Doyle brothers, water and sewer con struction contractors, will commence laying the new sewer system for Tempe and the work will be pushed as rapidly as possible to completion, owing to the great amount of work to be done and to the further fact that only a certain amount of ditches can be dug a day, it will probably take about five or six months to complete the work. During the time a'largo number of hands will be em ployed in hand digging, laying pipe, and working on the machines of the construction gang. The plans drawn and mapped out by City Engineer L. ti. Knipe rail for as complete and up-to-date a sewer system as can be found any where in the southwest. There will be about eight and one-half miles of sewer: part of which will run through tIK center of the streets and p:rt. through the alleys of the town. Wherever possible piping will be run through the alleys to prevent tearing up the city streets, (in account of the straightened financial condition throughout the country, some months passed after voting a bond issue for the purpose, before a market for the bonds could be ob'ained. However, the bonds have been sold and the contract awarded to Doyle Bros., of Tucson and San Diego, and work of installation is now under way. The contract calls for some eight miles or more of ten and eight inch sewer pipe, of the outfall sewer sys tem. It will have an outlet sediment tank, where the sewage will be elect rically treated and purified, prevent ing the possibility of the spread of contagion from the refuse. before being thrown into the sewer below Tempe. The Doyle Bros, contract calls for the instillation of the work for the city, but does not include the connecting up of the sewers witli the private houses. This work will be done by the private - householde s ml under private contract. Messrs. George G. and W. .1. New Equipment Being Installed in Business Houses Splendid In crease for First Five Days . of New Year That there is a general increase in business and that the prosperity wave is already here is the optomistie view of George E. Kellogg, local manager of the Mountain States Telephone com pany. It is the mission of Mr. Kellogg to visit the patrons of the exchange soon after the first of each and every month. While the telephone is coming to bo looked upon as a necessity yet at the same time ith as been demonstrat ed that people have been able to do without the service. For the reason that no less than fifteen phones have been installed in the first five days of the new year has led to the conclusion I that there ia a "going up" feeling in the atmosphere and the fact that peo ple are coming to realize the existance of better times is no doubt responsible lor the increase in new business. Among those who are installing addi tional equipment is the A. & I!. Gro cery who now have two main line in struments, The O. K. Stables, the Kleinman stables and Mesa Fish Market. The remainder of the new business comes from the residential sc tion, not only w ithin the corporate limits tit the city but from the section to the south and east of Mesa.
