members of the G. A. R. will meet at
the armory building at 2:.30 o'clock this
afternoon.
HORRELL TO GLOBE W. A. Hor
rell drove his third and last eight-
cylinder Cadillac to Globe yesterday.
He reports that the Gila metropolis is
the livest town for his new curs he has
yet discovered outside of the capital
city.
MOVIE COMMITTEE Members of
the board of trade's "movie committee"
learned by letter from the secretary
yesterday that Mr. J. J. Sweeney had
succeeded p. o. Gettins as chairman.
Mr. Gettins has to be out of town when
the Lubin troupe lands Friday.
"LAWS OF PROPERTY RIGHTS-
Mrs. E. B. O'Neill will address the
Phoenix Civic League at its regular
meeting in the board of trade rooms
on "Laws Pertaining to Property
Rights." This is the first meeting for
two weeks or since the holidays set
in.
SIX APPLICANTS There were six
applicants for the Job of water users'
representative on the cost review
board, instead of one. as The Republi
can stated yesterday. The other five.
nowever. were made by letter, while
Engineer Jones' was presented in per
son.
I. I. COMMISSION J. P. Orme
learned by wire yesterday that the
meeting of the Interstate Irrigation
commission at Washington had been
postponed indefinitely, it was to haffe
been held on January 11. Mr. Orme is
one of the Arizona delegates. Andrew-
Kimball of Thatcher Is the other.
RAIN RECORD Eleven rainy days
during December made that month a
record breaking one, according to a re
port of the local weather bureau." The
rainfall amounted to 3.0H inches. This
is far above normal. The temperature
was above the average, and the baro
metric pressure considerably below the
usual.
REPORT SHEEP KILLING Word
that parties in the vicinity of Castle
Dome range have been seen with a
young mountain sheep not more than
ten days old and other evidence that
some specimens of this animal have
teen killed recently, reached State
Game Warden Willard yesterday. Dep
uties in Yuma county will be notified
to be on the look-out for the parties
mentioned in connection with the prob
oble killing.
WORKING LECTURE At two
o'clock this afternoon, farmers and
business men of the valley and city will
meet at the Water Users' association
to hear an illustrated lecture on the
work of the "Farm Doctor", by D. W.
Working of the department of agricul
ture. President Orme has called a
meeting of members of the Water Us
ers' association, for the purpose of at
tending the lecture. Mr. Working has
had the committee borrow a stereop
tieon. the hall will be darkened, and
on the curtain will be thrown pictures
showing the improvements in farms,
wrought by the aid of farm advisorsV
MENTAL SCIENCE ANNUAL
MEETING At a meeting of the stock
holders of the Mental Science College
Educational association on Monday af
ternoon at the College building, the
following directors were elected to have
charge of the business for the present
year: George Puntenney, Dr. D. V. De
Saffery, Dr. Daisy DeSaffery, Dr. Min
nie S. S. Stevens, all of Phoenix and
Charles Hollingshead of Camp Verde.
The secretary's report showed a satis
factory balance in the bank, -and that
the College building had been paid for.
A vote of thanks was tendered . the
press of the city for its assistance. The
officers elected are: George Puntenny,
president: Chas. Hollingshead, vice
president: Dr. Minnie A .Stevens, sec
retary and Dr. Daisy DeSaffrey. treas
urer. Class No. 4 for the present year
starts with a large number.

DOCTORS' EXAMINATION The
quarterly examination of applicantsfor
physicoans' certificates, which began
at the state house yesterday, will con
tinue today. Only seven candidates are
taking the examination.

