ARIZONA THEATRE nmnr'"erfwifwr--r-M-,i" - -"-'---------- A few days more and Balke's Iiig Cu rio Store which has been an institution if Phoenix for more than a quarter of a century and whose fame has spread all over the world, will be no more. The great retirement sale is drawing to a close. On the first of the year it will be no more and the place where it has been established so long will be vacant. But it will last long enough for the Christmas buyers to whom circum stances have made it a godsend this year. Those who do not avail them selves of the opportunities it offers will be the losers and they will miss some thing that will not come again. The Big Curio Store was always a great rendezvous for Christmas buyers. They could get what they wanted there, whatever it- might be, and they kneiv that it was genuine, and that it was worth what they paid for it. Now, they have the assurance that whatever they buy is worth much mofe than the purclia.se price, for in the gfeat retire ment sale everything is being sold at much less than cost, at whatever it will bring, for the goods must be dis posed of. It is impossible to enumerate the articles which are suitable for Christ inas gifts at the Big Curio Store, there are so many of them. But among them may be mentioned the souvenir calen dars, with pictures of Arizona scenes, Indian moccasins of many kinds, artic les of native copper, Indian jewelry and articles of jeyelry made of petrified wood, ostrich plumes and ostrich leather fans. Mexican handmade, sill shawls and hundreds of other things, erpiully appropriate and as good bur gains. The only way to grasp the op portunities at the Big Oirio Store is to call and see them. Jn addition to the Big Brothers' contributing to the Christmas fund, already announced The Itepubliean yesterday received a check for $3 from Mrs. Kate Millett and a con tribution of $1 from A. H. Tebben. A Barrow sent 1 with a note "for some kiddie's Christmas.'' J. R. Por ter sent a check for $5. Through K. P. Conway, a check for $2.50 was re ceived from Dominick Donofrio for the Belgian Relief Fund. Mrs. C. S. Gulhert of 1120 North Second street called at the office to inquire of what help she could be. She would like to be Santa Claus for some poor little boy about seven years old. This Big Brothers' movement has brought out not only money, hut also many encouraging letters and some moving letters. Among them is the following, the name of the family be ing omitted but it will be given to the distributors of Christmas cheer. Phoenix, Dec. 1. To Tha Arizona Republican: I would nike to be a Big Brother but I can't. 1 have been in Phoenix for over a year but have spent the whole time in bed. As a result, I am not very "flush" in money mat There is a family near here with four children that need help in or der to have a happy Christmas. Their name is and they live In a house on Jefferson street two doors from . The father is not well and though his wife works among the neighbors they can bare ly provide for the children. The youngest was out of school for awhile this fall because he had no shoes. While they do not need food, the children will have no toys on Christ mas unless some one of the organi zations in the city will provide them. Their faith in Santa Claus is yet unshaken but their prospect Is not bright. There are three boys, ages six. eleven and thirteen, and a girl of eight. I think the oldest boy com prehends the situation but the other three do not. Is there not some charitable organ ization in the city which believes that children should have toys on Christmas as well as good things to eat. Many people will help pro vide necessities but neglect toys. I believe a child forgets a good dinner quicker than it forgets the absence of toys on Christmas. Please hand this letter and contri bution to some one who will try to help these children. Their wants are small and a few simple toys will bring joy. ELMER H. FLEHR, 1515 East Washington. Mr. FUhr enclosed a sum of money. There is another letter from I. K. Black of Polk street calling atten tion to the dire needs of another family whose address he gives. Pi fin Does He or She Write? A summer ro mance, begun four years ago on tho Maine coast was brought to a bappy climax today at Kvanston, when Miss Charlotte V. Pierce was wedded to Rev. Edward C. Boynton, student pastor at the University of Miehi gan; Miss Pierce and Mr. Boynton, then a Harvard student, had gone to spend the summer at Five islands. Dr. Nehemiah Boynton of Brooklyn, the famous divine and father of the Harvard student, had a summer cot tage on one of the islands there. Miss Pierce accompanied her grand mother, who had also taken a cot tage. But unlike the proverbial summer ' resort friendship, theirs was not forgotten. A second summer at the shore resort resulted in an en gagement, and next summer they will go back to Five islands and have a cottage of their own. The wedding took place at the home of the bride on Hinman ave nue, Evanston. The young preacher took his bride to Ann Arbor, where he holds a pastoral relationship to the students of the University of Michigan. Klynn drew tin the complaint for filing before U. S. Commissioner J. H. Langsfone. Meanwhile, Doyle was driving a team, some place between Safford and Bowie, or in that immediate vi cinity, and the officers were being warned to look out for him.
