Team's Presence at Indianapolis
When the 35 cars, the pick of America
and Europe, tear away at Indianapolis
May 29. on their 500-mile orgy of speed,
there will be in the field just one team
representative of the great Detroit and
Michigan factories which give annually
to the world so overwhelming a propor
tion of its new automobiles.
That same team will also be the sole
representative of those factories which
feature quantitative production, the world
over. As in most races of major import
ance, held during recent years, this team
the Maxwell will again find itself com
peting only with cars representing Amer
ican manufacturers whose outputs are
- small; with cars representing the hand
mad methods of Europe ;.with cars of
special character, assembled from picked
parts by picked mechanics.
The presence of the Maxwell cars in
the big race is due directly to the belief
of Walter E. Flanders, the Maxwell pres
ident and general manager, that his en
gineers and production men are as well
prepared and as thoroughly equipped to
turn out fast, enduring cars, as are the
manufacturers of Europe.
More than a . year ago Mr. Flanders
decided to build Maxwell Racing Cars
which would be able to compete in the
fastest company.
"We have a direct responsibility in

this racing matter," he declared, "and we
cannot afford to ignore it. We have
beaten the European manufacturers in
the markets of the world. We can beat
them just as decisively on the race track.
The defense of our speed trophies can
not be left solely to the smaller Ameri
can factories; such a course is. not just.
We should carry our share of the burden
and we can have a lot of fun and satis
faction doing it;- Furthermore, there is a
fast growing army of Maxwell owners
who want to see us doing this duty on
the race tracks of the nation."
Consequently the three Maxwells which
competed at Indianapolis last year, win
ning a considerable share f their prize
money, were the result. These ears
were developed to even greater speed in
the following races of the 1914 campaign,
and in the races of the current year lead
the country in winnings.
The new Maxwells which have been
entered at Indianapolis are the logical
development of these first cars. Like
the others, they retain all the broad basic
characteristics of Maxwell touring car
design, including the general arrange
ment of the various units, the long
stroke, small-bore motors, the detachable
cylinder heads, the left steer andcenter
control, and the enclosing of all interior,
moving parts. . They have been built
complete in the Maxwell shops, even to
such details as rear axles, bodies, radi- '
ators and tanks.
Indianapolis is one of the few spots on
the racing map where Mr. Flanders is
able to see his cars race. There, with alfr
the pleasure felt by a horseman in the
speed flights of a colt of his own breed
ing, he will watch them in their effort to
defend American speed laurels.
"Of course we hope to win, he de

against us, we will still hope that the(
