The motor in dustry refuses to talk armistice or tentlemanly agreement for divisions of erritory. And all this after old friend horse had thought himself secure. Some months h;i a specially built high priced truck made- one trip up this trail but never repeated. The attack cerned too costly. Hut business must be served, and the way of the inef ficient leads to the slaughter house. Now comes the news that a stock Re public truck that for two years has icn hauling freight around Salt Lake rity has made the trip and is quite likely to repeat it as part of its regu-4 iar duties. Mr. Hadley of the Hadley Transfer company ha-s come back en thused over the limitless possibilities of motor trucking and the stamnia of Itepublie trucks. ' We took that truck off its regular tun it has been working for two years and without any special tuning up and with a full capacity load, sent it on the toughest bit of mountain work you can find. Twelve of the 22 miles to the Cardiff mine are up a 30 per t ent grade. Dumping part of our load there hut still carrying better than two tons, we pushed on the remaining tour miles to the I'rince mine up a 4.7 per cent grade. There were times " hen it felt as though we were climb ing up the sides of a cliff. But the truck never faltered or laved down, kept, pounding and sweating its way up and up. the motor humming sweet as a bird. "This is the first time a stock true went up this trail and with the ex ception of one trip by a high priced truck with a special transmission and low gearing, it is the first time the trip has been made. Our gasoline and oil consumption was very low and the power traction was wonderful. It was a wonderful demonstration and we feel we will he well repaid to stand urdize on Republic trucks. We feel that this is the only truck in our fleet of five heavy duty trucks that is capa ble of doing this work." isfq nfib -41m Hit' m -J: v..- .. !-.--.- A policy of guaranteed mecchandise, honetl dealings and comprehensive ser vice has builded the Boss Rubber com pany, with headquarters at El Paso, into the largest automobile tire jobbing firm in the southwest. The firm op erates in West Texas, New Mexico. Arizona and Mexico, Phoenix being headquarters for this state, and is the jobber for Savage tires and Firestone folid truck tires. The office here is lo cated at 38-40-42 South Fourth Ave. The Boss Rubber Company formerly was exclusive Kelly-Springfield tire representative in Kl Paso and the three lower counties of New Mexico. In nine months this firm, specializing on Kelly- Sprinrfielrl tires, exclusively, did a net business of $369,000. In fact, such an extensive business was builded by the Boss people that the Kelly-Springfield company invaded KI Paso, constructed a large business building and established a direct fac tory representation in that community. In consequence, the agency was with drawn from the Boss Rubber company. Thereupon, the Boss firm decided to get a tire on which it could build a great future business on. Such a tire they realized, must be able to pass the acid test of long service, dependability and satisfaction. And in this section of the Country, where climatic condi tions are such that superiority only will meet these requirements, this ap pealed something of a problem. However. F. H. Lazenby, president jf the company, began a series of inves tigattons to determine the tire to be handled. On February 13 of this year, Geo. Kinimiek. at that time representative of the Savage Tire company of the southwest, headquarters in Phoenix, with 13 other representatives of tire manufacturers, gathered at El Paso to OUR CLAIM for recognition among tire users is based upon our ability to give efficient service. Our service goes to the customer until he has ob tained the maximum mileage out of his tire and then we will endeavor to give him more miles by vulcanizing re-inforcing or retread ing his tire. It is easy to make the above statements but we are ready with the proof. Two days later, after a series of investigations, Mr. Lazenby entered into a tentative contract with Mr. Kimmick to the ef fect that if the latter could furnish ab solute proof that the Savage tire was the tire of finest quality and "workman-1 ship, and would meet I1 requirements demanded by the Boss Rubber com pany, not in California, but in Arizona, New Mexico and West Texas, he would give the Savage people some consider ation. That same evening, the Boss Rubber company sent out 71 telegrams- to 71 different Savage dealers in Arizona and New Mexico, the names of these dealers being furnished by Mr. Kim mick. The substance of these tele grams was as follows: "Please wire at our expense, confi-.i dential, regarding quality and service rendered by Savage tires in your vicin ity.'- Replies from 70 of these dealers were received and, without a single excep tion, every one highly commended the Savage tire. On this showing. Mr. Lazenby agreed to further test the Savage tires and? in consequence, placed a carload order for this make. A carload of another make tire3 were also ordered at the same time, the two being given a thorough trial. As a result of this order, the Savage Tire company gave the Boss people the exclusive selling rights of Savage tires ip New Mexico and EI Paso. The first carload of tires proved the excellence of the product to such an extent, that the Boss Rubber company thereupon agreed to take over the whole territory that was under the ju risdiction of the Phoenix branch of the Savage Tire company, and purchased outright all accounts receivable at the Phoenix office. The Savage Tire company of San Diego, after going into the integrity, finances and capacity, not only of the Boss 'Rubber company, but officers of the firm as well, agreed to turn over the Phoenix branch and territory, whjeh included Arizona. Kew Mexico, West Texas and three stales in Old Mexico, and the Boss Rubber company was given exclusive jobbing riRht of Savage products in this territory. Five solid carloads of tires were thereupon purchased by the Boss Rub ber company as the initial offer, this orde.