The most ob vious effect of the step taken yesterday by the local money committee to reduce bank loans was a further curtailment of operations on the stock exchange today. Active selling at the outset was at tended by declines of one to four points in the most vulnerable issues, but much of this loss was quickly recov ered while here and there a few note worthy gains were established. Next to L-nited States Steel, which moved in a narrow groove and closed at one point loss, the most active stock was Mexican Petroleum". From its ini tial decline of almost four points, rapid recovery was made, ending at a gain of 6 points. Other oils, American Smelting, some of the motors, Sumatra Tobacco, and low grade coalers finished at advances, but the general list developed heavi ness later, rails and equipments again yielding to pressure. Total sales amounted to 600.000 shares. Foreign issues reacted moderately with Liberty bonds and the general do mestic group on more contracted deal ings. Total sales par value aggregated $8,273:000. Old United States bonds were unchanged on call. BRADSTREET'S REVIEW NEW YORK, Oct 25. Bradstreet's tomorrow will say: "Trade at wholesale has receded at many eastern points, and conservatism born of peace talk has set in, without, however, abating the governments war-directed energies. Distribution from the hands of retail dealers has been adversely affected by the effects of influenza and warm weather, while Industrial outputs have been curtailed by illness among workers. With the epidemic o influenza waning, discus sions about peace are receiving more attention, perhaps tho most attention, and superficial prospects in that re spect tend to deter merchants from op erating freely for 1919, while also sup erinducing a disposition to affect can-cellat'""- although complaints of in sufficient sunplies of merchandise still are numerous. The central fact is that merchants, espeeiallv those in the east. seem more content to trade in accord - "GO TO HELL," HE i TOLD HUN OFFICERS mat' Major Whittlesey. Major Charles M. Whittlesey, a former New York lawyer, nd his battalion were surrounded for five days by a German force and cut off from all assistance. The Hun lead ers sent Whittlesey a note tellinz him that his men were surrounded and ought to surrender to save them selves. Whittlesey crumpled up th note and said, "Tell them all to go to hell." Many a man who has t never been able to invent an excuse to hand the wife for getting home late is now accomplishing wonderful things. Already 2,000.000 appliances for the de struction of U-boats have reached the patent office- One man has evolved a brick boat, built entirely of brick from the keel to the crow's nest The chief value of this construction Is that the brick boat will fool the wisest of U boats. It sinks as soon as It is launched and the U-boats are never able to find It. Use The Republican Classified Pages for Results Read for Profit. THE IS 3 George McManus