PISHONS ARRIVE Mr. and Mrs.
Charles K. Pishon, whose marriage in
Los Angeles last week was received
with gratilied surprise by the many
friends of the groom here, arrived here
yesterdiy morning. Mr. Pishon will
make a home here.
IN SUPREME COURT The action
brought by H. W. Rouudtree against
T. N. Clanton to secure payment of
a promisory note of $468.7.1 was filed
in the supreme court yesterday os
appeal from Maricopa county The
lower court rendered judgement in
favor of the defendant
TAX CONFERENCE REPORT
The complete official report of the
annual tax conference held at Pres
cott last July is now off the press.
The report fills a volume of 19.7
pages. A number of copies will be
forwarded to the boards of supervi
sors of each county for distribution.
CHARITY BALL TONIGHT St.
Luke's charity ball will take place at
the Woman's club this evening. . For
many weeks prominent society mat
rons have been working indefatigably
to make the affair the unprecedented
social event, it gives promise of being.

SOUVENIR OF THE CANYON
Gov. Hunt was yesterday made the re
cipient of a handsome watercolor
sketch of one of the most impressive
scenes along the Grand Canyon. The
picture came to the governor with the
compliments of L. Megargee, the artist
who painted the large Arizona scenes
for the state house corridars.

POLICE ON THE LOOKOUT-Num-
erous complaints have been made to
the police lately about the depredations
of small boys who steal appliances
from standing automobiles. Usually
they unscrew and carry away light
bulbs and disconnect lighting wires.
Sometimes they raid tool boxes. ' The
police are busy looking for such of
fenders for whom homes in the reform
school are waiting.
..INSTRUCTIONS TO SUPERVIS
ORS The annual instructions to the
clerks of the boards of supervisors in
the various counties were sent out by
the state tax commission yesterday.
There are various slight changes in the
orders sent out last year, the most
noteworthy being the change in classi
fication of range cattle. Under the new
classification this item i divided into
five classes: cows, yearlng steers, steer
of two years or over, heifers and calves
of six months or over.

NEW: YORK. Jan. 5 The New
York Athletic club, one of the -leading
amateur organizations of the
country, caused a sensation in local
athletic circles by announcing to
night it would withdraw from the
Amateur' Athletie I'nion as a result
of the Union's action in suspending
six of the club's members for re
fusing to compete in a swimming
contest at the Sportsmen's show in
Madison Square garden.

short cpntracts and European selling.

stock market. Further settlement by
bears soon disclosed scarcity of stocks
and foreign offerings, chiefly of Unit
ed States Steel, were luirdy large
enough 'to affect that issue nor any
of the other leaders most of which
closed under their best prices but
with a firm undertone. In addition to
the active group of numerous spe
cialties. Including American Can com
mon, preferred; American Cotton Oil,
International Harvester, American
Woolen and Pullman Car rose from
two to four points. The movement
is now all one way, however, several
high priced, as well as low- priced
stocks sinking to now minimum prices.
Among these were Louisville and
Nashville, Atlantic Coast Line, Na
tional Railways of Mexico, first pre
ferred, Western Maryland, preferred,
and Rumeley preferred. The fall of
some of these stocks ranged from six
to fifteen points under previous quo
tations. The destination of $3,000,000
in gold bars taken from the assay of
fice yesterday remained a mystery.
New financing by the St. Paul road
again came under discussion but no
details concerning a reported bond is
sue were available.

WASHINGTON. Jan. 5 Gov. Coe-
thals of Panama Canal zone told the
house appropriation sub-committee on
fortifications that the canal is amply
equipped with guns equal to those of
foreign war ships and could not be
outranged. He said he did not be
lieve the government would be just
ified in installing larger ones, but
that it was necessary to provide for
duplications.

FEDERAL INTERVENTION.
'WASHINGTON. Jan. 5 Federal in
tervention in the eastern Ohio coal
strike in progress since April was
ordered by Secretary of l,abor Wil
son at the request of the Wheeling
board of trade. Daniel J. Keefe, la
bor expert, and Hywel Davies. coal
operator and former mediator of the
Colorado strike were designated to
undertake an amicable adjustment.

at this meeting.
A New Years' dance was given Fri
day evening at the Faucet ranch by
James PalmgueM. Lee Binch, Alfred
Champie and John Kletch Of Tempe.
A large number of young people were
invited and a most enjoyable evening
was spent by all.
A good attendance was present at
Sunday school last Sunday when the
annual electicn of officers took -place.
