I had compiled clippings from the newspapers of articles on the I.os Aneeles to Phoenix race, clo'piiirs beinfr from the Pacific i-nst papers alone. The clippings fasttned together would have ex tendi cr two thousand feet and . very article had the name Phoe nix Arizona in its headlines. The Associated Press annually de votes two thousand words on the Eos Ar.soles to Phoenix and El Paso to I'l'o.nix races. The maker of ev ery winning car. tiie tins used on the winning car, the oil used in the winning car and other accessories useil in the winnintr car spends thousands of dollars advertising these facts in display ads in various ma -BaziTies throughout the country. Ev ery one of these display ads has the name Phoenix Arizona. In ad dition to this, articles are written iii the races for all prominent mo t r magazines and reach thousands of readers. It is safe to say that for Phoenix to obtain the same amount of publicity at advertising rates would cost her far to exceed one "nundred thousand dollars. The race also advertises the fact through the publicity given it that there are travelled route throutrh Arizona that are feasible and easy to the motorist. This is in itself of considerable advantage to the route over which the race passes. There is on an average of five thousand cars a year that travel front the East or some portions of the middle West to .the Pacific coast. The occupants of each one of these cars must necessarily spend from twenty to twenty-five dol lars a day on their journey and they naturally seek tho route which is easy. When a route is advertised throughout the I'nited States as hav ing been traversed between El Paso and Phoenix and between Phoenix and California in a matter of from sixteen to eighteen hours, the mo torist's attention is called to it and he is convinced that he can cover the same ground .in a. few hours more I will not touch upon the publicity Igixen 10 cars competing in tiie race as that is a matter in which only I the manufacturers are interested. Hut auto raring is a clean sport and has never yet been tainted with a sus picion of crookedness or foul play. It calls for the best that there is in a car, in the driver and in the road traversed and is of incalcuable bene fit from an advertising standpoint to tho country adjacent to the road of the race. ID c lliLvllkJ A A A he Salt River Valley with Phoe nix its center is a motorist's play ground with a wide field for action. Motoring more than any sport today constantly delights the performers and the varied objectives that a few hours' ride from Phoenix per mits offers an unending joy to tho lovers of this sport. But a few years ago our radius for a day's outing was limited by the horse ;j a few miles. The mountains on either side were a long way off and a ride to the 'Hole-in-the-Rock" was an all day affair. Today a few explosions of our motor and we are looking into Paradise Valley or purr ing toward Granite Reef and our sphere of vision has en'crged so profoundly that the protecting mountains about our valley no longer shut off the wonders beyond. We have, right at hand, however, and almost within our own irrigated valley, motor trips that are unsur passed for variety and view. Every Phoenix motorist should take the run to the Max Delta gold mine ten miles southwest from town. The road leads south on Central avenue through green fields of alralfa and grain, slowly rising to tho western canal, the southern houndry of cul tivation, and into the desert road beyond that winds itself out of view from the city back of the foothills that guard the Salt river mountains. Through dry washes sentineled by si lent Sahuaras over low hills blos soming with wild flowers in the spring the road continues higher and higher until the mine camp is reached and at hand the valley bo low is sighted through a niche in the mountains and the city crowded in on every side by the soft fields yields itself to view. The mine, five hundred feet higher up, perched on the bare mountain side, is radily ac- cssible and the view on the ore dump is unequaled. Far to the cast Four Peaks topped with white beckoim us to the Roosevelt Dam eighty miles away the red contour of McDowell forty-five miles distant marks the old army post and offers a siren's c.all to someday motor there. The winding Arizona canal stretches thread-like in our vision lor forty miles and ends at Granite Reef. Ingleside with its orange groves, and Chandler and the San Marcos lay before us. Far to tht left the rugg ed peaks that guard the tropic set ting of Castle Hot Springs jut above their lower brothers straight north on Central avenue one can follow the line up the old Black Canyon road where the stages in the earlier days rumbled their passengers to and from Prescott. The old stage station forty miles away still bears iife and a steaming dinner awaits the motor party now where hungry mule skinners were wont to dine. Arizona with its wealth of historic lure and myriad scenic changes of fers no belter base for the pleasure seeking motor fan than Phoenix and the .Salt River Vadey. WARREX MCAP.TIIL'R. o Things Doing In Railroad