton industry is in its infancy, to do anything now that would tend to check its production or restrict its trade would be like killing the goose that laid the golden eggs. The Indian trade at Mesa can be made a big asset, as they become more and more familiar with the cotton industry and the natives should be encouraged to go more and more into the busi ness instead of being held in check. The same thing applies to the new comers who are coming into our country to rent land and plant the fleecy staple. These men with their families will need help, and for a while will be at a dis advantage financially, and the mer chant or town that is broad enough to treat these people right and not take advantage of either their ignorance or their poverty will be the ones that in the long run will win out arid prosper. If an Indian brings his cotton to this market, he should be paid in checks that he can get the cash on at any bank, and should not be made to buy a dollars worth of anything that he does not want. This is not only just but it is good business. WILL SELL HOT DRINKS. The Crescent Drug store has just in stalled a new hot drink department and from now on, during the cool weather will dispense hot chocolate and other similar drinks. A NEW BUSINESS IN MESA. Jim Wann, the popular peanut man, has branched out into other lines and, will now furnish the hungry traveler with an extra quality of hot tomales. Jim is some rustler for a one arm man. He came to Mesa several weeks ago with a homemade popcorn outfit and has since then monopolized the popcorn and peanut business, and now seeks to put the festive hombre with the "hotto mollys" in the background by monop olizing that business also. Jim is sure some rustler. SUNDAYED IN GILBERT. Miss Edith Mortensen spent Saturday night and Sunday, visiting friends in Gilbert. HAD BUSINESS IN PHOENIX. L. W. Stillwell of the Salt River Hank was in Phoenix yesterday after noon on a matter of business. CONVALESCING. The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stewert of Higley, is reported convalescing from an attack of measles. RETURN FROM VACATION. Mrs. L. V. Drews and her mother Mrs. Anna Ross have returned from a visit to their old home in Kansas, Mrs. Ross will spend the winter in Mesa. HAD HARD LUCK. Mr. W. H. Wallace and sons John and Jim were at Blue Point Saturday night but report that the game in that section was very limited and that the fish could not be induced to leave their J pleasant winter quarters, so they re turned empty handed. VISITING FRIENDS. Misses Annie and Nellie Webster of Cleveland, Ohio, are visiting their friend, Mrs. Max J. Ritterrath for the winter. BROTHER IS BETTER. W. N. Amos who left here last wpck i for Clifton, on account of the illness nf his brother, has written that he found ! mm better and every hope is now had for his immediate recovery. HERE FROM HIGLEY.
