In spite of departmental indiffer
ence. Representative Carl Hayden be
lieves it is possible to get through a
bill calling for a survey of the pro
posed Colorado river Indian irriga
tion project. A bill already has been
introduced, simultaneously .in the
house and senate, providing '. for a
survey and appropriating $100,000 for
it.
Plans already suggested for the
improvement of the Colorado river
with a diversion dam near Headgate
Rock, Parker, Arizona, have been
turned down as impracticable by
the department of the interior, on the
ground that there is not enough ac
curate data on hand to induce pri -vate
capital or public enterprise to
unde-.-take the work. The failure of
many Carey act projects, the im
poverishing of the settlers and the
ruin of the promoters is pointed out.
It is said it would not be fair to
open the Indian lands in their pres
ent arid condition, nor under any
reclamation plan . unless there is a
reasonable assurance that water
could be made available for the ir
rigation of the lands at a reasonable
cost. . .
Additional borings and other In
vestigations of the site will be ne
cessary before any definite plans can
be made. Furthermore, there are
no surveys for irrigation canals or
structures Incident to proper irriga
tion of the lands on the reservation.
Still, the department backs up the
suggestion of an appropriation of the
hundred thousand for the further
study of the damsite and bottom
lands. In case a fund is secured, the
work will be conducted 'jointly by
the reclamation and Indian services.
Mr. Hayden in a letter to the board
of trade says he believes the bills
will go through at the December ses
sionof congress, when other Indian

Miss Edna Hayes Becomes Bride of
Thomas E. Thorpe
Miss Edna Hayes, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. R. L. Hayes and Thomas
E. Thorpe, secretary of the Arizona
State Pharmaceutical Association,
were married at four o'clock yester
day afternoon at the home of the
bride's parents, 335 East Jefferson
street, Rev. H. L. Jenkins of the
Prescott Episcopal church, read the
impressive service. . .
The house throughout was attract
ively decorated In a green and white
color scheme, expressed in an ; ar
tistic arrangement of pepper boughs,
ferns and roses. Miss Hayes made
a charming bride in an exquisite
gown of white crepe meteor and rare
old lace. She carried an arm bou
quet of roses and ferns. Miss Jen
nie Renaud was bridesmaid and C.
E. Mason acted as best man.
An artistically appointed supper
followed the ceremony, covers being
laid for the relatives and few friends
who were present at the wedding.
Mr. and Mrs. Thorpe will pass their
honeymoon at the Grand Canyon and
be at home in a fortnight at 910 East
Willetta street.
Mrs. Thorpe is a popular member
of the younger set and has been
much feted . since the announcement
of her engagement in the spring.
She is an officer in Purity Temple,
Pythian Sisters. . . - .
Mr. Thorpe is connected with tne
Reeve Drug company and belongs to
Uniform Rank, Knights of Pythias
and is a well-liked member of the
lodge.

tion. He was turned over to the
Millers by the Detroit Tigers last

Henry Newsholme and a codicil
thereto together with his petition
praying that said documents be ad

last will and testament and codicil of
the said George Henry Newsholme
who, said petitioner alleges, is de
ceased, and that letters of administra
tion with said will and codicil issue
thereon to said petitioner, and that
same will be heard on Saturday the
29th day of August' A. D. 1914, at 9:30
o'clock In the forenoon of said day, at
the courtroom of said Court, in the
Court House,, In the City of Phoenix,
County of Maricopa, State of Arlsw'
and all persons interested in said
estate are notified then and there to
appear and show cause, if any they
have, why the prayer of said petitioner
should not be granted.
