Smith, candidate tc succeed himself in the United States senate, . an election which he expects at the hands of the demo crats in the state and all the people in Maricopa county, left hurriedly yesterday morning to fill a speaking engagement in the Mile High City, and in consequence the real estate men, who had gathered several hun dred strong at the New Palace Cafe teria to hear the senator on the irri gation bill that bears his name, ex tending the time of payment of the Roosevelt project to twenty years were disappointed. Instead of Mr. Smith appearing at the dinner yes terday at the noon hour, Vernon L. Clark stated to the gathering that a speaking engagement at Prescott necessitated Mr. Smith's presence there much to the general regret. To all of this there hangs a tale. Proprietor Smith of Ihe Cafeteria met Senator Smith in the lobby of the liotel on the day of his arrival and stated to him there that the real estate men were meeting at his cafteria thenext day (which was yesterday) and that he would he glad if the senator would accept an in vitation to be present and talk upon the twenty year extension hill. Sen ator Smith heartily thanked Mr. Smith for the invitation and stated that he "would be there." That be ing settled, the gathering was well advertised at the expense of the well meaning Mr. Smith. In the meantime some disagree ment had arisen between Proprietor Smith and the Cooks' and" Waiters' union, and a committee representing the union is said to have called on Senator Smith, and warned him if he went down there the unions would oppose him. No notice was sent to Mr; Smith that the senator would not go, but Mr. Clark showed up and explained the fact of the sched ule interfering, a schedule that was made out in the senator's room on the night after the speaking engage ment at the Y. M. C. A. outdoor court The senator will not stay in the north this time but will hurry back to Phoenix this morning so ns to fill his Tempe and Mesa dates before Sunday. o t AMUSEMENTS ?
