PIPES FROM PIPESTONE AT GRAVES' INDIAN SHOP Suggestion for an Arrangement of European Peace. Included in the window display of Graves' Indian Shop on West Adams street are several Indian Peace Pipes. These pipes have caused quite a little discussion of late, and it has been suggested that they he sent over to the fighting nations in hopes that the Indian tradition might still hold good, and that after a few "drags" from the Peace pipes that peace might reign in Europe. (Juite a history is wrapped up in these pipes, for they are sacred among all Indians. Many years ago the Sioux phip pewa Indians were at war. They had no guns to fight with and car ried on their battles with arrows and spears. The great battle, which was the hist, occurrtd near wilt re is now located the little town of Pipestone, Minnesota. li was sup posed to have been a very bloody battle ar.toiie of which all nothern Indians have a tradition. Peace was brought about, and the two chiefs dug a piece of red stone lroin the earth and troin it made a peace prpe. They called their captains of war together, and passed along the peace pipe, each taking one long puff. Ever afterwards the stone which is red and soft was dug and made into pipes, ami tibo'cd to tne differ ent tribes of North America. It had a great value among all Indian Na tions, and even to this day these pipes are isc-d when a contract Is made by two different Indian trihes. The legend is a pretty one. "The blood from the figitinyr wprriors shed in Southwestern Minnesota, by both Sioux end Chippawas ran uown into the earth and colored a ledge of rock. When truce was declared the two chiefs broke off a piece tnd made it iito a Si cred i ipe which when smoked gave peace to them ever afterwards." This Pipestone (marry is now op erated by the Sioux Indians who come South every from their rcs-or nlioiis in Dakota and mine this rock yeai. They mak? beautiful souvenirs from this ted colored stone. Indian pipes, charms, etc., and is one of their sources of profits to them. In Longfe:iov,-'s "Hiawatha," this legend is mentioned, so those whe wish to may read about the famous pipestoue peace pipe. LIBRARY CLOSED MONDAY The Carnegie . In ins recently issued order, feec retary of the Interior Lane has ac centuated a wide-awake policy in the direction of making it possible for Americans to "Se'e America I'irst." While it is true that state and local automobile clubs and commercial bo dies promptly followed the sugges tion of President John A. Wilson of the American Automobile Associa tion, that they make clear to the Department of the Interior the quite general desire for the admission of motor vehicles into Yellowstone Park it must not be forgotten that pre vious secretaries of the Interior had been similarly petitionee! with very intangible results. But Secretary Lane took a real interest in the matter and referred it to his assistant, Stephen T. Mather, for thorough investigation- and deci sion. Familiar with the western country though the owner of a farm in Connecticut, Mr. Mather prompt ly proceeded to the subject and de cided upon the plans necessary' to admit of the introduction of the mod em form of roads transportation. In the official bulletin from Secre tary Lane refitjence is made to the necessity of ' new telephone lines, checking stations, and imposing, re gulations which will insure a safe use of Park roads by motor cars as -.veil as by horse-drawn vehicles.
