Mr. Hand of California May Take Charge of Local Church At a meeting of the members of the Congregational church yesterday morn- j ing it was decided to call a new pastor ' and the Rev. Clifford Hand of Lemon's ! Grove, California, will be extended an invitation at once to visit and deliver a series of sermons from the Tenme i pulpit. It was a heated meeting that , the Congregationalists had to con sider their future ptlght and it was nearly one o'clock when the session was .adjourned. Rev. Dr. HeaM, superintendent or the Congregational churches in Arizona ami one or two adjoining states, was present. The members took up the business meeting immediately after the close of Sunday school. Tne idea of abandoning the Congregational church in Tempe was quickly done away with and the selection of a pastor was taken up. Rev. Mr. Hand will be approached at once on the proposition of visiting the local pastorate and of taking this as his permanent field. Watson and son Ernest left yesterday afternoon in their new seven -passenger Stunebaker for a visit to the coast, including the San Diego exposition and possibly a Irlp or north to the Frisco fair. They expected-to puss last night with the D. II. McDonald family at Buckeye and proceed on from there today. FLUITT NOT FLETCHER An item appearing in the columns of the Tempe news yesterday morning bearing reference to the return of one Johnny Fletcher from a visit on the coast was meant to speak of Johnny Fluitt who worked last year as weigh er at the cotton ginnery. Fletcher de nies the fact that he has neen even out of Tempe this summer notwith standing he wishes the item might have spoken the truth. ODD FELLOWS The Odd Fellows spent a hury time in session Saturday nfght and chief on their program of business was the dis cussion of a site for the Orphans Home. The tract of land a mile went of Tempe will not be utilized for the home as was planned and now a committee from the lodge is busy in nearch of a new location for recommendation to the trustees of the grand lodge. DEATH OF MRS. MILTCN ANKNEY Airs. Milton Ankney died at her home j in the Cuber Addition on Saturday 1 evening at 10 o'clock. Mrs. Ankney ; has bet n an invalid during the last five j year's the direct cause of death being , dropsy. Mrs Ankney was born ami grew to womanhood in Iowa. Several j years ago the family moved to Colorado ; for the benefit of her healtii. Their j stay in Colorado failed to benefit her j health and about a year ago they came j to Arizona traveling overland and ar j riving here about the first of the year. She leaves a husband, two sons and two daughters who were ui;h tier at death and during her years of sick ness. Th- funeral services will lie held trom the Burton undertaking parlors this morning ;.t 10 o'clock. The ser vices will be conducted by Miss Coherts of the Pentecostal church of Phoenix. John McAllister was so over come with joy at becoming an uncle that he forgot to say whether the new arrival was a boy or girl. Dingle returned on Saturday evening from their trip to the mountains. They were unfortunate in having a breakdown so they got no farther than Pine. Miss Elsie Jones and Mrs. J. M. Schuele and Mrs. Miller of Tine accompanied- them from the latter place. Miss Jones has been spending her three weeks vacation at Flagstaff and with Mrs. J. M. Srhuele at Pine, Arizona. MR.
