With an attendance that far ex

pastor of the Christian Church, who is
(loinir the preaching, delivered a most
interesting sermon on "Looking Into
Jesus." Throughout the discussion the
preacher received the very closest at
tention of the larue audience. The
music was furnished by the splendid
orchestra of the Christian Church ami
this in itself is worth going a long way
to hear. Service"? will be held in the
lent nislitly in. til further notice.
The meetings are the initial step in
,1 series to be inaugurated by the I'irst
Christian Church of Phoenix in the ex
ecution i if a plan to carry the gospel
message to the people of the city and
organise Sunday schools in various
parts of the city. The need for such
work has long bet n known bv the las-
tor and members of the church, who'
have given much thought to it. Ii is I
hoped that a Sunday school will start j
from the present meeting, which will '
probably lie curried on for two r three

APPOINTMENT OF
NEGRO IS CAUSE
OF SENSATION
On Recommendation of ''Uncle
George" Chase, Gov. Hunt Has
Named Colored Porter from
Clifton on Launching Dele
gation Considerable excitement prevailed
in radical democratic circles yester
day when it became known that Oov
ernor Hunt had appointed a negro
resident of Clifton, a member of the
delegation to represent the state at
the launching of the battleship Ari
zona. There had been rumors Just
before the governor left that he had
named a colored delegate to the
christening of the battleship, but the
lteiy established until yesterday.
Investigation disclosed the fact that
the Tom Turner named in the list of
official delegates by the governor is
a colored porter on the Arizona and
Xew Mexico railroad, and that he
had been recommended for the ap
pointment by Senator (leorge H.
Chase of "(Ireenlee county. The gov
ernor, it was stated, had nicer had
the pleasure of meeting Mr. Turner,
and added his name to the list of
I hose on the committee on the sena
tor's re'iuest, in fact he appointed a
number of citizens to the delegation
solely on the recommendation of
members of the legislature or others.
The appointment, it was pointed out.
was merely an act of courtesy from
one official to another.
Senator Chase, when asked for
some statement as to his recom
mendation, replied that Mr. Turner
was a eitizi : of the state, and ill
fact a native son of Arizona, and
that so far as he could see, he had a
perfect light to attend the launch
ing. Although a republican, he had
always been an admirer of "I'mle
(Jeorge" and had worked for him de
votedly at the last election. Some
three weeks ago he wrote to the
senator from Greenlee, stating that
lie
ml his wife were nlanning to be
'in New York at the time of the
christening, and that they would like
very m.ieh to see the launching of
the great battleship Arizona. Realiz
ing that there wojld be small chance
for them to see the ceremony unless
I heir names were on the list of dele
gates, he asked the senator if this
could not be arranged. The senator
turned the letter over to the governor,
and the appointment was made. He
did not inform the governor as to
Mr. Turner's rate.
