PAGE SIXTEEN THE ARIZONA REPUBLICAN, SUNDAY MORNING, MARCH 14, 1920 ffllRTY PROTESTANT IEST0 CHURCH IN FINANCIAL DRIVE Thirty Protestant denominations will hold . a united simultaneous campaign throughout the United States from April 25 to May 2 for funds to carry on the world-wide" task of the church. The financial objective will be $336, TI7.572. Of this amount, $175,448,349 s to be paid in 1920. This announce ment is made by Lyman I Pierce, di rector general of the campaign. This is the largest financial goal ever proposed for 'olunteer giving, being more than twice that of the t'nited War Work campaign. It is the first objective in which the element of ronjecture is absent, for it is based on s scientific survey of the needs of the world. The denominations taking part are: Advent Christian Church, Northern liaptists, Xational Baptists, General liaptists. Church of the Brethren, brethren Church, Christian Church, ('ongregational Churches, Disciples of Christ, Evangelical Association, Unit ed Evangelical Church. Society of Friends in America. Society of Friends in California. Holiness Church, Lu theran Evangelical Synod of North America, Oeneral Conference of Men tion ites, Methodist Episcopal Church, Methodist Protestant Church, Free Methodist Church of North America, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Colored Methodist Episcopal Church. Reformed Zion Union Apos tolic Church. Presbyterian Church in the United States of Am fyterian Church in the United States, South, Associate Reformed Presbyter tan Synod, Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America. United 1're.sbyterian Church. Reformed Clmrch in America, Reformed Church m the United States, Church of United tirethrcn In Christ. In making this announcement and n explaining the campaign, the basis f the appeal, and the Interchurch World Movement, Mr. Pierce said in part : "The survey of the denominations w hich are cooperating under the name f the Interchurch World Movement :s the most statesmanlike project ?ver undertaken. The church is the one great agency which knows, as a -esult of scientific and systematic tudy, what its unfinished task is, and it now proposes to meet this task by raising the necessary funds and de veloping the needed resources of man rower. No such demonstration of con- i -tion and faith has ever been shown ofore. "The task of the church is the task of all mankind, and so through the jrited simultaneous financial cam paign 1S2 boards of various kinds rep resenting these 3t denominations. Tiake their appeal to the whole nation. There will be no shirking of their -ponsibility on the part of these Miurches. They are organized most thoroughly to secure from their con stituencies the immense funds which rhurch people themselves stand ready :o give. These 31 denominational campaigns will be conducted simulta neously from April 25 to May 2, each fo!owing its own denominational chan nels and having full fredom of action. :n addition the campaign will be a jnited compaign as well. "It is proposed in every community throughout America to call on that great friendly constituency which is not directly allied with the church as members, to take its share in the rais of funds. To this end. In every i-ommunity, there wil be a united sim ultaneous financial campaign com mittee. This committee will organize a great citizens division to stand side by side with the denominational divis ions in providing'tbe financial object ive of each community. " "The raisins of the $336,. 7.000 whl be equitably and justly distributed among the states. Each state will make quotas on the same fair basis to oach county. The county will make quotas to the communities and tne communities will raise the funds nization made tip or a nmhpr nt divisions. Each local church win maintain its identity and be a unit in its denominational di vision. There will be also the citizens division which will seek to secure its just share from the communty at 'it must Te remembered that the great world-wide survey is the basis of the financial campaign, that tne ae nominations can not carry out the task in the foreign fields. The second is raised. This survey is probably the most remarkable ever made. It has been conducted under six general heads. "The first is the foreign field sur vey, which discloses the unfinished task in the foreign gields. The second is the home survey. There is now in progress throughout America an ex haustive study of the problems of the city. In approximately 70 per cent, of the counties throughout America the rural survey is under way. It is shown as a result of these studies that while there are not too many churches, as has often been stated, there may possibly be a better distribution of these churches and of the ministers. "Third is the Christian education survey. One of the great appealing enterurises of the country is the Chris tian college. These have been the pioneers of higher education. They must be maintained on a continuous scale of increased support. 'Fourth is the religious education survey. The problems of religious ed ucation based on the survey will be one which will seek to provide proper Christian standards for the next gen eration. "The fifth is the survey of hospitals and homes. The church hospitals and the church homes for the aged and de fenseless children have always been beacon lights in American commun ities. "The sixth is a ministerial retire ment and sustentation survey. The case has been made in this sixth divi sion for the proper care of the pas tors, who form a great constructive force throughout the world, who are giving tneir lives for the great un selfish objectives of the Christian re ligion. "This in brief is a summary of the various divisions of the survey. The church is now for the first time facing the facts, and in facing them has learned the magnitude of its unfin ished task. Facing courageously and steadfastly what is to be done. It Js calling not only on its members but also on all its adherents and friends to help it win the world for Christ."
