Oliver,-who is chancellor commander elect of the Knights of Pythias lodge, installation of officers could not be held last night, and the date has been postponed until next Friday night. Hoeur. state land com missioner, was in his office at the state house yesterday, having returned from an extended trip over the northern part of the state on business for the land board. FOUND NOT GUILTY Ray McGee, an Indian, charged with the crime oi obtaining property by a bogus check, was found not guilty by a jury in Judge Stanford's court yesterday when it was shown that the boy had not received the goods he purchased with the bogus check. NORMAL TRAFFIC RESUMED Normal traffic to Parker and Ash Fork will surely be resumed this eve ning," said W. S. Goldworthy, agent at the consolidated ticket office, last night, in referring to the bridge which collapsed and wrecked a cantaloupe train recently at Hot Springs Junction. STOLE ICE. IS CHARGE Farito apd Amato Rodriguez, brothers, 24 and 35 years old, were arrested last night by Special Officer Wolf of the Arizona Eastern railroad, charged with stealing ice from refrigerator dispatch cars after the cars were loaded with melons and iced and readv for shipment. MRS. MONTGOMERY IMPROVES Word was received here late yester day afternoon of the improved condi tion of Mrs. John G. Montgomery who was reported critically ill at a Prescott hospital. Sheriff Montgomery who rushed to his wife's bedside, telephoned that her condition was not regarded as serious by the physician in charge of the case. BACK FROM OVERSEAS J. E. Sellers, who has just returned to Phoenix from 18 months overseas ser vice with the 23rd engineers, has gone to work for the state highway depart ment as draughtsman. While in France Sellers was in the St. Mihiel drive. Be fore entering the service he was statis tical 'engineer for the council of de fense. STORM INJURES ROAD Wprd was received by Harold Bargman, county engineer yesterday to the ef fect that a four-mile stretch of county road between Aguila and Wickenburg had been badly damaged by storms. Bargman stated that he would be un able to leave at present to investigate the extent of the damage, but would leave early in the week for the storm section. JAP'S ESTATE IN COURT Ap pointed special administrator of the estate of T. Kusunoki, valued at $2500, K. Ota, a friend of the dead man, fur nushed $5000 bond that he might care for the interests of the heirs-at-law of the decedent, a father. Tahai Kusunoki, and a brother, Hasaichi Kusunoki, both residents of Japan. Kusunoki, who died April 15, had a half interest in a cantaloupe crop which when disposed of will amount to approximately $2500. MUST PAY VICTIM Willie Nash, returned soldier, who pleaded guilty to the charge of assault by means likely to produce bodily harm, was (riven a two year's suspended sentence by Judge Stanford yesterday and ordered to pay $400 to Harvey Oxford, the man he assaulted in a south side pool hall. The amount is to defray Oxford's ex- 92 74 42 W 7 .00 to to pense for physician and drugs as a result of the encounter. Nash was or dered to pay $200 forthwith and $30 a month until the amount- is paid in fulL CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION The civil service commission announces that there will be held in this city i July 26 an examination for forest and field clerks. Sutton of Bishop and company, Los Angeles, son of T. H. ! .Sutton, oldest commercial traveler in ! the state, and also the oldest with the I Bishop firm, will leave this morning; for Los Angeles, after a short visit in Phoenix. Mr. Sutton used to have this territory and has since been in the army as a member of the 346th aero i squadron. RIFLE CLUB MATCH The Phoe nix Rifle club will hold a special mem bers match shoot Sunday morning for a bronze medal furnished by the Na tional Rifle association. The - course will consist of 2000 yards magazine fire and 300 and 500 yards slow fire. The range will be open at 7 o'clock and the match will start promplty at 9 o'clock. It is desired that all members be present and prepared to shoot. STOLE REVOLVER, IS CHARGE Juan Villa was arrested at 10 o'clock- last night by Officer G. L. Strathv, charged with stealing a 41 caliber Colt revolver from Manuel Portillo, 222 South Seventh street. Villa, it is alleged, stole the weapon from un derneath Portillo's pillow last Thurs day night. He was placed in confine ment at the city jail for the night, and his case will probably come up on next Monday afternoon. PASSES BOGUS CHECK Admit ting his guilt when brought before Justice Wheeler yesterday. Silas Earl I'rawford stated that he was hard up when he obtained property from Max Spitalhey by means of a bogus check. Crawford procured $5 w orth of mer chandise and $15 in cash in return for a $20 check drawn on the Phoenix Na tional bank and signed by C. C. Norton. Crawford in waiving his preliminary in the lower court was held to answer to the superior court, his bond being fixed at $500 which he failed to furnish. CHARGED WITH BICYCLE THEFT Joe Bochetti was held to answer to the superior court for the larceny of a bicycle by Justice De Souza yesterday. His bond was fixed at $500 which was not furnished. The complaining wit ness was Juan Gonzales and the history of the "yellow peril was gone into by men who took the stand who declared that they could not confuse the yellow and brown bicycle with any other about town. It was stated that at one stage of its career, the wheel was the property of Rev. Novatus of St. Mary's church. COMMANDER KAYS HERE Com mander Herbert E. Kays, U. S. N and Mrs. Kays are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Emery Kays, the command er's parents. After a week in the val ley they have motored to Iron Springs to spend the hot July days. Com mander and Mrs. Kays will leave for Idaho in August to visit the former's brother. Mr. and Mrs. Emery Kays will remain at Iron Springs for the summer. FORMER PHOENIX MAN IN CITY C. Leonard Wolfe, cashier of the Merchants' and Miners' bank of Ray, arrived in the city yesterday, accom panied by Mrs. Wolfe. They are stay ing at the Jefferson hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Wolfe have just returned from a six weeks vacation trip to their former home in Savannah. Georgia, also visiting other points in Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and Alabama. They will leave today for Ray. Fifteen years ago Mr. Wolfe was connected with the circulation department of The Repub lican. ARREST TWO RUSSIANS Povl Porknoff, 37 years old, a Russian, was arrested at 6 o'clock last night by Officers Edwards and Williams on a warrant sworn out by Jerry Doyle. The Russian, it Is alleged by the com plaint, used vile and prolane language before Mrs. Doyle in a second-hand store owned by Mr. Doyle at Third avenue and Jefferson street. Alex Tolmasoff, 39 years old. another Rus sian, also was arrested at the same time under a warrant sworn out by Mr. Doyle, v Tolmasoff was charged with discharging firearms within the citv limits.
