Lit fete Stories Of -The - Town But He Saw the Range Anyway That a man known throughout the country as a business man of ability should be engaged in a business for a quarter of a century and give it no other personal attention than to re ceive the profits from it is almost" in conceivable. But yet that has been successfully done by Hon. T. A.; Roir dan and his brother, M. J. Riordan, of Flagstaff, proprietors of the Arizona Lumber company. But the. business spoken of here is not that of the lum bS company, for they give that un remitting attention. " " -" But twenty-six years ago they, were induced to go into the sheep business: nearly everybody in that part of An zona had something to do with sheep at that time. Their partner in that enterprise was Charlie Howard, who is yet a partner and general manager. Probably millions of sheep have come and gone on the range of the company, but the Riordan brothers have never seen one of them. Though the range is within two hours' ride of Flagstaff neither of the brothers has ever seen it; that is neither of them had ever seen it until very recently, when one of them was kidnapped by Howard and taken out to it. Howard had been trying for years to get them to visit their property. "What's the use?" was the reply. "We don't know anything about sheep; we're lumbermen. We're satisfied with the way c you have been running the business. We've made money out of it; a great deal of money." But a few days ago Howard came to Flagstaff, planted his feet in the offices of the brothers and announced, that he would not return to the range unless one or both of the brothers went back with him. In order to get 'rid 'of "him T. A. went with him, but on his return to town he said that he knew as much then about the sheep business as he did when he embarked upon it a quar ter of a century ago. But He Got All He Wanted If variety makes life worth living. then the clerk of a marriage license bureau should never complain, for he certainly has variety in all Its forms. No two men who come in to get the little certificate that means so much at the time and so little later on act exactly alike during the filling out of the blanks. For 1o the average man the taking out of a marriage license is one of the few important events of life. Some men are so nervous' they would run if the clerk so much -as ''booed" at them. Others are so assured ' the ! clerk must indeed feel like a, humbler being. Still others come In who can not remember small details, such as the age of the bride to be, and there is one case on record in this county of a man who wanted a marriage license and couldn't remember the name of the girl not even her first name. Others, approach the counter' and By Condo MOT T3V UO K'v I s iv TWi.' 13uSNe3S YOU OUT SHOP SO N1 OVCRALCS Or THe FK.CAK itr j r-! leave without the license, because they have not been- divorced a sufficient length of time or because one- of the "contracting parties" is under age and has not obtained the consent of the parents. Old and young, they come in a steady stream. ' But the one that came the other day had all others faded. , , A! man .wearing a very beautiful and somewhat colorful shirt strode into the office of the clerk ot the court and. coming up to the counter, asked if that was ..the,... place, to procure marriage licenses. The clerk replied that it was. The man's next question was literally a stunning one. - "I want to get five licenses," the man Announced In an off hand, matter-of-fact way. The clerk was too astonished to move for a moment, and the man, noting the delay, requested five; blanks at once. By this time " the clerk had recovered his composure, and after a surreptitious glance to see if the man showed any symptoms Of being . overcome by the heat;, iniormed him that it was cus toary to issue only one license at a time, and not to deal them out by de partment store methods. This explanation failed entirely to satisfy the customer; however; and he demanded to know why he could not buy a dozen if ht wanted them. The clerk replied that he ceuld buy them, perhaps," but that the laws of Arizona stipulated expressly that a man could marry only one woman. Harems, he added, had gone out of style, even in the west. ' At this the man suddenly saw the light.. He explained that he did not want the licenses for himself, but for fiV'e lndia,n couples on the Fort Mc Dowell agency. He added that his con sent was necessary to the marriage of an Indian on the reservation, as he happened to be L. C. Bennett, the. In dian agent, and that he had dropped In to get the licenses himself while he was in town, instead of sending the Indians in. Wher Mr. Bennett left the office he had the five little rolls under- his arm. As for the clerk well, when a man wants more than one marriage license the clerk now inquires if the customer is an' Indian agent before he refuses the request. He Knew There Wasn't Any Such Animal Jim Simpson, tormer newspaper man, now proprietor or a Phoenix gar age, told this one: . , Some years - ago. in the good old days when a man's pocketbook and capacity were tne only limits on the a. ount of liquor he could drink, a fish market opened upon on a, downtown street. The night before the opening day the market received a large box of fis.i. from the. coast, 'and the bottom of the box was completely filled with one huge denizen of the deep. The proprietor of the market happened to be a live-wire business man, and he immediately seized upon the great fish as the logical thing to use for a dis play sign over the door of the new market, knowing it would attract much attention. - Next morning the design was car ried out. and all through the opening day the monster lung over the door of the market. its five feet of length stretched above the portal, fulfilling its appointed mission of drawing the no tice of the populace to the new estab lishment. All gazed on the fish, and all pondered upon its size. Along toward evening, when the street, was nf arly deserted, a gentle man approached with that heavy air of gravity which sometimes settles upon a person after the thirteenth or fourteenth highball. This gentleman drew near the new fish market with a stiffly steady gait, and directly in front of the door paused to observe ths big fish. After a long stare the man hacked off carefully and returned from att- i other ang:e. to iook again, viiis ma ! neuver: was repeated several timrs j until, satisfied his eyes were not d i ceiving him, the mar. save tongue to his thoughts, in the following manner: "Umph, pretty big fish.
