Ei Boys, I truly believe what's in a feller must, and needs come out, j! and verily in this instance did come out, (up) but a dirtier trick 3 never was formulated than this which made it come out Because a gink is well disposed, advantage should not be taken of him, but Ij alas, we are born to prey on the weak. "Guy" is a familiar name, 3 used as surname, or an "apostrolic;" I won't use this name demon-- fl stratively or personally today, but merely as a prolix, with no refer-;, j,J ence to bank, lodge, circus, minstrel or lady catcher, but here! I 3 must tell the story: Gathered at a festive board sat a bunch of us I Phoenicians, and having some soda water tubes recharged with an J 3 article not phosporescent, but quite resolvent, our brains were stimu- g. lated, and wits invigorated. In our midst was a young physician, a close bible student, but closer anatomical student, who had care- U 3 fully studied and read the habits of the "wild locusts," and their FEJ great value to "John in the wilderness" as an extraneous food, which 11 he sought to test, and a mess having been secured, thej- were strip pa ped, and plated, and truly the resemblened shrimp made them un- f j detectable: All save "Guy," were posted on the artful deception, the feS understanding being to try them out on him, and it non-effective, n j fall in line. The fun was at its height; wit flowed, so did other things, Guy meantime cracking, with that gaurmad relish and de T light to him only assume, when he seemed suddenly to become ab- j A strated, and that sweet smile which has conquered even the ada- t-1 mantine dusky virgins of our Indian dormitories, pensively changed P to a saddened visage of melancholy which to all appearances caused I a J great consternation among the group, who passed lemons, salt, malt, us j (extract), and were all fairly wild in forced endeavor to know, im- mm - 1 agine, learn, obtain, suggest or in some way ascertain if nature's laws I 3 a had been transcribed or our Creator's laws transgressed: "Boys," he 3 drawled in apparent agony, "I am at deaths door, the sins of omis- pJ sion and commission rise as a glacier in mid ocean:' I am lost, and F-R-R-up-up! he moaned, straining as tho' life's tendons depended " fJ on the forces of nature. "George," "he cried,1 "My friend in trial or 5jJ distress, press my brow, soothe my dying moments, and tell me, can Ej you make for me amends, or in any manner ease the punishment H which for past offenses awaits me?" "Now, George," he continued, u3 "When I bunked you out of those poker chips, I never dreamed the tal end was so near and you will forgive, won't you, Georgie?" Boys, I'm Adamantine, inflexible, and four parts solid, but this got my goat, a and bursting into tears, joined by him, we moistened all the linen within our scope with an overflow unparallelled in history. By this j time the Dr.'s conscience had smitten him, and the weak kneed boob S gave the joke away: Never! Never! Never! have I seen, during my K j short carer, such an instantanous change come over beast, man, or tifi 0 insect: In the twinkling of an eye our dying hero was a wrathful ' "Verdugo," our helpless prostrate weakling, a Willard-Dempsey, Kj Johnson-Jeffry, all combined powerful pugilist, and the way he done " a us up, and other things up, I'm not going to detail: Say! ask him how he likes locusts'.'
