Lady Clifton, at the left, is one of the handsomest of British beauties to seek separation from a soldier of the great war. Lord Clifton, 32 years old, 'was a major in the royal artillery. Lady Clifton was active in the trenches distributing smokes and delicacies to the American soldiers. "The big hotel will be built, despite any and all obstructions and obstruc Uonists." ' " . Such was the unequivical statement issued yesterday by Jordan and Grace, who have made all the arrangements for the financing and building of a million dollar hotel on the east half of old central school block, when asked what effect the suit instituted yester day in the name of J. T. Murphy, to reslrain the transfer of the property. "There is no object in such tactics." paid S. E. Jordan, "except to delay the building of this much needed improve ment. They are simply trying to hold up the project, for personal reasons, no doubt. "While we know who is back of this suit to obstruct the erection of the big hotel, we would like to see them come out in the open and let the public know who they are and state their reasons for this action. In the long run it will make no difference to us, but the pub lic is entitled to know who they are and why. Indignant at Move "There is much popular indignation at this attempt to throttle this much needed improvement," Mr. Jordan con tinued. "The local people who pledged the $100,000 have, most of them, been in to see us today and told us without reservation that they will stand by us and the eastern people who are putting up fully a million additional of outside capital can be depended on to stand pat till the matter can be threshed out. "Any delay is to be regretted, how ever. We are ready to begin tearing out the old building, the contractors have notified us that they would begin assembling materials August 15, and break ground not later than September 1 for the building of the hotel. "Upon the starting of the hotel de pends at least another half million dol lars' worth of building in the same neighborhood, which may also be de layed. But the delay will hurt the city as much as it does us. and all we can say is that we are sorry that certain interests have seen fit to do this thing. Public for Hotel The effort to block this project will fail, there is no question about that. Public sentiment is with us. and what the public favprs always comes to pass sooner or later. This hotel will no sooner be fin ished than there will be need for an other one as big, for this city is grow ing, in spite of some people who live here. Thousands of people are being turned away every season for the lack of hotel accommodations- Phoenix is so lacking in room that she cannot say to the world, 'come down and see me.' A small section favors prohibition, but arouses very little enthusiasm. The various reform societies are neither well or ganized nor united. State purchase, which would have been possible early in the war, is now considered beyond the range of practical politics. Pro hibitionists would not have the state touch the trade except to kin it. Com plete suppression without a penny 01 compensation is their policy. Other temperance reformers were reconciled to purchase, if accompanied by a referendum enabling the people to say just how many, if any, saloons should Vemain open in their districts. -Many of these reformers now fear that state ownership might have the effect of perpetuating the trade in stead of gradually extinguishing it, for the reason that this excursion into state socialism would be alluringly profitable. They fear that the people would not vote for doing away with their own property, because it woulil be a fruitful source of revenue at a time when everything taxable is being squeezed to the uttermost. They are entirely opposed, on economic grounds, to the state's paying hundreds of mil lions for an industry and then pro ceeding to kill it off by degrees, losin;-': the capital which it cost and the rev enue which it brings. The average Englishman does not consider such a shortsighted policy either common sense or good business, and he is against it. "When we remember the recuperatior. of the drink trade (after the war), its strength in elections, and the half heartedness of the reform movement, there is little chance of Britain becom ing dry in a hundred years. 1 the labor party were to adopt state pur chase, coupled with a democratic refer endum, which would settle by popular vote how many, if any, saloons were to remain in a particular locality, then there would be a steady reduction in the number. Much will depend on '.he women voters. If there were a cloan cut issue on drink, the vast majority of them would vote for reduction, it not for total prohibition. There is not the slightest prospect of a reform movement in Ireland, where there are more saloons to the population than in any country in the world. . : But there is a chance in Scotland. The Scottish Temperance Act hands over the future of the liquor traffic to the people. It comes into operation in 1920, and under popular referendum allows the people' to vote for the re duction of saloons in municipal areas according to the size of the majority in favor of enforcing the act. If the majority is as much as two-thirds, the vote carries total prohibition. There will be a national campaign in 1320, which may lead to striking re sults. It would be a curious anomaly if this great whisky producing coun try should be, in part if not entirely prohibitionist. The commercial in stincts of the Scot might be equal to such a revolutionary results, and mipht continue to make and export for oth ers the spirit which they could nc longer consume at home. o DEEPLY INTERESTED "One of them there airplanes cu' capers over my place tuther day," re lated Gap Johnson of Rumpus Ridge Ark. "It circled and flapped and cork screwed and squirmed around in the air to beat kingdom. You never seed anybody as interested as my fourteen children were. All the time the show was going on they stood still, rootert to the spot, as it were, with their mouths open and their cars throwed forard. plumb forgetting to scratch their chiggers. And it was fully half an hour after the flying machine had slashed on out of sight before they really came to life and began to rlmv theirselves again with anything like their usual ferocity." I .
