G. A. GOODWIN, Tempe
MESA. May 27. This week will
mark the close of the year lor the
grade schools and for the Mesa Union
High school. It has been a year during
a portion of which, the trustees of both
institutions. Superintendent Matthews
and the faculties of both schools won
dered whether or not the year would
be completed with anything like satis
factory advancement in the various
departments. This was because of the
influenza epidemic' which in Mesa as
in other towns both of the ttate and
country, wrought havoc with school
programs of work. The Mesa schools
were closed for a number of weeks, and
when finally it was safe to open them,
it was decided to give main emphasis
to the principal essentials, covering
other studies in a systematic way and
yet with a view to greatest economy
of time.
It is a source of satisfaction both
to the administrative department, the
faculties nd the parents, to see that
after carrying out the work as out
lined, but few departments have fallen
behind to any extent, and that the
pupils may be advanced conscientious
ly, as having completed the course for
the year. The following are among
the events that will mark the closeing
week:
Senior Class Play Tonight
The class of '19 of Mesa high will
present "The Man on the Box," to
night at tho Orpheum theater. The
cast is as follows:
Martin, clerk of the 3rd precinct
court. Leigh Clark.
Officer Cassidy, of the 3rd precinct
police station, Howard Stallings.
Officer O'Brien of the mounted po
lice, Erwin Stapley.
Charles Henderson, a newspaper
man, Ellsworth Menhennett.
Judge Watt, of the 3rd precinct
court, Franklin Bo wen.
Lieut. Robert Warburton, lately re
signed, Paul Dana.
Miss Betty Annesley, Valerie Men
hennett. Mrs. Conway, her confidante, Mildred
Houston.
Cort, the Annesley's maid, Mabel
Morris.
Pierre, the Annesleys chef, Dudley
Ford.
Col. George Annesley, retired army
officer, Wellington Blackburn.
Count Karloff, a Russian diplomat,
Cecil Lacy.
Miss Nancy Warburton, Bob's sister,
Jennette Johnson.
William, assistant groom. Leland
Pew.
Annette Maxwell, Thelma Hopkins.
Marion Dawson, Jennie Hibhert.
Banquet For Eighth Grade
The pupils of Franklin schools, who
will pass from the eighth grade to
Mesa high at the close of this week,
will be given a banquet on Thursday
night in the school building. Details
of the program have not been arranged,
but the invocation will be given by
Rev. Magwootl. Mrs. Huber s chorus
will sing, and the address 10 the pupils
will be given by Mrs. Clara Baker.
There are 90 boys and girls who will
complete the grammar school work and
who next term will go to swell the
crowd that already is cracking the
sides of the present high school build
ing. It will be impossible to complete
any adequate arrangements by Sep--tember,
but the $100,000 bonds recently
voted, promise ultimate relief from the
crowded conditions of the high school.
Commencement Exercises Saturday
Since Friday is Memorial day, the
schools will be closed on that date and

"Beggin' Your Pardon"
The southside department is mighty
glad to hear so many people complain
ing because the Mesa news has come
up missing so often the past week. If
you didn't miss it you wouldn't kick.
The truth is that the correspondent has
been enjoying an aftermath of the
"flu," and had it not been for the cour
tesy of Secretary Lush of the Com
mercial club, the Mesa clumn would
haTe been lacking even oftener. Be it
remembered, however, that this is the
first time in many months when the
correspondent has been responsible for
any missing days for the Mesa column.
Occasionally the copy is lost in transit.
Meanwhile, we are sorry you missed
your regular meal, but glad you did
miss it