Circles Something doing all the time. This is very true in railroad circles in the Salt River Valley. Little does the general public appreciate the enorm ous amount of produce, live stock and other commodities which are shipped each year from the farms in the Salt River Valley. Nearly loO.OOO cars are required to handle that part of the output which is used outside of the valley. In 1914, 1,775 cars of live stock alone were hauled from Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, Glendale, Chandler and other points in the Valley. Out of every 100 cars of live stock 75 are carloads of cattle, 14 are carloads of hogs and 12 are carloads of sheep. It requires over 100 cars to handle the wool clip. Each year approxi mately half a million sheep are shear ed at points in or adjacent to the valley and the average cilp weighs eight pounds. Allowing 40,000 pounds to the car, gives a minimum of 100 cars for this product alone. Some months the shipments of hay run into very large totals. One record shows 428 cars of alfalfa hay shipped in 24 days. One shipper had at the time an order for ten cars a dayfor 12 days. As many as 2,750 cars of hay have been shipped in one year. In 1913, 800 cars were required for melons and cantaloupes with 90 cars for sugar and 20 for syrup. As high as 60 cars of honey have been shipped from the valley in one season and 625 carloads of grain and seed, the bulk of this being alfalfa seed, has been shipped out in one year. When we look at the shipments of live stock for 1913 we find that the total was nearly 2,000 cars and the figures for the shipments of eattle from the entire state are astounding. Arizona received J15,000,000 for the cattle shipped out of the state in 1914. Allowing $3,000 as the average value of a carload of cattle we find that it will require over 5,000 cars to handle the cattle shipment from the state in a single year. If we also add hogs, sheep and wool the figures will still further considerably increase. The state has at present 1,600.000 sheep and the number is growing rapidly each year. The wool clip from the entire state should reach 13,000,000 pounds which will require a great number of cars to handle to advantage. Some months are busier than others but each month sees considerable ac tivity. We have a record of over 2,000 cars of cantaloupes, alfalfa, hay, fruits, honey and grains shipped in a single month. The introduction of sugar cane will considerably increase the carload shipments of sugar. Tho growing demand for Salt River Valley vegetables will call for a larger acre age each year, which, in turn, will require more train loads of cars to deliver to the different markets. Early lettuce, cabbage and cauliflower all must be put on the market in first class condition, and as the true valuo of the Salt River Valley product is appreciated by the American pub lic the calls for these vegetables wili increase enormously. Phoenix has no main line railroal but the enormous tonnage which tho valley affords will be inducement enough to insure the building of a n.ain line of railroad in the very near future. There is room for more than one main line, and the advan tage which a line through the Salt River Valley affords can no', bu long overlooked or neglected by prom inent railroad men in the country. Through the Salt River Valley a line of railroad can be built which will connect with the lowest grade transcontinental line in the country. The enormous amounts which rail roads are spending to eliminate curves and steep grades are not invested without good reason, and as soon as engineers lealize the enormous sav ing that would follow the construc tion of the lov. line roa 1 thro'igh the Salt River Valley the work will com mence. It can be looked for at any time, there will always remain the added incentive which is presented by the valley with its enormous tonnage of out-going products. Wo need to say nothing of the shipments to the valley which are also im pirtant. In considering the figures which have been presented for shipments out of the valley it must be borne in mind that tcday approximately 1510,000 acres of land, in all, are in cultivation. Under the project there will be eventually 220.000 acres with the addition of about 80,000 acres in private projects adjoining and in ad dition to the Salt River project. Further, at present throughout the valley there are many large holdings which will within the next few years ,be reduced and adapted to more intensive cultivation. It is intensive farming that interests the railroad people. At the lowest possible esti mate the iands under intensive culti vation will double the volume of farm products of all kindds that will be shipped by rail to outside points, and when the added area Is also taken into consideration the shipments from this section will total enormous fig ures. Not allowing for any special crops which undoubtedly will be in troduced and which will add con siderably to any estimate of car load shipments it is safe to say that within five years the volume of bus iness going out of the Salt River valley should reach 35,000 carloads a year.
