Par tial Xmas Calendar for Tempe Christmas offers a ten-day vaca tion to students of the Tempe schools this year, dating from the evening of the 23rd to the first Monday in the new year.' That all are looking forward to the close of school a week from tonight, goes without say ing. Many, especially tne stuaents of the normal, have already formu lated their plans for the vacation period, and wherever possible the out of town students will spend their time with the folks at home. School closes this year at all four of the Tempe institutions on the same date, the evening of the 23rd. It will reopen again on the Monday following New Years, allowing in all ten days for the Christmas holidays. The closing of the grammar schools will be marked with appropriate Christmas exercises. The corps of teachers at both the training and public schools are already busily en gaged with this work. What the calendar for the holidays holds for Tempe people and the out of the valley folks who will spend their vacation here has not been compiled as yet. The Christmas af ternoon program is pretty well under way, however, and baseball enthusi asts of the town promises some kind of a contest, one between the high school or town team, the leans and the fats, or the married and the sin gle. Ads. bn WATER ACCOUNTS DUE But a few days remain for the de linquent patrons of the Tempe wa ter department to settle their ac counts without laying themselves liable to doing without the service for a while. The ordinance rules that service shall be discontinued arter the twentieth of the month, if ac counts are not settled by that time. To date there are quite a few whom the water commissioner will visit about the last of this week if set tlements ase not offered before then. A NORMAL HOP Tempe normal opens its program of social dances this year with a dance next Saturday evening in the gym nasium. At . six o'clock yesterday morning he was removed to tne Kniithsirlo hosnital and an operation for appendicitis performed at 9 a. m. by Drs. Moeur and calmer. LARGE FORCE Superintendent D. P. Jones reports the operation of 133 men and eighty teams of horses on the work of canal cleaning, under the direction of A. J. Haltom, general superintendent of operations and maintenance. The force will be moved today above the power house and will clean from there to Granite Reef. MARRIED AND RETURNED J. C. Steele, who is well known in this section in his capacity as a ce ment worker has returned from j Pittsburg, Ph., with a charming wife. His wife is having the experience of seeing at first hand the great un broken west, and the land of one story buildings. While the conditions seem peculiar, yet she is sure that she will soon be aide to adapt her self to them. ACTIVITIES AT LOCAL DEPOT Mr. Rosenberry has shipped a car of Christmas trees from California to this district for distribution. The government has unloaded many cars of timber and equipment for the con struction work now being performed, and the company has added another encloser at the stock yards 200x200 which admits the handling of 2000 head of cattle with what space they already have enclosed. PIONEER DRUGGIST DIES Dr. John Wood Bailev for tuontv. four years a resident of Arizona ami the greater portion of that time in Mesa, died at his residence Monday. Dr. Bailey was one of the earliest of the local druggists, having conducted business in the building now occupied by the Crescent. He was hiehlv re spected by everyone for his sterling wortn ana attention to detail. He had been under the care of Dr. Drane for some time and everything possible done during his last ill ness. The remains were interred at the Mesa cemetery yesterday after noon. CHANGE IN PRESIDENCY At the general meeting of the mu tual! of the Maricopa Stake Sunday night the resignation of the former president, Mrs. Cassie Pomeroy was accepted and Dr. Pearl Udell wa elected president. The new officer chose practically the same officers as in the ' former work, with the ad dition of Mrs. McCembie of Phoenix. Emily Jones of Lehi and Mrs. Turley of the Alma district as aids.
