The desert road across the reservation is good, except for a few short stretch es where chuck holes have made It rough. Cochise County. All main roads in good condition and being improved by recent rains. Coconino County. All roads dry. Flagstaff-Williams good; Williams-Ash Fork, fair, rough in places: Williams-Grand" Canyon. First Avenue good; Flagstaff-Grand Canyon, good; Flagstaff-Canyon Padre, excellent, good traveling thence to Winslow, but rough in places; Flagstaff south, dry but rough. Graham County. County roads in fair condition in eastern part of county. Traffic must be cautious on roads from Glenbar to Geronimo on account of washouts; roads are passable but very rough in places. Gila County. General condition: Roads are dry and dusty. Globe-Winkelman-Hayden road in good condition. Roosevelt Payson road getting cut up; new con struction soft and dusty. Salt River bridge to be completed by August 1 when Roosevelt ferry will be discon tinued. Maricopa County. Frescott-Wickenburg road good. Black Canyon fair by way of Avenue 16. Holbrook to Winslow road rough 6 miles east of Winslow from rain the 23rd. Old trails good through county except 2 miles in petrified forest on account of new work. Gallup road fair. Pinal County. Mountain roads in good condition, valley roads dusty and rough. Florence Casa Grande road bad due to recon struction; take desert roads between these two points. Santa Cruz County. Heavy showers throughout the coun ty; all roads passable. Yavapai County. Light rains have settled dust. Roads in good condition. No washouts or high water. Yuma County. Ehrenberg ferry closed on account of high water. Parker: road via Parker and Nee dles in good condition. Ferry service not affected by high water. Repairs made on sand near Parker. Road is well signed. o- - I - OBITUARIES Edward Allen Hull Edward Allen Hull, a native of England, died at St. Joseph's hospital July 28. The decedent waa 38 years of age and had come to Phoenix two years ago for his health. Funeral services were held at the Yarwood and Hockery chapel yesterday aftern'oon. Burial was at Greenwood cemetery. Eugene W. Miller. Funeral services for Eugene W. Mil ler, who died last Tuesday, will be held at 4 o'clock this afternoon at ithe Moore and McLellan chapel. Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery. o TO HOLD HEARING A hearing on the application of F. C. Harris to oper ate a stag line between Phoenix and the city reservoir camps near Fort McDowell will be held before the state corporation commission Tuesday, Aug ust 3. ASKED TO CALL Mr. and Mrs. R. A CORRECTION An error was made in yesterday morning's Republi can in the story concerning the suit of Elvira Abril against her husband. En rique Abril. Mrs. Abril is bringing suit for separate maintenance instead of a divorce, as stated. FINED FOR SPEEDING W. X. McMarmon yesterday pleaded guilty before Justice Wheeler on a charge of exceeding the speed limit on the Tempe highway and was fined $10. NEW MEMBER OF STAFF Miss Pauline Shaw has been added to the staff of the state land department. Miss Shaw has entered the employ of the department as stenographer. GOING TO CAMP CREEK Mr. and Mrs. Oliver King and Mr. and Mrs. E E. Brooks will leave today for Camp Creek, returning to town on Monday. HELD TO COURT Dick Creger yes terday was held to answer to the fed eral court by United States Commis sioner Henke after a hearing before him on a- charge of having violated the narcotic drug act. Cre-sr was returned to the county jail when he failed to furnish a bond of $1,000. It was al leged that Creger dealt in and sold cer tain forms of cocaine. Two witnesses in th.- case were released under bonds of $250 each. BATHING A LA ADAM Shortly af ter noon yesterday an excited man called the sheriffs office on the phone and stated that a nut was posing as September morn in the neighborhood of Seventh avenue and the Glendale car line. Two deputies were sent to the scene. They found a Mexican a la Adam bathing in the canal near the Indian school. The man was dressed a.nd brought into the sheriffs office and after a lecture by Sheriff Montgomery on the requirements necessary for bath ing in thf canal he was released. PLEADS NOT GUILTY Javier San chez Soto yesterday pleaded not guilty before Justice McKee on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon and was released on his own recognizance to appear for trial next Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. The compla-int was made by Robert Isley, -a taxi driver, who alleges that Soto threatened him with a revolver. The alleged affair took place after Isley had driven Koto to Eleventh and Washington streets on the night of July 28. Isley declares he managed to escape, then called the po lice and Soto was arrested. SUES FOR $15,000 Declaring that he suffered injuries to the extent of $15,500 aftei being run down by an automobile belonging to and driven by the defendant, James Champion yes terday brought suit against Sidney J. Ross asking for a judgment. Cham pion says the accident took place on Saturday morning, July 10. near the intersection of Twentieth street and McDowell road. He a-lleges that his leg was broken and his body severely bruised