Charles I was perhaps the great est example of this, but just as dra matic and interesting is the meteor l'.ke rise and fall of Cromwell. Not the Cromwell who made the brief period of republican sway in Eng land a brilliant success, but the Cromwell who went around England dispelling and wrecking the churches to gain the favor of Henry VIII. The same Cromwell who is told by Car dinal Wolxey, in Shakespeare's "Henry VIII," briefly but decisively to "Put away ambition." Starting his career as the son of a blacksmith, Thomas Cromwell rose quickly until in one week he was first made Karl of Essex, and then Great Chamberlain of England. But this same man, a short time later, was in a cell in the Tower writing to the king, not with the bold arro gence that had always been his, but sending the craven message 'Mercy! Mercy! Mercy!" Although he had been making great headway with the king, with each additional appointment, the no bies were more and more jealous. On June 9, 1540, Parliament was still sitting discussing the religious question with a view to the settle ment of some uniform doctrine. The Lords of the Council left the Cham ber to go across to Whitehall to din ner before mid day; and as they wended their way across the g.eat courtyard to Westminster, a. high wind carried away Cromwell's flat c.up from his head. It was then the custom when one gentleman was even accidently uncovered for those who were with him also to doff their "bonnets." But, as an attend ant ran and recovered Cromwell's flying headgear on that occasion, the haughty minister looked around and saw all his colleagues, once so hum ble, hohling their own hats upon their heads. "A high wind indeed this must be," sneered Cromwall, "to blow my cap off and for you to need to hold yours on." When returning to the Council Chamber the Duke of Norfolk stop ped him and told him that it was not meet that traitors should sit amongst loyal gentlemen. "I am no traitor" shouted Crom well, dashing his cap upon the ground; but the captain of the guard was at the door, and still protesting the wretched man was hurried to the Water Gate and rowed swiftly to the Tower. Norfolk, as he left the Coun cil chamber, tearing off the fallen minister's badge of the Garter as a last stroke of ignominy. Cromwell knew he was doomed for by the iniquitous act that he himself had forged for the ruin of others he might be attained and con demned legally without his own presence or defense. "Mercy,! Mercy! Me.'cy!" he wrote to the king in his agony; but for him there was as lit tle mercy as he had shown to oth ers. His death was a foregone con clusion, for Henry's fears had been aroused; but Cromwell had to kept alive long enough for him to furnish such information as would provide f rij-yui.r-r.'.'.r.- n ' " " Home of Quality Pictures TONIGHT "SAVED BY THE HEAD HUNTERS" Four Reels. 10c. The king was already tired of his queen and sorely -wanted, the. mar riage annulled, which, as the mar riage was of his own making, Crom well opposed. Cromwell afterwards swore that he knew the marriage had never been consummated, and never would be. When all this was sworn to, Cromwell's hold upon the world was done. Upon evidence now un known, he was condemned for treas on and heresy without being heard in his own defense, and on the 28th of July; 1540. he stood, a sor.-y fi gure, upon the scaffold of the Tow er. Cromwell confessed he had been a sinner, and had travailed after things of this world; but he fev erently avowed he was a good Cath olic and no heretic, and had harbor ed no thoughts of evil towards his sovereign. But. all his protestations availed nothing; and his head, the cleverest head in England, was pitia bly hacked off by a bungling headsman. A campaign in favor of a constitutional amendment will be shortly instituted. This, like all other important ques tions has two sides, on each of which are found honest and intelligent per sons. The Republican has decided to pro vide for a reasonable discussion of this issue in its pages, allowing to each side at least a half column daily for signed articles, for which there will be no charge. Xo anonymous article will be published. It is only stipulated that the com munications for and against prohibi tion be Just and fair and that in no case shall there be any wild and ex travagant statement that will in any way reflect upon the reputation of Phoenix for good order. It is suggested by The Republican that either side, desiring to avail it self of this offer of space, name a committee through which all matter relating to the issue shall be trans mitted. In such case, all communica tions received nt this office from other sources will be rejected. We believe that this arrangement is ne cessary to keep the discussion within reasonable lines. No paid advertisements from either side will be accepted. THE CALAMITY HOWLER There is one man who is more dangerous than the anarchist. He is the calamity howler. The man who pretends to think that the adoption of the statewide dry amendment would bring disaster is a mental defective who should be restrained. He has no right to run at large. There can be no permanent harm from getting over a debauch: the harm comes in accumulating the jag. To the calamity howler the propo sition that sober men are wortij more to a community than drunkards comes as a distinct shock. The idea that drinking poison is injurious seems to him the very es sence of absurdity. The theory that wasting money for lio.uor is a bad policy seems to him to be too ridiculous to be entertained. A business that impoverishes the most the man who pursues it tiie most arduously is regarded by the calamity howler as an economic blessing. He pretends to think that the, more money a community wastes the rich er it becomes. He pretends to think that waste makes business and that a nation can build itself by destroying the materials from which it is made. He pretends to think that the more money there is spent for liquor the more its .victims spend for clothes and food and shelter. The calamity howler tries to make you believe that it would ruin the state to stop an. economic leak, to turn off the spigot of waste. Ha pretends to think that a sober I and efficient people endangers pros perity and that a man becomes the most solvent just when he is the nearest broke. Every calamity howler gets his in spiiation from a keg of beer. His economics comes from the man with a white apron. Maine, sober, was able to put more money in the bank for its population than any other state in the union. Kansas, sober, has accumulated more property for its population than any other state in the union. And yet, in the face of these facts, the calamity howler is still on the job, shouting the same old falsehood that the worst thing that could happen to Arizona is to sober up and take the cure. The facts ate that the best thing that could happen to Arizona is to rid herself of the poisons that have accumulated in her social system. She must eliminate the crime, the insanity, tho pauperism, the waste, the awful cost of the liquor curse. It is not going to hurt her to stand erect. She is not going to go broke by uaving her money. She is not going to suffer because she puts her whiskey money into bet ter clothes and better food and bet ter homes. Making more legitimate business and destroying Illegitimate business never injured a Rtate, community nor an Individual in the entire history of the human race. Moreover, it never will.
