PAGE TEN SECTION TWO E ARIZONA REPUBLICAN, SUNDAY MORNING, AUGUST 10, 1919 II HOT WEATHER LAUNDRY NO TASK TO APPALL BY RUTH BAIRD Home Economics Expert, - U. S. Dept. of Agriculture. . "If It were not for the washing and ironing in the summer time I might en joy my self," many housewives admit. It is true that washing and ironing in the summer often require much more of the busy housewife's time than her other duties and her strength will per mit. These tasks are hard work for almost everyone and so far no magic way has been devised whereby they are made to be no work at all. How ever, they can be dona with a minimum amount of time and energy if good equipment is used and sane rules of work observed. A well-made washing machine, run by electricity or other power if possible, but if not. by hand tubs at a convenient height, a smooth, well-made washboard and a wringer are neces sary for doing a family washing effi ciently. Rinse until no dirt or soap comes out into the water. Use warm water at first eo soap will not harden. Wring, blue and starch if desired. Dry In sun, for it whitens them. For the colored materials, silks, and woolens, use lukewarm water, both for washing and rinsing and a soar, solution. Dry wrong-side out in th-j shade. Since the ironing is such a big task at best, lessen it as much as possible by rough drying the sheets and towels, by choosing outergarments of , seer sucker or materials that req lire liUle ironing, and crepe or knit undergar ments that require no Ironing. Lun cheon cloths and napkins and occasion al paper luncheon sets instead of the neavy linen table cloths and linen nap kins lessen it, also. Lessen Labor of Ironina An electric or a gas iron does not make the task nearly so hot as do those heated on the range, and they are time- savers. 'or ironing have the clothes evenly dampened, use clean hot irons ror the white and medium hot for col ored and silk garments, and Iron until tnorougniy dry. Send to the V. S. Department of Ag riculture Dana ror Thrift Leaflet No. 5, for it is full of suggestions for laun dry work. WALSH TRIES TO BE INDIGNANT AS HIS REPORTS ARE DENIED Republican A. P. Leased Wire NEW YORK, Aug. 8. Demanding of James Ian MacPherson, chief secretary of Ireland, that he immediately join in a request to the peace conference for appointment of a committee to inves tigate alleged British atrocities in Ire land, Frank P. Walsh, chairman of the American commission on Irish inde pendence today cabled the secretary threatening to attack his personal veracity in denying cruelty charges preferred by the American commission. Secretary MacPherson characterized statements in the commission's report regarding the treatment of Sinn Fein prisoners in Belfast prison as "abso lutely without foundation." LESSONS IN THE ART OF KISSING -"THE STOLEN KISS" BY JUNE ELVIDGE World Film Star Is Kissing Going out of Style? Some persons say it is. A'.ut the com bined opposition of doctors, policemen and film censors will never succeed in discouraging the age-old custom of kissing. So long as there are life and youth and love in the world, men will seek the lips of their beloved ones and wo men will yield their lips to men, for there exists some deeply implanted psychological reason for the custom of kissing, and it is a part of human na ture. And all the doctors, all the laws, and all the censors are powerless in the face of human nature! Kisses are as the flowers of the field for variety and kind, and they can be utilized as a vehicle for conveying al most any kind of emotion, from treach ery to extreme passion. The best kiss a girl ever gets,- in my opinion, is the "stolen kiss." I have called it that, but no girl is ever really surprised into a kiss. She may not quite know when it is coming, and the actual performance may be a surprise, but here is a secret, young man when you think you are surprising her, it is only the culmination of her own well-laid plans! Do you think for a moment that she hasn't MADE YOU WANT TO KISS HLR? And if you want to badly enough, then you will scrape up the necessary courage. The stolen kiss' is innocent of any great emotion, yet it is one of the. sweetest any girl can get for it is the proof that her dream is coming true. The "stolen kiss' is usually a prelude to the engagement ring.
