Phoenix How It Is Done
One of the most interesting exhibi
tions that has been i veil in Phoenix
r'r a long time will undoubtedly be
that of Cleo and J. M. Ridgely, show
ing "How Moving Pictures Are
Made," at the Flits' theater on Wed
nesday night. The performers who
are to stage this for the benefit of
the theater going public and moving
picture fans of this city are. well
known to every one that lias ever
witnessed the Kalem, Lubin or Rex
films in the past three years. Cleo
Ridgely was, long known as one of
the most talented and most beautiful
moving picture actresses in the
country.
She and Mr. Ridgely. who also has
played for many of the largest com
panies in the country and is equally
well known, are traveling through
the country on a wager and in stop
ping in Phoenix decided to show
Phoenicians how moving picture.", are
made. In this they will stage an act
for the movies, and then drop the
screen before the audience and run
the pictures which have just been
stageu, off on the screen. The dif
ference between the actual acting and
the moving picture will then be seen.
Five reels of films, in which Cleo
Ridgely acted prior to starting on the
present trip, will be shown. These
sire Rex films of great power ' and
beauty. One is "Beauty and the
Beast," and the others are "The Lash
of Fate," "Saints and Sinners,"
Greater Love" and "A Japanese Ideal.'
The pictures alone are worth the time
spent in at the theater, to say noth
ing of the educational feature of the
lest of the xerogram.
One of the 20-year-old western
brones upon which Cleo Ridgely has
ridden in many a picture and which
has carried her from New York here
in the last fourteen months, will also
take a part in the performance.

STOCKMAN FARMER SPECIAL

Farmer is leaving this morning to
boost the second annual demonstra
tion train for the University of Ari
zona. This train will leave over the
Santa Fe lines November 12, return
ing to - Phoenix about November 25,
and making the trip over the South
ern Pacific and Arizona Eastern lines
about December 1. . Mr. Bemis will
visit Prescott, Williams, Flagstaff and
the towns along tb Santa Fe, inter
esting the business men of each town
in getting the farmers to visit the
train, and learn bv object lesson the
wonderful agricultural resources of
the state.

WILSON URGES CLAYTON

gether, which is the least troublesome,
and also the least creditable course.
This is the one which he apparently has
elected to follow.
The president's call upon Mr. 'Clay
ton does not take the form of a direct
request to keep out of the senatorial
race in Alabama. He follows the more
seductive, though no less significant,
line of asking Mr. Clayton to stay in
the house. And he bases this reqviest
upon the proposition that Mr. Clayton
as chairman of the judiciary committee
will be a power hereafter in handling
the legislative program on trusts and
corporations, which the president inti
mates will shortly come before con
gress. This presents two interesting sug
gestions. The president has heretofore
intimated that he had no legislative
program in mind on the corporation
and trust question, and in fact all the
indications since this administration
came into power have been that there
was no crystallization of belief or pol
icy among the democratic leaders on
this important problem. In fact, six or
seven different possibilities of solution
have come at one time or another from
administration sources, each in its turn
permitted to drop out of sight when
brief trial showed that it failed to
achieve popular support.
Now for the first time the presi
dent intimates in fact he practically
promises that he will have a legisla
tive program on this question. The

down to date has continually professed
progressive principles and intentions.
It is true that he has not lived up to
these professions in numerous partic
ulars, especially in his appointments to
office. For he has been industriously
building up a machine throughout the
country by the appointment of machine
politicians to office and he has done
nothing to check the general democratic
assault upon the civil service. His ac
tions have supported that assmilt while
his silence has not cendemned it.
Now he proposes to retain Mr. Clay
ton at the head of the judiciary com
mittee in the house for the purpose of
handling his important trust legislation.
Mr. Clayton is one of the most conspi
cuous and well-known reactionaries in
the house of represetatives. -He is a
states' righter of the before-the-war
school of democrats. His views of the
power of congress and the national
government to deal with the mattfrs
involved in a correct solution of the
trust problem will put him almost di
rectly athwart any legislative proposi
tion which will offer real hope of suc
