A Want Ad will see I more customers than you ean. I MESA NEWS NOTES I l i , RECLAIMING THE DESERT Wilbur-Dorraan Punipi :ig Plant Tried Out With Success Will Mean T?e elaiminc; of Many Desert Acres . At about the same hour that the speechmuking at the Roosevelt dam celebration commenced at Roosevelt on Thursday, the pumping plant on the Dorman- Miller tract of approxi mately 2000 acres and located seven miles northeast of Mesa was put in motion. The far-reaching extent of the experiment is indeterminable. The ida. of the men interested in the vnture is to make of tho land a huge fruit farm. The experiment had its inci piency two years ago when several score of orange trees were taken to the desert and transplanted with the idea that the warmer air of the higher ground and somewhat protected by the foothills would insure immunity from the frosts and killing freezes of win ter. That the venture is a success is demonstrated by the further expendi ture of money and time in working out a pumping proposition on an ex tensive scale. In case the pumping of the warm underground water onto the land (roves a success it will mean the uti lizing of thousands of acres of some of the richest land in the state. If it can be demonstrated that citrus trees can be grown at a profit on the land that is now in a desert waste then the day on which the big pumping plant was put in operation will go down in history alongside that of the day that water first flowed over the spillways at Roosevelt. The pumping plant has a greater scope for the reason that its limitations wili not be bounded as in the gravity" Irritation systems. There are hundreds of thousands of acres of land lying east of Mesa ready to be taken up under the homestead act, which are just as susceptible to irri gation ami Just as well protected from the lower temperatures as is the tract already being placed under irrigation. BIRTH OF DAUGHTER Mr. and Mrs. Ben Riggs are the parents of a daughter born to them Wednesday, at their home on East First avenue. JUNIOR PLAY LAST NIGHT The Junior olass of the Mesa I'nion High School put on a play at the as sembly room last night entitled "The Sophomores." There were thirteen students !n the cast and each acquit ted themselves very creditably. PICTURES OF THE DAM The first pictures of the Roosevelt dam celebration on the screen were those at the Majestic last night. Man ager Menhennelt secured the services of the Camera Fiends to visit the dam during the celebration where they se cured a splendid lot of views of the crowd and the ceremonies during the celebration. PLAYING A RETURN DATE One feature about the Roosevelt dam is that it is playing a return date at the same location. The. same thrill ing sights of water going over tho spillway were to lie seen yesterday the Kame as on the date of the celebration Many local people who were unable to visit the dam on the 15th, made the trip yesterday while quite a few cars passed through evidently enroute to the reservoir. RETURNS FROM VISIT Mr. and Mrs. E. 1!. Griggs have re turned from a visit at their old home in Atlanta, and Oklahoma. Mr. Grigg will return to his old position at the Crescent this morning. Attaway, local manager of the Egyptian Cotton Oin, contributed his portion towards the general amuse ments at.. the, celebration Thursday by losing control of one perfectly good Panama hat A gust of wind carried the brand new lid out into the bosom of the lake to the amusement of the onlookers ' DEATH OF MRS. LILLYWHITE The funeral of- Mrs. Stella Lilly white will take' place at ten o'clock this morning from the family residence northeast of the city with burial in the Mesa cemetery. Mrs. Lillyvvhite was taken to Salt Lake City a few weeks ago where she underwent an operation for Cue removal of a cancer, her death occurring at the L. D. S. hospital. She is survived by a husband, c. W. Lilly white and one daughter, aged even. The funeral services will be under the direction of Bishop Dana. CAPTURE OF QUEBEC " A historical event.
