It was the culmination of a feud that pxi.sted between the Stewarts tv, rvumibpHs for many years, even to this day the bitterness has not subsided that was started by the murder of Colin Cambell iV Glenure. Whether or not James Stewart was guilty has always remained a mys tery, but at any rate he was compeueu to pay the penalty on the scaffold. The "gibbet was erected near the present Scottish town of Ballachulish Kerry, and Stewart died on Novem ber 8, 1752. Colin Campbell had been murdered on the afternoon of May 14 of the same year. As before noted the elans Stewart and Campbell were at enmity, al though the two clans had frequently intermarried. In fact James Stewart and the murdered man were blood i.,.4,rQC Thv hart been friends in ,v,st rhivs in suite of clan rivalries Campbell was a wealthy land owner, anri .Tames was one of his tenants i.nrt ir..,kprt after the paying of the rent of other tenants. trinuiiv however, their relations be -am strained becuuse Campbell in sisted on securing his delinquent rents and reproached Stewart as be ing too lenient witn tne tenants. The npnhpw turned to seek the as sailant, but he had disappeared over t a hill in the distance. He starteu in pursuit, but lost track of him. Another of the party was quickly sent on ahead to secure assistance, while one of them guarded the body. About twelve persons were arrested on suspicion, including Campoeu anu. Allan Breck. James Stewart ana nis son. Allan, were taken to Fort Wil liam on the 16th of May. Mrs. Stewart made every effort to secure an interview witn ner nusuanu, out she only succeeded toward the end of June. At last, on the 6th of July, about seven weeks after his arrest, the monotony of the prisoner's loneliness was broken by the receipt, ior tne first time, of a warrant dated May 17th, authorizing his incarceration. Thereupon he secured an Edinburg lawyer, Mr. Stewart, of Edinglassie, m T.rpnare his defense. Tile trial was fixed to take place at Inveraray ho !it of Seotember. 1752. bench was occupied by three judges thn ni.lcp of Argyll. Lord Elchies and Lord Kilkerran.- The counsel for the prosecution were the Lord Ad vocate, William Grant, who had been chief law officer of the Crown dur ing the strenuous days that followed Cullodon; James Erskine, sheriff of of Perth; Robert Campbell,, of As nich; John Campbell, and Simon Many witnesses were examined.
