Reactionary tendencies were uppermost through out the session despite new high re cords in war shares. It is this par liculir group, however, which mani fested the increased heaviness, and the susceptibilities of these issues to adverse" influences rumors in fact --and demonstrations of new artificial and speculative character of sensa tional movements in this class of stocks. The selling of many of these issues was resumed at the outset, the decline being in a nature of a con tinuation of yesterday's late opera tions. The early decline was soon checked mainly as a result of the im provement shown by railways but even Ibis maneuver failed in its ef fect, the second decline setting in before noon. During the mid-session prices again lifted, in some instances risinir to over their first recovery but all of these gains were wiped out lael on the circulation of reports of an accident to an American vessel. This caused another, if anything, more hur ried scramble to unload. When it was learned the accident consisted of noth ing more than a minor explosion on a torpedo boat in home waters, the trices immediately retrieved their loss, only to go still lower during the final hour. The selling in that tiiriod was accelerated by the ac tivity on the part' of short interest which recognized on a hollow tone market, and made the most of the situation. Liquidation was most ex tensive in the later dealings, the support was luke warm at the best. The outcome of results in the closing were numerous in marginal accounts, to that degree the market now pre sents a stronger technical aspect. The sales were 1,175,000 shares, ag gregating $3,820,000. Metals Copper, steady; Electrolytic, lihi. Silver 49 3-8.