- having been placed July 1. It is believed to be the largest exclusive tire order ever placed in the southwest, with no exception. The Boss Rubber company also handles Firestone solid truck tires in Arizona. They have handled these tires for a period of many months in El Paso and the tires gave such valuable ser vice that the Boss people endeavored to .secure exclusive selling rights of Firestone truck tires in Maricopa county. This right was granted a short time ago. A 200-ton solid tire press has re cently been installed at the local head quarters of the Boss Rubber company to give the necessary service to pur chasers. A large order for a complete stock of solid and pneumatic truck tires has recently been placed. The company probably carries the most complete line of tires, passenger and truck as well, in Arizona. Thou sands of tires are on the display shelves at the headquarter. In addition to the Savage and Fire stone truck tires, the company handles a. its leading tube, the Dural tube. guaranteed to be the heaviest red and ammonia tube built. W. J. Scheidle'r. an experienced rub ber man, will be in charge of the truck tire department. He specializes in solid truck tires, in which business he has had extensive experience. As an indication of the extenisve scale on which the Boss Rubber com pany's local office conducts its busi ness, it was announced yesterday that four Dodge roadters have been pur chased. The cars will be used by sales men, covering the Arizona territory which is now under the jurisdiction of the Phoenix branch of the Boss Rub ber company. The main office of the company is at El Paso, warehouses being maintained at Phoenix. El Paso. Albuquerque and Amarillo. The Boss Rubber companjd also bandies a line of standard acces sories only. You have never seen so new a car as this new Mitchell Six. It is more than a new model, with new design, new features and new looks. And the best Light Sixes built in pre-war days could not meet those re quirements. The Mitchell people, two years ago, de cided to fix new standards. They em ployed many able specialists to help. Then wartime, when the great Mitchell factory worked on trucks, gave to these experts their great opportunity. As a result, this completely new car with all its new standards, has been de veloped in two years. A Vast Undertaking Records were examined on tens of thousands of Sixes to ascertain every re quirement. Then, one by one, every part of the car was brought up to new strength requirements. It meant new axles, new gears, new brakes, a new frame. , It meant new ma chinery for finer workmanship and more accurate tests. Over $250,000 was spent on the new equipment. It meant the training of 135 inspectors to analyze steels, to watch every detail, to conduct the countless tests. It meant more than 100 important changes in mo- ' tor, chassis and body. The same cars carried men and women back home at night Business houses sent cars through out the city for the convenience of shoppers. These were sent by request, but operated without charge. The Gates Rubber company carried 1200 employes to and from work whilt the strike was on without a tardy mark or one absentee. Other large local in dustries and department stores made equally successful records. Then the city council rushed through an ordinance permitting the licensing of Jitneys. Streets swarmed with cars. Applications for permits poured in so fast city hall license clerks could not keep pace with the demand for routes. Fifty jitney lines with an average ol ten cars to the line were mapped out the first day. A thousand cars were licensed during the next 24 hours. Dealers, especially those who made a specialty of used cars, did a rush ing business. Prices for second hand cars went skyrocketing. Junk yards were besieged. Every motor that could be made to move was snapped up at the dealer's own price. Denver turned from hiking to honk ing. Just as the city was settling down and making up its mind to "jitney" to and from work all summer, tram of- 1 ficials, employes and city heads got to gether and settled the strike. Denver returned to the six-cent fare pending ; a vote on the issue to be taken within 90 days. DENVER, Colo., July 27. Hail to the ! jitney! Colorado is emerging from a motoring spree. Denver has completed one big joy ride tht promised for a time to last all summer. While the "spree" was on. car deal ers disposed of their last "better than motors." "Legitimate' dealers oversold three months ahead. Prospective own ers dealt that far in futures. Motors that went to the scrap piles back in the Paleozoic days of rightsidc drives and outside clutch were resur rected, revived, rebored, repainted, re licensed and resold. Every car in Denver, from the tin buss to the two-ton truck was on the job day and night. For Denver for four days was with out trolley transportation and the city had its choice between hiking and honking. Almost unanimously it chose to honk. Denverites took to jitneys like bees to clover. They literally swarmed over the first cars to operate. And in tht rush hours of the morning and the afternoon, workers scrambled and fought for the first opportunity thou sands ever had to ride in an auto mobile for a five cent fare. Trainmen, 1600 strohg, in the emplo of the Denver Transportation company rolled their cars into barns, turned ir. their badges and walked out on strike at i o'clock on the morning of July 8. For the first four days of the strike the only cars to operate were thosfc. Carrying mail and milk. The rest of the tram system was tied up tighter than the proverbial drum. First and Adams Sts AUTO T TLES W LL MINIMIZE THEFTS A real solution of the motor car theft problem and a reduction on theft in surance rates of at least 50 per cent, is the promise of the Automobile Ab stract & Tile company, a million dol lar Detroit and Chicago corporation which proposes to issue abstracts of title for automobiles. No more feasible plan has been ad vanced for the complete and absolute elimination of the automobile thief. It will be quite as impossible to steal and sell a motor car so protected as it would be in the case of real estate. In fact the automobile abstracts finds an exact parallel in the abstract issued for real estate to prove ownership and guarantee title. From the motorist's point of view, the Immediate and most important re sults will be a material reduction in theft rates which in many parts of the country are now prohibitive. In addition the abstract will serve a number of other worthy purposes such as providing information of mortgages, liens and similar legal claims which may exist against a car. The automobile abstract is the big best thought in motor car protection since the advent of the automobile it-- j self. There is but one remedy for a motor that is smoky and has slapping pistons and that is to have your cylinders ground out and refitted with oversize pistons and rings. This is not an experiment but a most thorough'y demonstrated fact. It is identically the same process which is used in producing the best motors known to the mechanical world. There is no better process, all reports to the contrary are not to be considered. The best airplane, truck, tractor, pleasure or racing motor is a ground motor. We have been on the job for the last two years, and we notice that the Pacffic coast and the eastern motor makers are in the business and have been for the last eight years. And all are making good. This grinding process is the ONLY process, as it makes for a saving in gas and oil, and produces a powerful and sweet running motor. We admit that it is a real man's job to set up a ground motor, but we have men here in Phoenix who have more than the ordinary skill and they make a success in setting a ground motor going and going right.
