The counties included under Mr. Bradner"s supervision are Maricopa, Yuma, Mohave. Yavapai, Coconino, Apache and Navajo. Three hundred assistants to be chosen by the super visors on the basis of their ability to answer satisfactorily certain questions designed to establish their general ed ucation and ability, will cover this work which murtt be completed by January 31. The enumeration of city districts, including phoenix, beginning January 1, must be completed within two weeks from that date. In the cities census takers .will be paid at the rate of from two to four cents a name, the exact amount as yet undetermined, but those in the outlying districts will be paid 6 a day and expenses. . The work of taking the decennial census throughout the United States is a tremendous one, and will require the employment of a vast army of special employes. In preparation for this, the civil service commission has announced the holding of two examin ations to secure bureau clerks for work in Washington. These dates have not yet been set, but it is known that both girls and men will be eligi ble and that the rate of pay will range from $9ft() to J 1.400 a year. The SCO assistants to Supervisor Bradner need not have passed the civil service examination, to secure appoint ment, it is stated.. 1 I4CJUMIIV I I U Is It 13 I Lr- f. . UiiJHilil L OS ANGELES fflUK IT1CYCLE IS PRACTICALLY S With more than $800 of a necessary (1,500 purse already subscribed to as sure a Los Angeles to Phoenix motor cycle race this fall, local motor "bike" enthusiasts will soon inaugurate a cam paign to raise Phoenix' share of the purse. The proposed route of the race is from Los Angeles to San Bernardino to Needles to Oatman to Kingman to Ash Fork to Prescott and thence to Phoenix. The race would end at the state fair grounds on the opening day of the fair, according to present ar rangements. According to word received by Harry Crandall, one of the promoters of the proposed event, from the Los Angeles Motorcycle club yesterday, that club will subscribe f 500 to-the purse. The San Bernardino club has offered an other $100 and the Needles chamber of commerce has added another $200. The total already subscribed is $850, leaving only $650 yet to be subscribed to make the event a surety. When the matter was first placed be fore the state fair commission, it was learned that race appropriation had al ready been made. It will therefore be necessary for the local enthusiasts to raise the $300 necessary to guarantee the event among motorcycle fans, friends and, possibly business institu tions. Under proposed plans, it is guaran teed that at least 33 riders will start in the race, among whom will bo the best riders in the country, - It may seem a little early to think about over coats, when most of the time you can go around in your shirt sleeves, but the mornings are be ginning to suggest things in the way of warmer or more clothes and one of these days you'll want an overcoat and you'll want it badly, so Here 's the Reason You Should Buy Your Overcoat Now We have repeatedly told you about the fabric market, and how hard it is to get merchandise. Drawings for reserved seats for the games in Cincinnati, which began last Monday, will continue at the Cincinnati club offices until midnight tonight. Pavilion and bleacher seats will be placed on sale Monday morning. , SOME PLAYS "ACTOR PROOF," (Brander Matthews in Scribner's) There are stage parts that "play themselves" and there are pieces that are "actor proof" effective even if performed only by an ordinary com pany without any actors of accredited ability. Hamlet is a part that "plays itself," since the plofof'the piece is so moving that it supports the performer of the central figure even' if he ;is not really equal to the characted. It was George Henry Lewes, I think, who as serted that no one of the leading Eng lish tragedians had ever completely failed as Hamlet, whereas the greatest of them all, David Garrick, had made so complete a fiasco as Othello that he never dared to appear in the piece a second time. ; The "Tartuffe" of Moliere is an actor proof play, holding the interest of the audience even when an uninspired company is giving a ragged perform ance. Almost as actor proof arc "As You Like It" and the "School for Scandal." All three of these comedies reward the most competent and the most careful performance; but they do not demand this. Their appeal is so broad and so certain that they can be carried off by good will,' aided in the Case of the two English comedies by high spirits. Then, too, their reputa tion is solidly established and wide spread; and the spectator comes to them assured that he will have enter tainment, predisposed to easy enjoy ment. i Quite possibly no one of the' three comedies was actor proof at its first performance; and perhaps they might then have been killed by an inadequate interpretation of any one of their more important characters.
