"'Late in the autumn, or early in the winter, the ermine changes from r'ddisii brown to while, sometimes sl siitlv washed with greenish yellow or cream color, and again as brilliantly while an anything in nature or art; ihe end of the tail, however, remains intensely black and at first thought it might be supposed that this would make the animals conspicuous on the while background of snow; but in re ality it has just the opposite effect. Place an ermine on new fallen snow i:i such a way that it caNts no shadow and you will find that the black poit holds your eye in spite of yourself and that at a little distance it is quite impossible to. follow the outline of the weasi 1 itself. Cover the tail with snow and you can begin to make out the position of the rest of the animal, but as long as the tiptof the tail is in sight yuii see that and that only'." The supply of human hair has been hardly sufficient to meet the added de mands of the trade, they .say. influenza, is given as the reason for .he tremendous inerea.se in wig mak ing. Thousands of persons who were attacked with this disea.se have visited the city's wig makers carrying the hirsute adornment of happier days and beseeching the experts to turn them out something lifelike in the way of it toupe before their friends began to make personal remarks about their re remhlanoe to a hard boiled egg. "The loss of hair in Philadelphia has been appalling," said Anthony Buch, a wig maker. ""The worst of it is that many persons whose hair had fallen out could not use it again. It was lack ing in elasticity and life." "Wig makers decline to estimate, the poundage of false hair that is daily paraded on the streets of the city. The details, as ex plained by L. B. Rhodes, oil chemist of the North Carolina department of ag riculture, are thus set forth in a press bulletin issued by the North Carolina section of the American Chemical so ciety. After mentioning the wide distribu tion of the coeklebur and the ease or gathering it, Mr. Rhodes continued: "Those which I have gathered were either dry or in a half dry condition. They were first cut in half by a trim ming" board and the kernels mashed. They were then placed in a. box and vigorously shaken. The hulls were taken out, leaving the kernels at the bottom. These kernels were then pounded ajid rubbed in a mortar until the black shucks were removed, after ZEROLM ' 'fill 3 CALLOWS WET E . "The pressed cake left after e pressing the oil should be of value as a food for cattle, and certainly it can be readily used as a fertiliser." because of-the richness of the kernel and ease with which the oil can be extracted. The yield from the kernel is about 30 per cent, and the kernels constitute about the same proportion of the bulk of the crude burs. The press cake contains 40.34 per cent ;.t protein.