by the impact, and asys he was forced to remain in the hospital for 13 days. He charges Ross with driving at a speed of 40 miles an hour at the time of the accident. ASKS $696 DAMAGES Declaring tha-t her aetomobile was damaged to the extent of $696.60 and that she also suffered damages to the extent of $550 through being deprived of the use of the car for 55 days, Dora Dietz, with her husband, John Dietz. yesterday brought suit against the Maricopa Creamery company asking for a. judg ment. Mrs. Dietz alleges that on the night of June 5 about 9 o'clock while her husband was driving herself and a party of friends west on Adams street in the car a truck belonging to th de fendant and driven by Victor Cash, an employe, collided with her car at the Intersection of Third nvfnue nnd Adams street. She nays her car was wrecked. Mrs. Dietz charges Cash with driving south on Third avenue at a speed of 30 mllfs an hour n.nd claims that he had r.o lights on the truck. I which she says was loaded with seven iocalBriefi PLEADS IT GUILTY TO FORGERY CHARGE - A. C. Cook yesterday pleaded not guilty before Justice McKee on a charge of forgery and was returned to the county jail when he failed to fur nish a bond of $1,500. He will be ex amined on the charge on Saturday, August 7. The complaint was made by T. A. Ring, who a.lleged that Cook gave the Berryhill company a check for $50 on April 30 to which it is said he had signed the name of B. H. Stillman. The check was one of the state prison im prest fund checks of Superintendent C. G. Powell, and was made out to Cook. According to the story told by the officers. Cook was sentenced to serve from one to two years in the state peni tentiary on a charge of forgery from Ya.vapai county in June, 1919. Last April, they said, Cook escaped from the road camp at Superior, and it is alleged that he took some of the super intendent's checks with him. Cook, the officers said, passed one of these checks in Superior and three in Phoenix, one of them being the check given the Berryhill company. Cook was captured in Texas and brought back to the sta.te penitentiary about a month ago and served out the remainder of his term. The warrant for the forgery charge in Phoenix was mailed to Superintendent Powell of the prison and Cook was turned over to the Maricopa county officials on Thursday aoid brought back to Phoenix by Dep uty Sheriff Al De Witt. BARBDA TAKEN TO E L Jesu3 Maria Barboa, the Mexican who is said to have confessed that he murdered Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Erhardt, was taken to the state hospital for the insane yesterday afternoon by Deputy Sheriffs Al De Witt and Gilbert Blanco. Barboa was placed in a ward and will receive the same treatment as other insane patients at the hospital. He will be closely observed during his stay to ascertain if possible the exact condition of his insanity. Barboa was brought to Phoenix from the state penitentiary at Florence on Thursday by Deputy De Witt after Superintendent Powell had requested Sheriff Montgomery to place the Mexican in the insane asylum. Thurs day night Barboa spent in the county jail. He talks only when spoken U and then replies with random answers. L. M. Laney, county attorney, stat ed last night that he would be unable to leave for San Francisco on Sunday night because of a meeting of the board of supervisors on next Monday. Mr. Laney said that soon after that date, in company with Sheriff Mont gomery, he would leave for an inter view with Mose Gibson, the negro Who confessed that he killed the Erhardts. BACK FROM VACATION Alfred Franklin, collector of internal revenue, will return this morning from his vaca tion, spent on the Californian coast. Announces Candidacy Fred C. Rol en yesterday announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for jus tice of the peace for East Phoenix precinct. Mr. Bolen has been a. resi dent of that precinct for almost nine years. He has been connected with law offices for several years and is a member of the bar. having been admit ted to practice in the supreme court ot this state last fall. GOES ON EASTERN TRIP Mrs. Gertrude Bird will leave this evening for an extensive tour of the east. She will spend Sunday at the Grand Can yon, going from there to her former home in Pittsburg, where she will be the guest of her brother, Ralph H Bast. Her itinerary includes other points of interest in Pennsylvania, with a few weeks in New York and a. short time in Washington and Niagara Falls On hen return to Arizona she will visit in Denver. Phone 4441 DIES 111 FRONT OF 'S OFFICE An unknown Mexican died yester day afternoon in Glendale in front of the coroner's office and the body was taken into the place, a jury impaneled and an inqust held. The verdict was death from causes unknown. The in quest was conducted by Coroner F. J. Patterson. According to the story told by Mr. Malen, a rancher living near Glendale. the Mexican had been working for him and yesterday noon became suddenly ill. Malen said he placed the man in his car and drove to Glendale for med ical aid. Just as he reached the office of Justice Patterson, the Mexican died, Malen said. He did not know the Mexican' name, the rancher stated.
