AUTO TRUCKS VS WOODEN CULVERTS it the ooinion of Road Supervi sor Hugh Dana that the old time wooden culvert is a form ot roao way building that sewed an ideal purpose during its time but mat with the coming of tr.e automoune anri its heavv loads that it is no longer able to cope with the im mense increase in traffic that daily passes along the Salt River Valley highways. The past week has been one of constant calls for repair work to the wooden structures. in Leui , i nn extraordinary lot of damage but that was caused by a traction engine pulling a tn-.esmns machine. It is said by the supervi sor that one engine broke through -nrrtnHeM CUlVCriS. nw"r,t, while the threshing engine usea to he the ereat cause for woouen i in vert trouble it is no more. The new style steel cuiveris ui are being placed in on practically all roadways are proving very satisfac tory and are an important factor in the good roads movement. The town of Mesa has not reached that stage of putting in the steel culverts but it is presumed that m the near iu ture that the new style of road build ing will be followed out with in the city vather than try to continue with the old time wooden culvert that re- tiuired repairs frequently. SUNDAY'S GAME If the game Sunday is not a suc cess then whose fault will it be? Surely not P. J. Langowski's. His he not labored long and earnestly to whip his aggregation into shape and get them lined up for the fray. Yes, Lefty Harris has gone. He got a wire from iSanta Rita, New Mexico, and when he opened the envelope enough change dropped to the floor to buy a ticket to the town and an offer of $175 per month also. He took the message and the money and layed them all before Langow ski and says to the Mesa manager, "Jobbie that there offer looks purty good to me." Mr. Langowski thought over the matter a few moments and he could arrive at but one conclu sion and that was that it was cer tainly a good offer. He told Harris in so many words. But alll such does not have much to do with the game Sunday. Mc Gowan will pitch. Tempe is going to bring the band and there is going to be one large crowd come from the city by the double buttees. The Mesa lineup will be as follows; Brown, second base; Morris, catcher; Core, short stop; Pomerov. center field; Bond, first base; Wil liams, left field; Halvorson, third base; Campbell, right field; McGow an, pitcher.
