So far in ourstudy of David in tne
nresent series of Sunday school les-
store, Hyatt s sons. we have had him as a beautiiui
shepherd boy, a brilliant young man
himself. He does not try to hide his
guut. He is not a yellow cur as sin
ners and criminals often are. This
frankness and sameness of David
make us like him in spije of his sins.
David wants to make a clean job of
the cleansing and reform.- He uses
the words 'Blot," "Wash," "Cleanse."
Strong words in the original Hebrew.
One chief trouble with our reforms ia
the half way measures and the reser
vation tactics. Some of us do not
want to be changed half as badly as
we think or profess. God is ready
to clean us up whenever we get ready
for it. David also uses the words
Create,- "Renew," Deliver."
The story.. of David's sin is prob
ably more shameful than that of any
other on the pages of history; not be
cause it has not often been paralleled.
but because it is so much of a contrast
to the past life of David. lie fell so
far. He had such a good chance to
stay on the high pinnacle. There was
so much at stake. There was so lit
tle to be gained. It is hard to under
stand except by the way of human
frailty in all men.
This story and this Psalm of peni
tence is the age old story of the eter
nal in Gods mercy. -
It is a fearful warning to all that
there is within each of us the posfei
bility of extreme wickedness and emi
nent danger of falling at any moment.
This is the penitential Psalm of the
church of all ages and has been used
as the basis' of hymns-, litanies, doc
trines, anthems and deep things in
evangelism.
That everybody needs salvation is
the outstanding fact of the ages. That
a saint like David could yield to temp
tation and a sinner like David could
be forgiven are fundamental truths.
David was always sure of God. Now
he is sure of sin. Therefore, his first
thought is to go to God about it.
"My sin is ever before me." Does
this remind us of Poe's "Raven. and

Shakespeare's words on "Conscience,"
and the chapter in Hugo's "Les Mis
erables?" Confession is ' fundamental in the
struggle to salvation and peace of
mind. No one has ever given us a
better reason than David did. This
sense of need of confession evolved
the 'Confessional' in the early history
of the church. For millions this s
of inestimable value. David went di
rectly to God with his confession.
David recognizes the fact that sin
is deep rooted in the race, but he does
not bring this up to offer as an excuse
of his sin. Many do this. The man
who does so is a yellow cur and a sniv
ling hypocrit. '
David also, notes that sin Is an in
ward affair. The surface is only the
symptom that which is within.
David knew that repentance could
not be real unless it meant a, renewed
life and a new start.
The truly restored man is always to
teach other sinners the . way. Jerry
MacAuley and Billy Sunday are good
illustrations.

SHOOTING IN VALLEY
E. L. Valleen of Los Angeles, who
represents Selby shells in southern
California and Arizona, has been in
Phoenix the past week, the guest of W.
j. pinney. and left for home last eve
ning. Mr. Valleen has been enjoying
the whitewing shooting every day
while here; he frr.s shot all kinds of
game birds, and says this shooting1 sur
passes anything fc has eve seen. He
is one of the best shots at the traps
and at game birds that ever has been
in Phoenix.
Thursday afternoon a party of five,
consisting: of W. Ia. Finney, J. M. Ait
ken. D. E. Morrell, E. L. Valleen and
A. C. Pinney, secured the limit for eacn
hunter in less than an hour, nearly
all the birds belnp young whitewlngs.
They report the birds as "bunching up."
